SUMMARY:2020 Hullabaloo All Star Slam featuring Chris Tse\, Patrick de Belen and Ruthless. Hosted by Johnny D. Trinh
DESCRIPTION:This event will be taking place on the unceded\, ancestral territories of the Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil-Wautuh peoples.\nFor 2020 We have a brand new location and day for the annual All Star Slam.  This year we’ll be at the fully accessible\, Central Branch of the Vancouver Public Library in the Alice MacKay room.  The All Star Slam will bear witness to poetic thunder and lightning\, as three poets compete in an all-out battle of poetic verve and wit.  Hosted by Johnny D. Trinh\, this year’s event will Chris Tse\, Patrick de Belen and one other poet to be named soon.  All of them bringing the poignancy\, hilarity\, and immediacy of poetry slam to the stage\, this event is perfect for students who are in danger of finding poetry boring!\nChristopher Tse Bio\nChristopher Tse is an artist\, educator\, and settler currently living on Songhees\, Esquimalt\, and WSANEC territory in what is otherwise known as Victoria\, BC. He placed second at both the 2011 Poetry Slam World Cup and 2016 Rio International Poetry Slam\, and is a former Canadian national slam champion. Tse has shared the stage with Martin Luther King III\, Shane Koyczan\, and Demi Lovato\, and his work has appeared on CBC\, CTV\, and on radio stations from Ghana to Australia. A brown boy with 6th generation immigrant roots on Turtle Island\, Tse is currently finishing his master’s in Critical Social Work with a focus on how arts-based activism aligns with youth organizing and decolonization. He writes on identity\, intimacy\, immigration\, and basketball.\n \nPatrick de Belen Bio\nFrom arts educator\, to event host\, to youth mentor\, to award-winning poet/writer\, to most recently\, directing\, Patrick de Belen is a storyteller of many kinds. He strongly believes through these stories he can save the world and himself – and secure the bag – all at the same time.  Along with his own personal projects\, PDB has collaborated with many notable organizations – using storytelling to build and serve his community. Find some of these works on his website: PatrickdeBelen.com / follow him on instagram at @patrick_debelen   www.PatrickdeBelen.com\n \nIvy Adad aka Ruthless bio \n“Ruthless” is a Filipinx writer born in Manila Philippines. In 2014\, she moved to the stolen territories of Katzie\, Semiahmoo\, Kwantlen\, Kwikwetlem\, Qayqayt\, and Tsawwassen First Nations. \nRuthless is studying Journalism and Creative Writing at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. She writes about the effects of diaspora in her life. \nRuthless attributes her relationship to prose and poetry to an indecisive lover. She writes to make words love her back\, and revels in the rejection she constantly receives \n \nTickets are $6\nPlease get in touch with Hullabaloo Director RC Weslowski at hullabaloo@vancouverpoetryhouse.com to book your tickets\nHow does it work? Simple. The poets perform one poem each in three rounds\, all of which are judged on a scale of zero to ten by the audience — in this case\, the students! In the end\, the winner is announced\, though in effect\, everyone has won. Students have been moved\, inspired\, and engaged by poetry\, often for the first time in their lives.\nAs one student had it: “This is better than Metallica!” The topics are engaging\, the presentation is amazing\, and the competition is riveting. Guaranteed to jumpstart students into writing careers of their own.\nWhat: Hullabaloo All Star Slam\nWhen: Thursday April 16th–2 SHOWS!!    10 am-11:15 am and 12:30 pm – 1:45 pm\nWhere: Central Branch\, Vancouver Public Library\, Alice MacKay Room\nACCESSIBILITY:\nThe VPL Central Branch has elevators to reach the downstairs rooms where the Hullabaloo events are being held. SUMMARY:Honesty\, Rigor and Attention
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a writing intensive with Brandon Wint\, on Sunday\, August 18th\, 2-4pm | $5/pwyc at the door | 4th floor\, 111 West Hastings.\n  \nBrandon Wint is well known for blending an academically grounded approach to poetry\, which he inherited in his several years of study as an Honours English student at Carleton University\, with a spiritual-emotional approach. Brandon gives his students the ability to understand the fundamental structure of free verse poetry in a way that is coherent\, accessible\, and grounded in his own experience. These technical tenets are joined by a strong emphasis on authenticity\, sincerity and the exploration of personal narrative. As an arts-educator\, Brandon firmly believes that poetry is\, ultimately\, an act of telling the truth. He helps his students arrive at their personal truths and distill them into evocative\, satisfying poetic verse.\n  \nBrandon Wint’s intricately-rendered performance pieces present a passionate\, sincere and whimsical version of humanity. His writing\, performance\, and pedagogical approach all affirm\, in their different ways\, that there is beauty to be found in the struggle\, and solace to be found in sincerity-of-spirit. He is an artist who uses poetry to harness empathy within himself\, and have each of his words\, deeds\, creations and performances reflect that empathy unambiguously. He is a two-time national champion slam poet\, a nationally published writer\, as well as arts-educator and curator of artistic events.\nIf you have any questions about this event please contact hello@vancouverpoetryhouse.com\n  \nAccessibility\n  \nOn weekends and evenings\, the 111 West Hastings Building is locked. A Vancouver Poetry House staff member will be downstairs to let people into the building 15 minutes before the meeting or text 604 704 9314 to let you in. There are four\, single occupancy\, washrooms without gender markings on the fifth floor. Two of these washrooms are wheelchair accessible. There will be light snacks available at the meeting.  You are welcome to bring something to share.\n

SUMMARY:Hullabaloo Poetry Slam Round 2!
DESCRIPTION:Every team in Hullabaloo will perform in one bout this afternoon\, either the first or second slate of prelims. All teams and audience members are encouraged to attend the entire evening. The poems will be judged by five random members of the audience who are not directly affiliated with any of the poets or schools. They will give each poem a score between 0 and 10. We will drop the high and low scores\, and each poem will receive a total score out of 30. Each bout has four rounds (three rounds of solo poems and a mandatory group piece round) so the highest possible team score is 120.\nVPL Central Branch: Alice MacKay & Peter Kaye-Alma VanDusen Rooms\nFIRST BOUTS:\nDoors at 1:00 PM\nStart at 1:30 PM\nSECOND BOUTS:\nDoors at 3:00 PM\nStart at 3:30 PM\nFREE\nThe Vancouver Poetry House respectfully recognizes that our series events take place on the traditional and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-waututh)\, and sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) nations. We recognize that colonial violence led to the creation of Vancouver\, and how that allows our organization to exist. We aim to always be cognizant of who is represented on our stages\, and to do what we can to reach out to communities who are underrepresented thereupon.\nACCESSIBILITY:\nThe VPL Central Branch has elevators to reach the downstairs rooms where the Hullabaloo events are being held. There are wheelchair accessible bathrooms. For more details\, refer to their list of facilities (http://www.vpl.ca/location/central-library).\nThis event is a scent-reduced space. Each workshop is designed to be 45-50 minutes in length.\nWhat are we offering? Here’s a description!\nWRITING FOR JUSTICE with EL JONES\nWhat does it mean to engage with social issues as a writer? How do we speak responsibly\, with integrity\, and in a way that’s accountable to communities? When does speaking about injustice cause harm and how do we bear witness to pain without re-traumatizing or making pain a spectacle? How can we build writing practices that take place in community? These are some of the difficult questions we will work through\, as we think about and write about social justice.\nA MUSICAL ORBIT: THE CYCLICAL NATURE OF TIME with RUBY SINGH\nRuby SIngh will take you on a live looping journey\, from fundamental first steps to multi-loop compositions.\nWe will investigate the human voice through vocal percussion\, singing and improvisation.\nExploring the basics of rhythm\, harmony and melody\, we will learn to craft compositions in the moment.\nBring an instrument\, bring a friend and bring your curiosity.\nHOME\, GROWN with FRANCIS AREVALO\nEvery idea is a seed\, so the “Home\, Grown” workshop explores how we can best cultivate our creativity. Home\, Grown explores specifically how music\, poetry\, and collaboration can not only lead to powerful and beautiful art\, but also enrich and empower our lives. “Home\, Grown” will involve creative writing\, music production\, and teamwork.\nFINDING VOICE IN CONCRETE DETAIL with ANN-BERNICE THOMAS\nIn this workshop\, you will learn how to think like a poet. How to find yourself in life’s little details\, rooting your voice in the honest compassion of the everyday. You will mine yourself and practice trust in your voice\, to find and tell the stories that ache to be told.\n
