SUMMARY:Team Bouts: Day One
DESCRIPTION:This night will kick off the competitive section of Hullabaloo.\n7:00–8:30pm – First slate of preliminary team bouts at Astorino’s & The Prophouse Café\n8:30-10:00pm – Second slate of preliminary team bouts at Astorino’s & The Prophouse Café\nEvery team in Hullabaloo will perform in one bout this night\, either the first or second slate of prelims. The bout draw\, determining the time for each school’s bout\, will be conducted before the tournament begins. All teams are encouraged to attend the entire evening.\nThe poems will be judged by five random members of the audience who are not directly affiliated with any of the poets or schools. They will give each poem a score between 0 and 10. We will drop the high and low scores\, and each poem will receive a total score out of 30. Each bout has four rounds (three rounds of solo poems and a group piece round) so the highest possible team score is 120.\nPhoto by Jo Bee\nNo advance tickets or reserved seats. This is a free all-ages event. It may contain strong language\, controversial issues\, and words that make you re-evaluate your life. General seating.

SUMMARY:All-Star Slam
DESCRIPTION:Are your students finding poetry boring? Unexciting? An archaic form practiced by old people obsessed with nature? Try All-Star Slam. It brings the poignancy\, hilarity\, and immediacy of slam poetry competitions to the stage. The All-Star SLAM pits three former poetry slam champions head to head to head in an all-out battle of poetic verve and wit.\nHow does it work? Simple. The poets perform one poem each in three rounds\, all of which are judged on a scale of zero to ten by the audience (in this case\, the students!) In the end\, the winner is announced\, though in effect\, everyone has won. Students have been moved\, inspired\, and engaged by poetry\, often for the first time in their lives.\nAs one student had it: “This is better than Metallica!” The topics are engaging\, the presentation is amazing\, and the competition is riveting. Guaranteed to jumpstart students into writing careers of their own.\nWant to see it in action? Check out this video of the All-Star Slam (which is also called “Travellin’Slam” when it goes on tour outside of Vancouver):\nThis event is SOLD OUT. Interested school groups contact Chris Gilpin at wordplaypoets@gmail.com about the possibility of adding a show on Friday morning.\nThis is an all-ages event. It may contain strong language\, controversial issues\, and words that make you re-evaluate your life. General seating. This event is free for all festival participants and volunteers. You do not need to be a student to attend. Members of the general public are welcome.

SUMMARY:Spoken Word Jamboree featuring Sara Brickman
DESCRIPTION:The Spoken Word Jamboree kicks off the festival officially with feature poet Sara Brickman from Seattle. All teams will be invited to perform a one-minute intro poem to tell us more about themselves and their school.\nThe Jamboree provides all participating poets a chance to meet each other outside of a competition setting. It’s also where all the teams will register. Poets and coaches will receive artist passes that allow them free access to all Hullabaloo events. There will be a brief orientation and then the poetry will begin. However\, this is a public event. You don’t need to be on a participating team to attend. Don’t be shy. SUMMARY:East Van Poetry Salon
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver Poet Laureate\, Evelyn Lau\, and social media guru\, Sean Cranbury\, discuss publishing in the 21st century and how writers can make it work to their advantage. Literary journals\, publishers\, and the Internet will all be examined in detail as literary venues\, examining the content they seek and the opportunities they offer to writers. \nHosted by the co-founders of the East Van Poetry Salon\, Julie Peters (President of Vancouver Poetry House) and Chris Gilpin (Executive Director of Vancouver Poetry House). \n[box type=”info” style=”rounded” border=”full” icon=”none”]This discussion is a free event. Seating cannot be reserved in advance. For accessibility info\, click the venue name below.[/box] \nEast Van Poetry Salon is a quarterly event where writers\, readers\, and word enthusiasts gather to talk informally and quasi-academically about poetry. We aim to learn from each other and improve our own writing quality by creating opportunities to think critically.

SUMMARY:Word Circus
DESCRIPTION:A whirlwhind of words occurs as Sheri-D Wilson\, James Lamb\, Ikenna ‘OpenSecret’ Onyegbula\, and Billeh Nickerson blur the line between stage and page. \n[box type=”info” style=”rounded” border=”full” icon=”none”]Doors at 12:30pm. Show starts 1pm. [/box] \nThe round robin format allows the artists to respond to one another and build the energy in a spontaneous way. If you’ve ever seen a ‘workshop stage’ at a folk festival\, you’ll know how exciting it is to see artists perform in this more relaxed and informal atmosphere where anything can happen. \n[box type=”info” style=”rounded” border=”full” icon=”none”]This show is All Ages. It may contain strong language\, controversial issues\, and words that make you re-evaluate your life. General seating. Box office and Will Call will open with doors at 12:30pm. Box office is CASH ONLY. There is an ATM located directly across the street. Advance tickets (see below) can be bought with PayPal or credit card. Tickets are $10 in advance\, $12 at the door. For accessibility info\, click the venue name below.[/box] \nFrom Word Circus founder\, Justin McGrail: \nThe Word Circus began in Montreal in 1994 as a series of live performances by Fluffy Pagan Echoes\, the spoken word quintet featuring Scott Duncan\, Ran Elfassy\, Justin McGrail\, Victoria Stanton\, and Vince Tinguely. It broke away from the then standard poetry-reading format by incorporating group pieces\, memorized text\, and having the poets present in four thematic rounds. We also sat together on stage for the show\, which made alternating at the mike easier\, and made us really listen to each other’s performance. \nMoving to Vancouver in 1995\, I adapted the show format to a monthly series at the then just opened Whip Café Gallery on East 6th.  Each month\, three different local poets would be featured in a show that combined themes\, music\, and audience participation – in posters and event-listings audience members were encouraged to bring poetry. On stage were four chairs\, three of which would be occupied by our featured poets.  I would announce the theme of each round\, and ask the audience if anyone had brought a poem that worked with it. One poet from the audience would be invited onstage to join the trio\, and then we’d have four poems on one theme. Additionally\, the show featured DJ’s (mainly acid-jazz and house) who would live mix in music with each poem. The result was a groovy\, unpredictable\, fun show\, that ran for 14 months\, and included performances by Tim Lander\, David Campbell\, Alexandra Oliver\, Kedrick James\, Andrew Lithgow\, John Sobol\, Rick Keating\, Andrea Thompson\, Davy Bouvier\, Ralph Alfonso\, Sheri-D Wilson and many more. \nThe last Word Circus was in the summer of 1998\, which I hosted and performed in for the CBC on the Plaza\, with poets Diane Laloge\, Graham Olds\, SR Duncan\, and Ed Varney\, with music supplied by Jim Good. \nOne tradition maintained in Montreal and Vancouver was that the theme of the third round is always love. Cause\, everyone’s got at least one poem about love!

SUMMARY:Gender Failure
DESCRIPTION:  \nTwo of Canada’s most treasured and celebrated trans artists\, Ivan Coyote and Rae Spoon\, present their acclaimed multimedia show “Gender Failure\,” featuring animation and video elements from Seattle artist Clyde Petersen. Through visuals\, words\, sounds\, and original music\, “Gender Failure” explores and exposes the prolific pair’s failed attempts at fitting into the gender binary—and ultimately how the gender binary doesn’t add up. Coyote brings their razor-sharp timing and powerful narrative\, while Spoon adds an ethereal voice and poetic turns of phrase to the dynamic duo’s now seven-year-old artistic partnership. \nThis is also the official book launch of Gender Failure\, a poignant collection of autobiographical essays\, lyrics\, and images documenting Ivan and Rae’s personal journeys from gender failure to gender self-acceptance. Equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking\, it’s a book that will touch LGBTQ readers and others\, revealing\, with candor and insight\, that gender comes in more than two sizes. Gender Failure is co-written by Rae and Ivan and published by Arsenal Pulp Press. \n[box type=”info” style=”rounded” border=”full” icon=”none”]Doors at 7pm. SUMMARY:Mashed Poetics – Rage Against the Machine

SUMMARY:Spoken Word Masterclass with d'bi young
DESCRIPTION:S.O.R.P.L.U.S.I. is an acronym representing an arts-based personal and professional development methodology that emerges out of Dub Poetry and is founded on eight guiding principles of Self-knowledge\, Orality\, Rhythm\, Political content & context\, Language of communication\, Urgency\, Sacredness\, and Integrity. The methodology – based on the seminal work of pioneer Dub Poet Anita Stewart and developed by her daughter d’bi.young anitafrika – is an approach to artistic creation that (a) focuses on the holistic development of the artist in the process of creating their work; and (b) equips the artist with the tools to help others to develop as well. The method is unique in that its approach is holistic\, emphasizing creative\, physical\, emotional\, psychological and spiritual growth\, as well as it uses the individual’s lived-experience as catalyst for all explorations. \nThrough meticulous excavation of each principle\, using a range of meditations\, movement\, games\, creative exercises\, techniques\, and readings\, the artist learns how to engage in self-analysis and reflection while developing a critical-analytical framework and an oppression-awareness point-of-view\, both of which become central to their personal and creative process. Each Sorplusi principle is a challenge to individual artists to be continually self-aware\, self-implicating\, and honest before\, during\, and after generating artistic creations. \nSorplusi affirms each artist’s accountability to and responsibility for (in other words to account for and respond to) their communities\, co-creating a comprehensive eco-system in which artists and community members are mutually accountable\, responsible and empowered to affect social change in their lives. the methodology can be applied as a training and developmental tool in diverse contexts such as in schools (at all grade levels)\, teacher-training courses\, and community workshops. \n[box type=”info” style=”rounded” border=”full” icon=”none”]This event is All Ages. Each workshop has only 25 spots available. This workshop is three hours long. The only required materials are a notebook\, a writing utensil\, and a willingness to participate. SUMMARY:Some Birds Walk for the Hell of It
DESCRIPTION:East-Side Eternity in association with The Verses festival Of words presents \nC.R. AVERY \nwith \nLola Frost\nDJ Su Commandate\nDarcy McMurray\nLydia DeCarllo\nSusan Kania \nGet ready for a different kind of Sunday afternoon with C.R. Avery: one man hip hop beatbox blues harmonica americana iconoclast. \nThis is the official book launch for Some Birds Walk for the Hell of It published by Anvil Press. This book of poetry celebrates the virtues of the bohemian brigade\, late-night denizens of inconvenient beauty\, the dissolute and the temporary\, lawless black leather pioneers of innovation\, and every battle scarred member of this “helpless grey sky tribe”. Like a cross between Lenny Bruce and Anaïs Nin\, Avery’s poetry is alternately profane\, brilliantly vulgar\, outrageously funny and brash in its lonesome courage\, unsettling\, and unquestionably original. \nC.R. Avery has thrown down with several Van Slam poetry teams and the Verses Festival of Words is thrilled to welcome back this multidisciplinary maverick to launch of his third book of poetry and prose. Indulge in this weird and raucous moment with C.R. Avery\, DJ Su Comandante\, burlesque phenomena Lola Frost and Lydia DeCarllo\, and dance artists Darcy McMurray and Susan Kanial. \nHere’s the show described by CR himself: \nBreakdancing nuns to Beethoven’s Ode to Joy remixed with Cool J scratch and a beat from 1997. Who zoo? Yes\, Yes will then drop to a whisper for a the small choir to hum\, then will be beautifully interrupted by the conglomerate of an orgy turned loud three piece rock & roll band – Boom! You lazy shit! Burning Beatlemania to a pulp fiction with just the written word regurgitated up to an inside-speaking-spice-rum voice. Oh toe-to-toe yes\, yes just in time for the Russian-novel-loving air stewardess\, the postmodern librarian dancer & a burlesque-boogie-boo bee trap villainess to make their entrance disguised like Hank Williams as Luke the Drifter. The shifter of poetry from juke box to calvary mountain alley. What kind of show is this? It’s my book launch motherfucker\, on Anvil Press. Gonna be the goods. yes\, yes. \n[box type=”info” style=”rounded” border=”full” icon=”none”]Doors at 3pm. SUMMARY:Great Black North
DESCRIPTION:The Great Black North is a contemporary remix of the story of Black Canada. Told through the intertwining tapestry of poetic forms found on the page and stage\, The Great Black North presents some missing pieces of the jigsaw puzzle that help fit together a poetic picture of the Black Canadian experience. \nPoets from the anthology reading at this event are: Kevan Cameron\, Dr. Mason-John aka ‘Queenie’\, Wayde Compton\, Adelene da Soul Poet\, and Lillian Allen. The event will be hosted by Jillian Christmas (who is also in the anthology). \nMany African Canadians know their history in North America since the 17th century. However\, the rest of the world may be unaware of the history of enslaved Africans and slave auctions north of the 49th parallel\, as well as the free Blacks\, Loyalists and Maroons who made their journeys to the “promised land” of Canada. The Great Black North should be a valuable resource for the preservation of culture that is written and/or performed as dub poetry\, spoken word and slam. At the heart of this book is a poetic blend of literary and oral traditions that recognizes the past and present as they form a tangible foundation for future generations of poets. \nThis collection of over 90 poets documents the many styles that Black Canadians use to express themselves. The rhythms felt in The Great Black North stem from the vibrant pulse of poets such as the much translated and internationally honoured Africadian George Elliott Clarke who has just been appointed Toronto’s fourth Poet Laureate; Ian Keteku\, who was crowned the 2010 World Poetry Slam champion; Lillian Allen\, founder of the dub poetry tradition in Canada; and Afua Cooper\, who brought to light the hanging of an enslaved African woman\, Marie Joseph Angélique\, for the alleged burning of Montreal in 1734. \nFind out more at: http://blackcanadianpoetry.com \nAbout the editors: \nDr. Mason-John is an award-winning writer. SUMMARY:Haiku Deathmatch
DESCRIPTION:Using original haiku\, 16 poets – or haikusters – will battle it out in a head-to-head competition judged by the audience. \nSign-up is open to all and will occur from 12:00pm-12:30pm. Each poet should come prepared to perform up to 29 haiku (depending on how far they make it in the competition). Advance sign-up is not available. \nA haiku is a poem consisting of three metrical phrases of 5\, 7\, and 5 syllables. \nTraditionally\, haiku is a Japanese form\, most often used to describe nature\, but any subject matter is allowed in Haiku Death Match. The haiku can be funny\, sad\, sexy\, bizarre\, it doesn’t matter. Since the haiku is read aloud\, the emphasis will be on the number of syllables (17) not the lines. \nexample: \nthe worst time to have\na heart attack is during\na game of charades \n[box]This show is All Ages (but be prepared for Rabelaisian humour).[/box]

SUMMARY:Fernando Raguero vs. The World
DESCRIPTION:Fernando Raguero has been on four Vancouver Poetry Slam teams. He is the 2009 Haiku Deathmatch champion and the 2011 Erotica Slam champion. He has published six chapbooks. \nFernando spares no expense in his being direct with his poetry’s audience. He can amuse while offending\, educate while mocking\, and move you while making you gasp. He connects with all people on one level or another\, no matter how offended they may feign being. Raguero has graced stages across North America\, sold thousands of his chapbooks to eager poetry lovers\, and ventured out onto stand-up comedy stages. \nFernando is a local and national favorite. He is especially loved by SUV drivers\, muffin farters\, wisecrackers\, merrymakers and socks. \n[box]Poets can sign-up to read on behalf of The World 2–2:30pm at The Havana Theatre on the day of the event. You will have three minutes to read your poem. No advance sign-up available. This is\, technically\, an open mic\, just a very awesome one\, with extra Raguero.[/box]

SUMMARY:Lillian Allen
DESCRIPTION:Lillian Allen\, pioneer of dub-poetry\, ground breaker for women in her field performs at Thursday’s latenight show. \nTwo-time Juno Award winning dub poet\, Lillian Allen performs a politically-infused style of poetry which has turned the heads of not simply judges and patrons\, but government officials as well. Assertive while remaining rhythmic\, Allen is often cited as a pioneer of this genre of poetry\, known for its tendency toward politicized lyricisms. Playwright\, producer\, director\, musician and poet\, Allen’s comprehension of the facets of performance is vast\, varied and experienced. Unafraid of labeling herself with the f-word (feminist)\, her work has been termed groundbreaking for women\, and in 1991 her first album\, Revolutionary Tea Party\, was declared a Landmark Album of the Past 20 Years by Ms. Magazine. \nAs a playwright she has produced One Bedroom With Dignity (1987)\, Love & Other Strange Things (1991 and 1993)\, and the radio play Marketplace(1995). Her creativity also extends to film\, as co-producer and co-director of Blak Wi Blakk…\, a documentary on Jamaican dub poet Mutabaruka. Beyond writing\, Lillian is a recognized authority and activist on issues of diversity in culture\, cross cultural learning\, and the arts in education. \nAllen’s political themes and depth of vision are woven in an enchanting and unique blend of orality and the written word. Her poetic voice has spread beyond international poetry circles and music scenes into corners of the African Diaspora and across the spectrum of society. \n[box]This show is All Ages.[/box] \n[box]Tickets holders to CIPS Bouts #5-#8 will receive free admission to this show. Stick around![/box] \n[box]Tickets are $8 in advance\, $10 at the door. Or you could buy a festival pass.[/box]
