SUMMARY:Tomboy Survival Guide
DESCRIPTION:Tomboy Survival Guide is part anthem\, part campfire story\, and part instructions for the dismantling of the gender stories we tell ourselves and each other. Writer and storyteller Ivan Coyote and an all-tomboy band invite the audience to join them as they navigate the narrow halls of public washrooms\, skirt the treachery of growing up under the threat of being picked to be a flower girl at their aunt’s wedding\, triumph over tying a double Windsor knot\, and discover the beauty in realizing they were handsome\, not pretty\, all along. \nBuy tickets for Tomboy Survival Guide \nTomboy Survival Guide is the music and story-driven collaboration of award winning writer and storyteller Ivan Coyote\, the hummingbird high-energied drummer and percussionist Sally Zori\, the mellifluous basslines of Pebbles Willekes\, and the subtle and graceful tinkerings of trumpet player Alison Gorman. These four fast friends and fellow tomboys have been locking themselves in a small dim room once a week all winter to craft this world premier of their full-length show. Blending story\, lyric\, music\, soundscape\, memory and maybe even the odd elementary-school photograph\, Tomboy Survival Guide is a live stage experience that defies gender and genre boxes with the same compassionate defiance and fearless and tender truth-telling that Ivan Coyote has been bringing to their work for nearly two decades of publishing and performing. \nSpecial guest performers include Veda Hille & Kinnie Starr. \nFollow the Tomboy Survival Guide project on twitter or facebook or youtube. \n[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9gRHAtGL9w?rel=0] \nDoors open at 7pm. Show starts 8pm. \nThis show is All Ages (the balcony will be reserved for audience members 18 and younger while alcohol will be allowed on the ground level). It may contain strong language\, controversial issues\, and words that make you re-evaluate your life. General seating. Advance tickets are NOT mailed out; they can be picked up at the Will Call station at the venue. Box office and Will Call will open with doors at 7pm. Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable. \n Brown Paper Tickets Ticket Widget Loading…Click Here to visit the Brown Paper Tickets event page. \nAccessibility: \nRead the updated overview of The Rio Theatre (completed in February 2015) or the complete updated audit for detailed accessibility information. These documents are available thanks to the important work of the Radical Access Mapping Project. \nAn American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter will be interpreting the presentation for the audience.

SUMMARY:CIPS Orientation
DESCRIPTION:Poets participating in the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam are required to attend this orientation. This event has been completely revamped from last year. The focus will be on making sure everyone is aware of the rules and format of the tournament\, the location of the venues\, community resources available to them\, and the Honour Code (hint: play nice and everything will be groovy). You can expect to hear from the festival directors\, Jillian Christmas and Chris Gilpin\, and from our CIPS Tournament Director\, shayne avec i grec\, who will tell you all kinds of useful things\, including the make-up of the protest committee (which we hope will never be convened). \nIt’s also a great chance for everyone to meet each other and socialize outside of the competition. After the orientation\, visiting poets who are SpoCan venue representatives will receive their travel subsidy cheque. \nPoets are invited to stick around for the new-to-Verses 2015 open mike Hello My Name Is …  that follows at 3:00 pm. \nThis discussion is for CIPS competing poets ONLY. \nAccessibility Info: \nHavana Theatre is an accessible venue. If this has not been clarified by organizers already\, please consider contacting them for details. \nOnce inside\, you’ll find a spacious wood-floored hall\, open concept\, tables and chairs set up throughout. The stage (accessible only via stairs) is to your left\, and the washrooms towards the back of the hall. The washrooms are currently gendered\, but sometimes will be marked “gender neutral”. There are two sets of washrooms. The one to the left of the bar is currently marked “men”\, is on the same level and is now wheelchair accessible\, with 2 urinals and one wheelchair access stall and one non-wheelchair access stall. The one to the right of the bar\, currently marked “women”\, is wheelchair accessible with no urinals and one additional stall. *update as of June 2013: please note that a new\, wheelchair accessible men’s bathroom has been created. The finishing touches are still being added\, and the door has been adjusted to more easily fit wheelchair/scooter users\, but overall the space is great. \nRead the Radical Accessibility Mapping Project’s WISE Hall overview or complete audit.

SUMMARY:Word Circus
DESCRIPTION:A whirlwind of words occurs as Ian Ferrier\, David McGimpsey\, Tanya Evanson\, Robert Priest\, and Barbara Adler blur the line between stage and page. \nBuy tickets for Word Circus \nThe round robin format allows the artists to respond to one another and build the energy in a spontaneous way. If you’ve ever seen a ‘workshop stage’ at a folk festival\, you’ll know how exciting it is to see artists perform in this more relaxed and informal atmosphere where anything can happen. \nFrom Word Circus founder\, Justin McGrail: \nThe Word Circus began in Montreal in 1994 as a series of live performances by Fluffy Pagan Echoes\, the spoken word quintet featuring Scott Duncan\, Ran Elfassy\, Justin McGrail\, Victoria Stanton\, and Vince Tinguely. It broke away from the then standard poetry-reading format by incorporating group pieces\, memorized text\, and having the poets present in four thematic rounds. We also sat together on stage for the show\, which made alternating at the mike easier\, and made us really listen to each other’s performance. \nMoving to Vancouver in 1995\, I adapted the show format to a monthly series at the then just opened Whip Café Gallery on East 6th.  Each month\, three different local poets would be featured in a show that combined themes\, music\, and audience participation – in posters and event-listings audience members were encouraged to bring poetry. On stage were four chairs\, three of which would be occupied by our featured poets.  I would announce the theme of each round\, and ask the audience if anyone had brought a poem that worked with it. One poet from the audience would be invited onstage to join the trio\, and then we’d have four poems on one theme. Additionally\, the show featured DJ’s (mainly acid-jazz and house) who would live mix in music with each poem. The result was a groovy\, unpredictable\, fun show\, that ran for 14 months\, and included performances by Tim Lander\, David Campbell\, Alexandra Oliver\, Kedrick James\, Andrew Lithgow\, John Sobol\, Rick Keating\, Andrea Thompson\, Davy Bouvier\, Ralph Alfonso\, Sheri-D Wilson and many more. \nThe last Word Circus was in the summer of 1998\, which I hosted and performed in for the CBC on the Plaza\, with poets Diane Laloge\, Graham Olds\, SR Duncan\, and Ed Varney\, with music supplied by Jim Good. \nOne tradition maintained in Montreal and Vancouver was that the theme of the third round is always love — ’cause\, everyone’s got at least one poem about love! \nThis show is All Ages. General seating. Box office and Will Call will open with doors at 2:30pm. Box office is CASH ONLY. There is an ATM located in the building. \nThis show may contain strong language\, controversial issues\, and words that make you re-evaluate your life. Inspired by Gloria Anzaldua’s La Fronteras/Borderlands\, we will discuss the relationships various races\, genders\, sexualities\, and languages have with each other and how we find a space to define ourselves within a world that often asks us to choose. \nBuy tickets for Spoken Word Masterclass with Sister Outsider \nSister Outsider Poetry is an award-winning duo representing two of the top three female slam poets in the world\, Dominique Christina and Denice Frohman. SUMMARY:Seeding the Poem: Masterclass with Robert Priest
DESCRIPTION:We will focus on techniques for writing micro or ‘seed’ poems — aphorisms\, slogans\, hook lines\, jokes\, maxims etc. with a view to also using them as centering points for longer oral/musical pieces such as spoken word poems\, song lyrics or even formal poems such as sonnets or villanelles. Participants should come away with at least one\, and probably a lot more than one\, micro work and and at least the beginnings of a maximally sized work containing the micro work. \nBuy tickets for Seeding the Poem: Masterclass with Robert Priest \nRobert Priest\, is the author of fourteen books of poetry\, three plays\, two novels\, lots of musical CDS\, one hit song and many columns for Now Magazine . His words have been decried in the legislature\, posted in the Transit system\, quoted in the Farmer’s Almanac\, and sung on Sesame Street. His 2008 book: Reading the Bible Backwards peaked at number two on the Globe and Mail’s poetry list. Rosa Rose\, a book of children’s verse\, in praise of inspirational figures (Wolsak & Wynn) recently won a silver moonbeam award in the U.S. and is a book of honour in the Lion and Unicorn Award for Excellence in children’s poetry in North America. A new book of poems for adults\, Previously Feared Darkness\, was published in Sept 2013 by ECW press. \nOn His Poetry For Grown-Ups: \n“Poetry full of flashes of insight. Imaginative in a strange way\, he takes inordinate chances with logic\, countering absurdity with absurdity\, and expanding our sense of human emotional possibilities.”\n-The Oxford Companion to Canadian Literature \n“Grand & Mystic”\n-Jason Anderson (Eye Magazine) \n“It’s lyrical\, mesmerizing and not overtly melodic or word anorexic pomo\, but tenderly sublime. There’s meat on the bones and it’s fresh. Priest renders the quotidian and intellectualizes it for us in a genius-sampling tool–himself.”\n-Broken Pencil \n“A Canadian gem. For 2-5 year olds it’s as the date perfection itself. This should be in every child’s home.”\n-CBC Radio \n“These poems will undoubtedly be memorized and sung for a long time to come.”\n-Canadian Book Review Annual \n“Rosa Rose and Other Poems is a beautiful poetry collection that needs to be on every child’s bookshelf and is sure to make young readers lovers of history and poetry.”\n-Canadian Materials Magazine \nOnly 30 registrations are available for this exclusive workshop experience. Box office and Will Call will open with doors at 2:30pm. Box office is CASH ONLY. There is an ATM located in the building. \nAdvance registrations are NOT mailed out; they can be picked up at the Will Call station at the venue.
