Johnny MacRae is a mouthy poet. A former member of two Vancouver Poetry Slam teams (2009/2010), and one Victoria Poetry Slam team (2013), MacRae has been a three-time regional champion (Vancouver grand slam, 2010; Vancouver indy slam, 2013/2016) and a national underground champion (CFSW 2011). In 2013, he was named Poet of Honour for the Victoria Spoken Word Festival. Since 2010, MacRae has offered hundreds of performances at slams and readings, as well as poetry, music, and theatre festivals across Canada and the United States, both solo and as a member of psychedelic talk rock duo, 2 Dope Boys in a Cadillac. He attended Spoken Word residencies at the Banff Centre twice, and was a three-time ensemble member at the Victoria Spoken Word Festival, including the 2015 All Star Ensemble.
Since 2010, MacRae has given over 250 workshops or performances in schools around British Columbia and Canada. Having led a number of residencies in schools, he has been listed on the ArtStarts Artists in the Classroom directory. In addition to his work with local schools programs, MacRae has been a touring artist for the IslandLink Library Federation (2014-16); a guest artist in schools with Write Out Loud in Saskatoon, SK (2014/15) and the Edmonton Poetry Festival (2015); and an instructor at WordsWorth (2015-17, the Writers’ Guild of Alberta’s week-long youth creative writing residency.
In 2013, he took over as Vancouver Poetry House’s “Youth Outreach Coordinator,” in which role he directs WordPlay Poets and co-directs Hullabaloo, the BC Youth Spoken Word Festival. Also in 2013, MacRae founded Victoria Poetry Project’s youth outreach program, Raising Voices, which he directed until 2015. A tireless organizer, he also founded the UBC Poetry Slam, which he directed from 2009 to 2011, and was a co-director of the 2014 Canadian Festival of Spoken Word in Victoria.
