How can I compete in CIPS 2021?

Both participation and registration to compete in CIPS 2021 are FREE.

There are 3 ways to participate as a competing poet in CIPS:

Your local spoken word series: Be chosen by your local/active spoken word series through their respective selection process. Submission needs to be done by the spoken word series. (i.e. Vancouver Poetry Slam holds its qualifiers, and submits the winner to CIPS). The deadline for slam representative submissions is March 6, 2021.

Submit your slam series representative by completing this form.

VPH Regional Qualifiers: We recognize that with the global pandemic, many spoken word series have shuttered across the country. For folks whose local poetry slam is no longer active, we will be hosting a Regional Qualifier. See details below. The deadline for regional qualifier registration is March 1, 2021.

Register for your regional qualifier by completing this form.  Registration will open in early February.

*** Our hope with the Regional Qualifiers is to reduce barriers and provide opportunities for poets to connect. That being said, we acknowledge that we remain in the midst of a global pandemic. COVID-19 realities have impacted all of our schedules and capacities. If there are insufficient registrants to effectively host a regional qualifier in a particular region, we will pivot and adjust to address the situation in a way that provides equitable opportunities of participation for all interested poets. In such a case, you will be contacted with details on how we will proceed.

Storm Poets: Every year, we offer the opportunity to poets to opt into the competition. Individual poets are invited to submit their name into a pool, and storm poet slots will be chosen by random draw. Submissions will be open on March 7, with a draw held later in the month. The deadline for storm poet registration is March 15, 2021.

How do I know if I am eligible to participate in CIPS 2021?

All competing poets are required to have an existing Canadian address.

Eligibility note for Spoken Word series:

In order for Spoken word series to be eligible to have a representative, they need to be able to demonstrate activity in either 2019 or 2020. This could be through past events, programming, etc. We want to honour existing spoken word series.
