SUMMARY:Last Chance Slam
DESCRIPTION:One final spot in the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam goes to the winner of this open sign-up competition. \n12 sign-up spots will be made available\, but there is NO ADVANCE SIGN-UP. The format is the same as the regular Van Slam winter season. \nPoets present poems that are three minutes in length or shorter. The top five move on to the second round. Scores are cumulative. \nThe winner gains a spot in CIPS. Poems used in this Last Chance Slam can be repeated in CIPS. They do not count against the No Repeats Ever rule. At the end of the night\, we do the bout draw for CIPS\, determining who will face whom in Day One and Day Two of the tournament. \nPlus\, our host and feature will be the Archduke of Awesome\, Mighty Mike McGee. He has performed in thousands of venues all over North America\, and was one of the first Americans ever to perform poetry at the University la Sorbonne in Paris\, France. In 2006\, McGee became the first person to win two separate individual titles by being crowned the 2006 Individual World Poetry Slam Champion\, besting over 70 of the world’s best ranked slam poets. His “stand-up poetry” has been written about in Writer’s Digest magazine\, and been featured on NPR\, HBO and CBC. He has been a big part of the Vancouver Slam scene for the past decade and we’re stoked to have him back. \n[box type=”info” style=”rounded” border=”full” icon=”none”]Doors at 7pm. Poets sign-up 7–7:30pm. Show starts 8pm. [/box] \nThe Vancouver Poetry Slam happens every Monday at Café Deux Soleils. In the past two years\, it has been selling out early and often. This special show will be no exception. You will need to arrive before 7pm if you expect to get a seat. \n[box type=”info” style=”rounded” border=”full” icon=”none”]This show is All Ages. Box office will open with doors at 7pm. Box office is CASH ONLY. There is an ATM located directly across the street. No advance tickets available for this event; however\, festival passes will gain you admission conditional on capacity not being reached. For accessibility info\, click the venue name below.[/box]

SUMMARY:Some Birds Walk for the Hell of It
DESCRIPTION:East-Side Eternity in association with The Verses festival Of words presents \nC.R. AVERY \nwith \nLola Frost\nDJ Su Commandate\nDarcy McMurray\nLydia DeCarllo\nSusan Kania \nGet ready for a different kind of Sunday afternoon with C.R. Avery: one man hip hop beatbox blues harmonica americana iconoclast. \nThis is the official book launch for Some Birds Walk for the Hell of It published by Anvil Press. This book of poetry celebrates the virtues of the bohemian brigade\, late-night denizens of inconvenient beauty\, the dissolute and the temporary\, lawless black leather pioneers of innovation\, and every battle scarred member of this “helpless grey sky tribe”. Like a cross between Lenny Bruce and Anaïs Nin\, Avery’s poetry is alternately profane\, brilliantly vulgar\, outrageously funny and brash in its lonesome courage\, unsettling\, and unquestionably original. \nC.R. Avery has thrown down with several Van Slam poetry teams and the Verses Festival of Words is thrilled to welcome back this multidisciplinary maverick to launch of his third book of poetry and prose. Indulge in this weird and raucous moment with C.R. Avery\, DJ Su Comandante\, burlesque phenomena Lola Frost and Lydia DeCarllo\, and dance artists Darcy McMurray and Susan Kanial. \nHere’s the show described by CR himself: \nBreakdancing nuns to Beethoven’s Ode to Joy remixed with Cool J scratch and a beat from 1997. Who zoo? Yes\, Yes will then drop to a whisper for a the small choir to hum\, then will be beautifully interrupted by the conglomerate of an orgy turned loud three piece rock & roll band – Boom! You lazy shit! Burning Beatlemania to a pulp fiction with just the written word regurgitated up to an inside-speaking-spice-rum voice. Oh toe-to-toe yes\, yes just in time for the Russian-novel-loving air stewardess\, the postmodern librarian dancer & a burlesque-boogie-boo bee trap villainess to make their entrance disguised like Hank Williams as Luke the Drifter. The shifter of poetry from juke box to calvary mountain alley. What kind of show is this? It’s my book launch motherfucker\, on Anvil Press. Gonna be the goods. yes\, yes. \n[box type=”info” style=”rounded” border=”full” icon=”none”]Doors at 3pm. Show starts 3:30pm. [/box] \n[box type=”info” style=”rounded” border=”full” icon=”none”]This show is 18+. Box office and Will Call will open with doors at 3pm. Box office is CASH ONLY. SUMMARY:Great Black North
DESCRIPTION:The Great Black North is a contemporary remix of the story of Black Canada. Told through the intertwining tapestry of poetic forms found on the page and stage\, The Great Black North presents some missing pieces of the jigsaw puzzle that help fit together a poetic picture of the Black Canadian experience. \nPoets from the anthology reading at this event are: Kevan Cameron\, Dr. Mason-John aka ‘Queenie’\, Wayde Compton\, Adelene da Soul Poet\, and Lillian Allen. The event will be hosted by Jillian Christmas (who is also in the anthology). \nMany African Canadians know their history in North America since the 17th century. However\, the rest of the world may be unaware of the history of enslaved Africans and slave auctions north of the 49th parallel\, as well as the free Blacks\, Loyalists and Maroons who made their journeys to the “promised land” of Canada. The Great Black North should be a valuable resource for the preservation of culture that is written and/or performed as dub poetry\, spoken word and slam. At the heart of this book is a poetic blend of literary and oral traditions that recognizes the past and present as they form a tangible foundation for future generations of poets. \nThis collection of over 90 poets documents the many styles that Black Canadians use to express themselves. The rhythms felt in The Great Black North stem from the vibrant pulse of poets such as the much translated and internationally honoured Africadian George Elliott Clarke who has just been appointed Toronto’s fourth Poet Laureate; Ian Keteku\, who was crowned the 2010 World Poetry Slam champion; Lillian Allen\, founder of the dub poetry tradition in Canada; and Afua Cooper\, who brought to light the hanging of an enslaved African woman\, Marie Joseph Angélique\, for the alleged burning of Montreal in 1734. \nFind out more at: http://blackcanadianpoetry.com \nAbout the editors: \nDr. Mason-John is an award-winning writer. Her first novel Borrowed Body (renamed The Banana Kid) won the Mind Book of the Year Award\, and was named the British Color Purple by the UK media. Mason-John began her writing career as an international correspondent covering Australian Aboriginal Land Rights and Black Deaths in custody\, Sinn Fein Prisoners in Northern Ireland\, political unrest\, education\, and the arts. She is the author of four non-fiction books\, one award winning novel\, and a collection of poetry\, prose and plays\, as well as having several plays produced. \nKevan Anthony Cameron\, also known as Scruffmouth is a scribe\, spoken poet\, performer and proud co-editor of The Great Black North. He is a veteran of the poetry slam scene in North America and aims to “edutain” with his work that focuses on knowledge of self\, identity and vocalizing the stories of people of African descent at home and abroad. Kevan was born in Edmonton\, Alberta to Jamaican parents.

SUMMARY:Fernando Raguero vs. The World
DESCRIPTION:Fernando Raguero has been on four Vancouver Poetry Slam teams. He is the 2009 Haiku Deathmatch champion and the 2011 Erotica Slam champion. He has published six chapbooks. \nFernando spares no expense in his being direct with his poetry’s audience. He can amuse while offending\, educate while mocking\, and move you while making you gasp. He connects with all people on one level or another\, no matter how offended they may feign being. Raguero has graced stages across North America\, sold thousands of his chapbooks to eager poetry lovers\, and ventured out onto stand-up comedy stages. \nFernando is a local and national favorite. He is especially loved by SUV drivers\, muffin farters\, wisecrackers\, merrymakers and socks. \n[box]Poets can sign-up to read on behalf of The World 2–2:30pm at The Havana Theatre on the day of the event. You will have three minutes to read your poem. No advance sign-up available. This is\, technically\, an open mic\, just a very awesome one\, with extra Raguero.[/box]

SUMMARY:Lillian Allen
DESCRIPTION:Lillian Allen\, pioneer of dub-poetry\, ground breaker for women in her field performs at Thursday’s latenight show. \nTwo-time Juno Award winning dub poet\, Lillian Allen performs a politically-infused style of poetry which has turned the heads of not simply judges and patrons\, but government officials as well. Assertive while remaining rhythmic\, Allen is often cited as a pioneer of this genre of poetry\, known for its tendency toward politicized lyricisms. Playwright\, producer\, director\, musician and poet\, Allen’s comprehension of the facets of performance is vast\, varied and experienced. Unafraid of labeling herself with the f-word (feminist)\, her work has been termed groundbreaking for women\, and in 1991 her first album\, Revolutionary Tea Party\, was declared a Landmark Album of the Past 20 Years by Ms. Magazine. \nAs a playwright she has produced One Bedroom With Dignity (1987)\, Love & Other Strange Things (1991 and 1993)\, and the radio play Marketplace(1995). Her creativity also extends to film\, as co-producer and co-director of Blak Wi Blakk…\, a documentary on Jamaican dub poet Mutabaruka. Beyond writing\, Lillian is a recognized authority and activist on issues of diversity in culture\, cross cultural learning\, and the arts in education. \nAllen’s political themes and depth of vision are woven in an enchanting and unique blend of orality and the written word. Her poetic voice has spread beyond international poetry circles and music scenes into corners of the African Diaspora and across the spectrum of society. \n[box]This show is All Ages.[/box] \n[box]Tickets holders to CIPS Bouts #5-#8 will receive free admission to this show. SUMMARY:East Van Poetry Salon: What is Slam Poetry?
DESCRIPTION:[quote]”There is no such thing as slam poetry. There is only the poetry slam.\n ~Marc Smith\, founder of the slam movement[/quote] \nThe slam movement is over 25 years old\, yet there is still little consensus around what slam poetry is\, or if it exists as a distinct poetic form. Taylor Mali has attempted to define slam poetry as a high-energy presentation of accessible writing. Still\, this definition creates as many questions as it answers. What sort of writing can be considered ‘accessible’\, and who is it ‘accessible’ to? \nChris Gilpin will moderate the discussion. He will be joined by Julie Peters\, Leah Horlick\, and Ikenna ‘OpenSecret’ Okyegbula. Together they will analyze the many ways in which the word ‘Slam’ is used and the perceptions and misperceptions caused by the term ‘Slam Poetry’. There will be an extended Q & A session so that the audience can participate in the discussion. \nChris Gilpin has extensively researched the history of the Vancouver Poetry Slam\, culminating in the publication of his two part essay on the first 15 years of Van Slam in the Canadian Review of Literature in Performance in 2011. He is the Co-Director of Verses Festival of Words. \nJulie Peters holds a Masters in Canadian Poetry from McGill. Twice\, she has won the right to represent Vancouver at the Women of the World Poetry Slam. She is a prolific blogger\, writing on health\, sexuality\, and poetry. \nLeah Horlick is the Poetry Editor of PRISM international. Leah’s first collection of poetry\, Riot Lung\, was released by Thistledown Press in fall 2012. She has also participated in the Vancouver Poetry Slam. \nIkenna ‘OpenSecret’ Okyegbula is the 2011 Canadian Individual Poetry Slam champion and a 2009 CFSW Team Slam champion. He is also the festival director of YouthCanSlam\, the first-ever national youth team slam championships\, which will launch in Ottawa in the summer of 2013. \n[box]This show is All Ages.[/box]

SUMMARY:East Van Poetry Salon: Lights\, Camera\, Poetry!
DESCRIPTION:The poetry video has become an increasingly important form of distribution for poets. For many\, YouTube has become a more common way to discover new poets and their work than the library. Is YouTube shaping the way that poets write? Which cinematic techniques work well with which poetic styles? \nChris Gilpin and Julie Peters take you on a tour of some of the best poetry videos ever produced. Poetry videos will be grouped into three categories: one-shot / performance\, music video style\, and animation. After each group of videos is played\, Chris and Julie will converse with the audience\, discussing what makes these videos work or what they could have done differently. \nChris Gilpin holds a B.A. in Film Production from UBC. His short film “Remembrance Dance” was an official selection of the Toronto International Film Festival. He is an active Vancouver poet and co-director of Verses Festival of Words. \nJulie Peters holds a Masters in Canadian Poetry from McGill. SUMMARY:Mashed Poetics – Aretha Franklin's Greatest Hits
DESCRIPTION:Mashed Poetics is a night of spoken word and music mash up where poetic collaboration and cross pollination occur and the divide between “page” and “stage” poets is blurred. A classic music album is chosen and poets are assigned a song from the album to create a new piece of work for the show. A cover band is also created to perform the chosen album live with poems performed in between the songs by the poets. Mashed Poetics has been running in Vancouver for the past three and a half years. \nMashed Poetics has been a part of the Verses Festival (formerly the Vancouver International Poetry Festival) since the festival’s inception. Previous album’s performed at the festival include Led Zeppelin’s Led Zeppelin IV and Licensed to Ill by the Beastie Boys. For the 2013 Verses Festival the album is Aretha Franklin’s Greatest Hits from 1971. And we are extremely happy to announce Chelsea Johnson will be performing the vocals for this show. \nSome other albums we have performed include Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid”\, The White Stripes’ “Elephant”\, Guns and Roses’ “Appetite for Destruction”\, Rush’s “Moving Pictures”\, Prince’s “Purple Rain” and The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s “Are You Experienced.” \n[box]No minors allowed. SUMMARY:Ivan Coyote & Veda Hille
DESCRIPTION:Ivan Coyote is interested in collaborations where the text and the score are equal players\, not just storytelling with musical accompaniment\, but a conversation between two artists: the text is listening to the chord progressions and pacing itself with the downbeat\, and the music is responding to what happens next in the story. \nIvan shows us the transformative power of storytelling\, that collecting and remembering oral history not only preserves a vital part of our families and where we come from\, but that a good story can help inspire us to reinvent a better future. Ivan has released five books with Arsenal Pulp Press. \nVeda Hille will be accompanying Ivan on her piano. Veda has toured and recorded\, playing hundreds of shows and festivals and has released on 13 records. She is an East Van favourite who wins over audiences with her wit\, charm\, and musicianship. \n[box]No minors allowed. SUMMARY:Team Finals featuring Amy Everhart
DESCRIPTION:The 3rd annual HULLABALOO FINALS NIGHT will determine which school has the best poetic chops in all of British Columbia. Amy Everhart will start the evening with a feature set of his award-winning spoken word poetry. Then the top four teams from the preliminary bouts will face off against each other with the 2013 Hullabaloo team championship at stake.\nAmy Everhart has been called one of “America’s most refreshing Poetic Voices”\, a whirling-dervish of a performer whose voice sucker punched itself into the National Consciousness when she made history in Berkley California by being the first Woman to ever win the Individual World Poetry Slam 2009\, the most highly coveted title in United States performance poetry. Amy Everhart has been published in multiple Denver poetry anthologies and is the Author of 3 Chapbooks\, (In Truth\, Exchanging Guilty Pleasures For Honesty\, and Great\, Now Everyone has Mad Cow)\, as well as one CD entitled I’d Rather Be.\n“To watch Amy Everhart perform is a physical act\, a naturally gifted writer who literally decimates herself on stage\, a tiny prometheus with poems like eagles that tear her apart. As an audience member\, you cannot escape the feeling that the newly found clarity gained by seeing her\, shines just a bit like stolen fire”\n~Ken Arkind\n“She moves and speaks as if she is equal parts conductor and virtuoso violinist. Like a conductor she directs and moves her listener with subtle\, gentle nudges\, instead of forcing\, she coerces you into a state of believing anything is possible.” ~Ed Mabrey\, 2007 Individual World Poetry Slam Champion\nThis is an all-ages event. It may contain strong language\, controversial issues\, and words that make you re-evaluate your life. General seating. This event is free for all festival participants and volunteers.\nUPDATE (April 6\, 10am): Advance tickets are not available on the day of the show. However\, many tickets are still available and can be bought\, starting at 6:30pm at The Roundhouse./em>\n$5 for school groups or youth groups. SUMMARY:Individual Poetry Slam Finals
DESCRIPTION:16 individual poets – one from each school – will run a gauntlet of poetic challenges to decide who will become the second-ever Hullabaloo Indie Champion.\nIndie Finals Night has a unique format\, one that challenges our poets to think outside of the three-minute slam box.\nRound One: The Survivor Round\nAll 16 poets perform a 3-minute poem. The 8 highest-scoring poets advance to the next round.\nRound Two: The Lightning Round\nClean slate (scores are not cumulative). The 8 advancing poets perform a 1-minute poem. The 4 highest-scoring poets advance to the next round.\nRound Three: The Anarchy Round\nClean slate again. The 4 advancing poets perform a 3-minute poem; however\, they must break one (or more) of the conventional rules of slam. That’s right. The poet must use a prop\, a costume\, a musical instrument\, prerecorded track or perform a group piece with another poet. The time penalty is still in effect. Going over time does not qualify as breaking a slam rule. Any poet who does NOT break one of the slam rules listed above will received a two-point deduction on their score. The highest-scoring poet in this round becomes the Hullabaloo Indie Champion.\nThis is an all-ages event. It may contain strong language\, controversial issues\, and words that make you re-evaluate your life. General seating. This event is free for all festival participants and volunteers.\nAdvance tickets will NOT be mailed to buyers. They can be picked up at the Will Call station in The Roundhouse’s Exhibition Hall up to one hour before the show begins.
