SUMMARY:Hullabaloo Team Bouts: Day Two
DESCRIPTION:By the second day of prelims\, the tournament will be in full swing. Some teams will be flying high\, others will be working hard to improve their ranking. \nAlma VanDusen & Peter Kaye rooms (downstairs from the main concourse).\n Doors at 12:30pm.\n 1pm–2:30pm – First slate of preliminary team bouts.\n 3pm-4:30pm – Second slate of preliminary team bouts. \nEvery team in Hullabaloo will perform in one bout this night\, either the first or second slate of prelims. The bout draw\, determining the time for each school’s bout\, will be conducted before the tournament begins. All teams are encouraged to attend the entire evening. \nThe poems will be judged by five random members of the audience who are not directly affiliated with any of the poets or schools. They will give each poem a score between 0 and 10. We will drop the high and low scores\, and each poem will receive a total score out of 30. Each bout has four rounds (three rounds of solo poems and a group piece round) so the highest possible team score is 120. \nOpen to the general public. All Ages. General seating. Seating cannot be reserved in advance. \nAccessibility info: \nThe VPL Central Branch has elevators to reach the downstairs rooms where the Hullabaloo events are being held. SUMMARY:Hullabaloo Underground Indies
DESCRIPTION:Underground Indies is the chance for individual slammers to show the breadth and depth of their poetic skills. After day one of prelims on Friday April 24th\, we’ll take the poetry off the stage and put it into a different format. The audience will be arranged in a circle around the performance area. There will be no stage and no microphone. Instead 16 poets will compete in a head-to-head format to determine the best slam poet at Hullabaloo.\nAlice MacKay Room (downstairs from the main concourse).\n Starts after Day One Team Bouts\, around 10:30pm.\nEnds around midnight.\nRules:\n\nEach school can nominate one poet to represent them at Underground Indies. This might be the winner of your school slam or your team captain. The selection process is up to the school or organization. If we have less than 16 reps\, then we will have an open sign-up directly proceeding the competition to bring the number of slammers up to 16.\nThere are no judges\, or rather\, everyone is a judge. 16 poets are randomly chosen into 8 pairings. In each pairing\, the two poets play rock/paper/scissors to determine who goes first. After both poets have performed\, the winner is determined by audience applause.\nTo go all the way and complete the final match at Underground Indies\, a poet will need four poems.\nThe time limit of 3 minutes and 10 seconds is still in effect. If a poet goes over time\, the host will enter the circle and interrupt their poem.\nAs in previous Indies Finals\, the final round has no rules. It is the Anarchy Round. You can have multiple people\, music\, props\, costumes\, whatever you like. However\, unlike previous years\, breaking the rules is no longer a requirement of the Anarchy Round. And yes\, the time penalty is still in effect in the Anarchy Round. That is one rule you can’t break.\nAccessibility info\nThe VPL Central Branch has elevators to reach the downstairs rooms where the Hullabaloo events are being held. There are wheelchair accessible bathrooms. For more details\, refer to their list of facilities.

SUMMARY:All-Star Slam
DESCRIPTION:Are your students finding poetry boring? Unexciting? An archaic form practiced by old people obsessed with nature? Try All-Star Slam. It brings the poignancy\, hilarity\, and immediacy of slam poetry competitions to the stage. The All-Star Slam pits three former poetry slam champions head to head to head in an all-out battle of poetic verve and wit.\nBuy tickets for All-Star Slam\nHow does it work? Simple. Students have been moved\, inspired\, and engaged by poetry\, often for the first time in their lives.\nAs one student had it: “This is better than Metallica!” The topics are engaging\, the presentation is amazing\, and the competition is riveting. Guaranteed to jumpstart students into writing careers of their own.\nHosted by 2005 Slam Champion and All-Star founder\, Brendan McLeod (pictured in video below).\nTo bring a school group to this show\, contact Johnny MacRae through wordplaypoets@gmail.com.\nDoors at noon.\n Show starts at 12:30pm.\n Show ends at 2pm.\nWant to see it in action? SUMMARY:That One Thing You Said: an exhibit of visual poetry
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores language as an agent in pivotal moments\, whether interpersonally\, socially or globally. Five visual poets (Jordan Abel\, Dina Del Bucchia\, Lindsay Cahill\, Helen Hajnoczky\, and Eric Schmaltz) create works that respond to this concept. The exhibit hopes to blur the distinction between visual poetry and visual art by engaging with progressive\, reactionary and confessional texts. Created in partnership with Poetry Is Dead Magazine. \nCurated by Daniel Zomparelli \nCome to the launch party for this exhibit and meet the artists on Sunday\, April 19th\, 4–7pm. The exhibit will be at the Havana Gallery until April 28th. \nAccessibility Info: \nHavana Gallery is an accessible venue. To reach the theatre\, you must pass through the restaurant to the gallery space. On the right\, is a black door leading into the theatre. There is a narrow hallway and two doors to access the performance space\, but no stairs.

SUMMARY:KT Job features at the Last Chance Slam
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver poetry house presents feature poet\, KT Job\, KT is lost in the LGBTQ alphabet soup and awash on a sea of androgyny. A biology graduate\, recovering addict and agriculture aficionado\, KT uses both the academic and life lessons she’s learned to sow the seeds of environmental consciousness while offering vulnerable glimpses of her journey. A proverbial gender-bending badass\, KT brings light to the rainbow spectrum giving audience more than enough organically grown food for thought to chew on throughout her performances. A recent fixture on the national spoken word community\, KT has represented St.Catherines Poetry slam in CFSW\, CIPS and Slamtario diligently for the last three years. An arts organizer\, performer and maverick of a human being\, KT is known to bring out the inner child and have them play in dirt. \nTHIS IS THE LAST CHANCE SLAM where the the winner is automatically entered into the Semi Finals. Only poets who are not already in the top 15 can compete. There will be an open mic and two-round poetry slam (3 min). \nCafe Deux Soleils and the Van Slam strive to be a trans friendly place and a hate speech free zone. Help us with that. We also acknowledge that this event takes place on unceded First Nations Territory. \n\nAlso\, be kind to our VOLUNTEER door staff.
