Canadian takes home 1st place at the World Cup of Poetry

This may be the best news we’ve heard all year!

Congratulations and thanks go to Ikenna “OpenSecret” Onyegbula, who finished first at the Coupe de Monde de Poésie in Paris, France.

Onyegbula became the Canadian representative by winning the 2013 Canadian Individual Poetry Slam at the Verses Festival of Words in Vancouver. The World Cup of Poetry takes place in Paris every year, and poets all across Canada are cheering on their champion!

About Ikenna Onyegbula: Ikenna ‘OpenSecret’ Onyegbula has represented Ottawa three times at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word, winning the National Slam Team Title back to back in 2009 and 2010. In 2011, he became the inaugural Canadian Individual Poetry Slam Champion; a feat he repeated in 2013. In 2012, he was selected to represent Canada at the World Poetry Slam Championships in Paris, France, where he placed 4th overall. Ikenna is a member of the nationally acclaimed four member spoken word troupe, The Recipe, opening for such acts as K-OS, The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and Arrested Development.
