SUMMARY:CIPS Storm Poet Registration
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: REMAINING SPOTS ARE FULL. A WAITLIST HAS STARTED. \nRegister as a Storm Poet for the 2025 Canadian Individual Poetry Slam!! \nCIPS takes place from April 16 to April 19\, 2025. All competing poets must be available for CIPS Orientation on the morning of April 16th\, as well as evening competitions (beginning at 7 PM PST) on April 16\, 17 and 19.CIPS is a hybrid competition: poets may choose to compete in-person or online (via Zoom). All in-person events will take place at Chill X Studio (2270 Manitoba St). \n\nABOUT REGISTRATION\n\nSpaces are available on a first come\, first served basis. To secure a spot in CIPS\, fill out this registration form.\n\nOnce your form response has been received by the CIPS Tournament Director\, you will receive an email to confirm your registration status and\, if applicable\, how to complete payment. The cost to register is $75. Poets on the wait list will be invited to pay registration if or when a spot opens up.\n\n\nPoets registered in CIPS receive a Verses Festival Pass (which provides discounted registration to for the Beau Sia master class) and free registration in workshops that are exclusive to CIPS poets.\n\n\nCIPS FORMAT: \nCIPS will return to the original format in 2025:\n\n\nAll participants will perform a minimum of 4 poems during two\, 2-round preliminary bouts on April 16th and April 17th.\n\nPreliminary bouts will feature up to 12 poets\, with randomly selected judges giving scores between 0.0 and 10.0.\nBouts on April 16th will feature 2-minute and 3-minute poems.\nBouts on April 17th will feature of 4-minute and 1-minute poems.\n\n\nThe 10 highest-ranked poets after preliminaries will compete in CIPS Finals on April 19th.\n\nCIPS Finals will feature three rounds of 3-minute poems\, with “cut from below” elimination reducing the field between each round from 10 to 7 to 4.\nPoets must NOT repeat any material during the competition.\n\n\n\nFull details about the competition are available here.

Following a short break\, we SLAM! \nABOUT THE SLAM: \nThe slam will feature up to 10 poets in the first round. The top four poets make it to the second round AND qualify for the Van Slam Canadian Individual Poetry Slam Qualifier on April 7!! \nBoth rounds have a 3-minute time limit (with a 10-second grace period). Standard slam rules apply: original work only; no props; no costumes; no musical accompaniment; no animal acts; and no nudity. Utilizing an anti-oppressive lens\, Jillian has performed and facilitated workshops across North America and beyond. She is the author of The Gospel of Breaking (Arsenal Pulp Press 2020)\, and the children’s book\, The Magic Shell (Flamingo Rampant Press 2022). In Fall of 2023\, Christmas was appointed as the inaugural Poet-in-residence at the Vancouver Art Gallery\, where she can often be found daydreaming.  She is the current Curatorial Director at Kickstart Disability Arts and Culture. Working and living on the unceded territories of the Squamish\, Tsleil-Waututh and Musqueam people (Vancouver\, BC.)

Stephansson Award for Poetry\, and the Women of Vision Award. \nA strong advocate for social change & community building in 2003 she founded The Calgary Spoken Word Society and remains the Artistic Director today. For 11 years the society produced a very large Spoken Word Festival and sidekick School Program. Johnny D Trinh will share examples of community-engaged art from individual artists\, to organizations. Trinh will highlight introductory concepts and considerations with engaging in community focusing on concepts of ethics\, accountability\, and consent. This event will be hybrid with an option to join online. \nARTIST BIO: Johnny D. Trinh is an interdisciplinary artist\, award-winning playwright\, and spoken word poet based in Vancouver\, British Columbia. As the Artistic Director of Vancouver Poetry House and Interim Executive Director of the Historic Joy Kogawa House Society\, Trinh is a key figure in Vancouver’s literary community. His leadership focuses on elevating the voices of marginalized communities and creating spaces for spoken word artists to thrive. He integrates spoken word\, music\, video\, movement\, theatre\, and creative technology to create immersive experiences that reflect the complex\, multi-layered realities of our world. \nTrinh’s practice is deeply rooted in socially engaged\, community-based art\, with a pedagogy aimed at fostering empowerment\, agency\, and compassion. He believes that art has the power to unite and create solidarity\, and he continually works toward accountability\, integrity\, and fostering inclusivity in his practice. A member of the League of Canadian Poets\, Trinh holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Studies: Theatre & Creative Technology. His research focuses on auto-ethnographic performance and spoken word as a primary method in community-engaged art. \nWith several chapbooks and the audio album #undeniable released in 2017\, Trinh’s contributions extend beyond performance\, fostering the growth of emerging voices in the arts.
