There are two sets of washrooms. The one to the left of the bar is currently marked “men”\, is on the same level and is now wheelchair accessible\, with 2 urinals and one wheelchair access stall and one non-wheelchair access stall. The finishing touches are still being added\, and the door has been adjusted to more easily fit wheelchair/scooter users\, but overall the space is great.\nRead the Radical Accessibility Mapping Project’s WISE Hall overview or complete audit.

We’ll have an open slam for poets 13-19 years of age along with an open mic for poems written in the workshop. \nWe’re living up to our name. It seems we were TOO LOUD for the library at our last slam so now we are moving on up to Level 7 Boardroom. Take the elevator all the way to the 7th floor\, turn right and the room is right through the big wooden doors. \nPlease bring writing utensils and something to write on. \nTHIS IS A FREE EVENT!! And it’s an excellent opportunity for those poets in the Youth Slam playoffs to work on their FINALS poems. \nThe workshop starts at 5:30 pm. The Slam starts at 7 pm. \nWe are incredibly luck to have as our feature and workshop facilitator\, OSTwelve aka Ronnie Dean Harris \n“Ronnie Dean Harris aka Ostwelve is a multi-disciplined media artist based out of the Fraser Valley in what is known as British Columbia in occupied Coast Salish territories. \nI have been creating art and music for the last 18 years professionally. I got my start in the early Vancouver hip-hop scene and have continued to remain a professional creator since. I’ve acted in television shows\, I’ve traveled to South Africa\, France and Australia to share my music and now work in multimedia capacities collaborating everything from podcasts to stage productions. \nI have been afforded the opportunity to work with some great artists in my midst and get to work with youth around the country. Most recently I have taken on a leadership role in the Vancouver Indigenous Media Arts Festival and am working now on a documentary project while writing and researching for another TV series. \nI have a girlfriend with a cat named Salem and I also have a dog named Bonnie. I am super stoked to be hanging out and sharing some discussion about poetry and showing you some of my work. \nUntil then\, you can hear some of my music and spoken word at my Soundcloud page www.soundcloud.com/ostwelve-productions \nGet out and love someone.” \nTHIS IS A FREE EVENT!

DESCRIPTION:Vancouver poetry house presents feature poet C-Command. C-Command is a spoken word poet\, rapper\, and seeker of flow. He studied theatre performance in Montreal for four years\, until one night he had a lucid dream in which he could freestyle. He left the dream slowly\, and then watched his new powers vanish helplessly as his regular mind woke up… But the experience showed him a deep mystery\, and he vowed to one day figure out the magnetic properties of rhythm and rhyme. He lives in Vancouver now\, writing and experimenting and going for it. \nAs always\, there will be an open mic and two-round poetry slam\, (3 min) where poets accumulate points to qualify for the Van Slam team. \nCafe Deux Soleils and the Van Slam strive to be a trans friendly place and a hate speech free zone. Help us with that. We also acknowledge that this event takes place on unceded First Nations Territory. \nAlso\, be kind to our VOLUNTEER door staff. They have to follow BC Liquor Board Rules and once we are sold out we can’t let anyone in unless someone leaves. You cannot save seats for people in line. Let them know if you are leaving. Also no ATM at the door\, it’s cash ONLY. \nGet there early if you want a seat or want to slam. Before 7pm.

SUMMARY:Dewey Decibel Youth Poetry Slam featuring Dia Davina
DESCRIPTION:Introducing a brand new youth poetry slam at a brand new location with a brand new time. This event will be the perfect place for established youth poets to perform their poems in front of a new audience and for new poets to work up the courage to test out their poems. It is open to all youth poets 13-19 years of age. IT IS A FREE EVENT. \nThis even also includes a workshop with an established poet before the slam to hone your poems or write new ones to perform. \nThe workshop starts at 5:30 and the poetry slam will start before 7pm. We would like to make it a prerequisite you attend the workshop if you are going to compete in the slam. I don’t know how that will work but I’d like to try it. \nThere will be two rounds of competition with a short 3 poem mini feature. \nOur inaugural feature and workshop leader is Dia Wren Davina. \n“A queer\, genderqueer\, feminist\, consent-activist\, Dia is known for their raw\, honest style of outspoken word that is equal parts art and social activism. After finding slam poetry in December 2012\, Dia shimmy-shook their way in deep\, recently winning fourth place in the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam Championships. As a program facilitator\, youth worker and artist\, Dia focuses their energy on cultivating creative\, engaged communities and sparking crucial social dialogue. They feel equally (albeit differently) passionate about intersectionality and bow ties\, and both feature strongly in their poetry and their everyday life. If you give them an open heart and mind\, they will spill their messy guts all over a stage in hopes that you’ll recognize a little piece of yourself in there somewhere. As a white settler\, they currently reside on Unceded Coast Salish Territories (Vancouver).” \nSign up in advance is preferred. Otherwise it will happen just before the workshop. If you take the workshop you don’t have to perform but if you want to perform you need to take the workshop. \nThis event is open to youth poets 13-19 years of age. \nIT IS FREE TO ATTEND

SUMMARY:Elysia Glover features at Youth Slam
DESCRIPTION:This will be the final youth slam of 2014 the show that wraps up our 7th calendar year running the youth slam at Cafe Deux Soleils. Wow\, 7 years. \nWe finish the year in style with another qualifying slam to make the youth slam playoffs in March of 2015. (A note about qualifying…we only have 3 youth slams left before the playoffs. You need to slam AT LEAST TWICE during the season to even qualify for playoffs. So if you’ve been hesitating\, hesitate no longer.) \nIf you are competing you should have at least 2 poems ready to go. You do not have to memorize your poems but sometimes it does help your performance. All poetic styles are welcome. Sign up at 7pm. Show starts at 8 o’clock. Get there early for a good seat. \nWe had 16 people compete last month. That was too many so we will be keeping it at 12 poets maximum in the competition. We do have a poetry open mic as well and a featured performer. \nThis month’s feature is Elysia Glover from Victoria. \n“Elysia Glover is the Co-Director of the Victoria Poetry Project\, a member of the 2014 Vic Slam Team and a casual practitioner of yoga. She likes riding her bike downhill\, dogs and cats who think they’re dogs and telling the hard truth gently. A teacher by training\, she is excited most by spoken word’s ability to connect to young adults and is stoked to be performing at the Vancouver Youth Slam!” \n$4 for 18 and under. $6-$10 for 19 and up. Please be kind to our volunteer door staff who do a great job under sometimes trying circumstances. We fill up to capacity at almost every show and we can’t let anyone else in until someone leaves. We have to follow the fire code. It’s also cash only at the door. \nWe strive to keep Cafe Deux Soleils a trans friendly venue and we acknowledge our events take place on First Nations’ unceded territory.

SUMMARY:Cadillac Invitational Poetry Slam
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver Poetry House presents: Van Slam hosted by 2 Dope Boyz in a Cadillac (aka the infamous Johnny MacRae and shayne avec i grec). Things might get wild. Things might get weird. Things might get you clapping and snapping and laughing so hard you’ll be afraid you’ll have trouble sleeping. But have no fear\, when you get home and lay your head to rest\, recall weekly feature\, Mary Pinkoski’s\, sure to be palpable performance – a recipe for sweeter dreams. \nCurrently the Poet Laureate for the City of Edmonton\, Mary Pinkoski is an award-winning spoken word poet. A storyteller at heart\, her writing has been called dynamic and visceral. Mary has presented her unique style of spoken word throughout Canada in numerous live performances and on radio programs including CBC Radio One’s Radio Active and The Key of A\, and CKUA’s The Road Home. \nIn 2013\, Mary placed third at the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam making her top ranked female in the competition. In 2011 at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word Mary was voted Most Valuable Poet of the festival and won the national championship as member and captain of the Edmonton Poetry Slam Team. Mary was the winner of the 2008 National CBC Poetry Faceoff. \n2 Dope Boys in a Cadillac are preachers of The Anthropocalypse in the guise of barefoot beards with voices. In order to further the good word of bad things they have spent the four years restlessly wandering North America with their words while simultaneously creating the world’s first psychedelic talk opera. They share nightmares but live the dream. They were also six fifteenths of the 2013 Vic Slam Team. \nThis is an INVITATIONAL SLAM where competing poets are selected by organizers in advance – which means you’re guaranteed some funky poet performances. Conventional rules don’t apply\, rumor has it 2 Dope Boyz allow musical accompaniment and offer water-bowling (yes\, water-bowling). \nCafe Deux Soleils and the Van Slam strive to be a trans friendly place and a hate speech free zone. SUMMARY:Sabrina Benhaim features at Van Slam
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver poetry house presents\, feature poet Sabrina Benaim who brings with her her poetry – the perfect tickle to inspire a more dreamy December. Much akin to butterfly kisses and feathers on cheeks\, Sabrina’s performance will infuse you with a subtle warmth that will most certainly provoke a series of spontaneous smiles. \n“At birth we are placed into a stream of holy water we dare not cup our palms to hold. We call the water time. Our bodies are built electric ivory lighthouses for our surviving souls\, our shadows allude to the haunting deja vu\, we have been before\, everything that will be has been before\, once at least\, but probably more.” – The See You Soon Theory \nIt might not seem like it but Sabrina was once afraid of her voice. It wasn’t until she found poetry that the roaring lion nestling in her throat began to speak. Most recently Sabrina was part of the 2014 Toronto Poetry Slam team which was crowned national champions this past October in Victoria\, BC. Sabrina’s poems float along the spectrum of love\, pain\, identity and Beyonce. These days\, she wears her voice on her sleeve and hopes to share it with as many people as humanly possible. \nAs always\, there will be an open mic and two-round poetry slam\, (3 min) where poets accumulate points to qualify for the Van Slam team. \nCafe Deux Soleils and the Van Slam strive to be a trans friendly place and a hate speech free zone. DESCRIPTION:Vancouver Poetry House presents: Van Slam with weekly feature poet\, Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz who is blowing into this city like the warm breeze we’ve all been waiting for. Fall is in full force and Cristin’s down-to- earth delivery and tangible tales of family\, love and life will wrap around you like the blankets in your bed that has been so hard to leave as of late.“My body was a house I had closed for the winter\, it shouldn’t have been that difficult\, empty as it was. SUMMARY:Jason Philosofly features at Van Slam
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver poetry house presents\, weekly feature poet\, Jason Philosofly who serves his poetry with a side of rap and dash of funk. If you’ve been wanting to add some rhythm and rhyme to your Monday\, show up\, be shaken. \n“If this is a free country\, why is everything private property? Why does everything feel like a game of monopoly? Why do our lives revolve around the economy?” \nPhilosofly is a spoken word artist with a wonderfully weird hip-hop approach to poetry. A member of the 2013 Canadian Festival of Spoken Word Championship team (Toronto Poetry Slam)\, and winner of 2014 Last Poet Standing\, Philosofly has made quite an impact in his short time in the scene. The rapper slash poet is known for his catchy rhythmic delivery and random ass metaphors that somehow end up making sense by the end of the poem. Can we make a poem that compares American Imperialism to Pokemon? Yes We Can! \nSome of Philosofly’s music and spoken word performances can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/user/thespursareadynasty  \nAs always\, there will be an open mic and two-round poetry slam\, (3 min) where poets accumulate points to qualify for the Van Slam team. SUMMARY:FLOYD VB FEATURES AT VAN SLAM
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver Poetry House presents: Van Slam with weekly feature poet\, Floyd VB. If you’ve ever questioned the meaning of life in all it’s complexity and simplicity and how something could be both at the same time – come on down\, you’ll be in good company. Using the definition of literary as both king and court jester\, Floyd dazzles and delights turning even the unsightly parts of existence into something we can laugh about. \n“I know what I’m saying is as nonsensical as the fact that nonsensical is a word and sensical is not. But I think the message is getting through. I hope you understand – It’s trekking through the streets of god\, jizz\, piss and poo\, trying desperately just to grab the lobes of your ears to hold on to. What I’m trying to say is that I am a Weirdo\, and this weirdo loves another this weirdo\, loves you” – Weirdos \nFloyd VB is a queer spoken word artist who enjoys long walks through their own imagination and the streets of their hometown of Vancouver BC. Their strolling has taken them far and wide\, including into the company of the 2013 Vancouver Poetry Slam team and the 2012 and 2013 Vancouver Youth Slam teams. At National Poetry Slam in Boston\, Floyd won the annual Nerd Slam. They also participated in the Victoria Spoken Word Festival this year. Floyd excitedly swan-dives into absurdity with flailing limbs as they tell you about the complexities of gender identity\, love\, and their eclectic\, deepest\, darkest obsessions. They leave you feeling like a sketchbook dripping ink. They will doodle obscenities on your inner eye. Floyd will rock your socks! \nAs always\, there will be an open mic and two-round poetry slam\, (3 min) where poets accumulate points to qualify for the Van Slam team. \nCafe Deux Soleils and the Van Slam strive to be a trans friendly place and a hate speech free zone. Supported by the love of his grandmother\, he finds courage through his vivid imagination\, but that courage mutates\, expressing itself with the violence that he himself has endured. Scarred and wary\, he survives to face an uncertain future. \nBravely autobiographical\, beautifully poetic\, visually innovative and musically memorable\, Stickboy confronts the uncomfortable reality of a society struggling with its own fear and insecurity\, a society that seeks conformity and uniformity at the expense of those who are different. \nStickboy debuts at the Vancouver Playhouse the night after this show\, October 23rd. For more info\, check out Vancouver Opera’s show page. \nFeatured image illustration by Olimpia Zagnoli. YAP Artist Photo by Caren Tereschak \nSee the event on facebook. \nAdvance tickets closed.
