SUMMARY:Greg Bee features at Van Slam
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver poetry house presents feature poet\, Greg Bee. Greg is a writer\, actor and poet who lives in Seattle. He has written and performed poetry at Poetry Slams across North America for more than 10 years\, has written a couple of plays and acted in a few plays as well. He wants you to know that he was a fantasy nerd before it was trendy; that he remembers when kale was a for decoration\, not for eating; and that riding a bright yellow Harley Davidson isn’t weird. \nThere will be an open mic and three-round poetry slam: 2 min\, 1 minute and 4 minute rounds where poets accumulate points to qualify for the Vancouver Individual Poetry Slam championships. \nCafe Deux Soleils and the Van Slam strive to be a trans friendly place and a hate speech free zone. Help us with that. We also acknowledge that this event takes place on unceded First Nations Territory. \nAlso\, be kind to our VOLUNTEER door staff. They have to follow BC Liquor Board Rules and once we are sold out we can’t let anyone in unless someone leaves. You cannot save seats for people in line. Let them know if you are leaving. Also no ATM at the door\, it’s cash ONLY. \nGet there early if you want a seat or want to slam. Before 7pm.

SUMMARY:Chicken Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Chicken Sessions\, inspired by Mike McGee’s Kitchen Sessions\, and the local Under the Bed series run by RC Weslowski and Wilhelmina Salmi\, is a house concert\, a poetry and story performance space\, a potluck\, a party\, a salon with some Louisiana hospitality tossed together and served up by host and instigator Pamela Bentley in a big\, beautiful East Van heritage house. A poet and musician invited in advance cap the event\, with debut work in 12 open mic spots beforehand. Chicken Session #14 is a Sunday afternoon backyard brunch with poet Robert Lashley\, and musicians Chicken-like Birds\, and is the final event of Verses Festival of Words 2015. \n$5 suggested donation. No one turned away for lack of funds. \nPlease note: the program lists this show as starting at 3pm. That is incorrect. The start time for this show is 1pm. \nAccessibility Info (provided by The Coop residents\, not an accessibility expert): \nThe Coop is an old house with no accessibility modifications. There is a dirt driveway up to a large wide gate. The backyard is mostly grass with some gravel on path. If there has been little rain to make the ground soft\, this is navigable by wheelchair and scooter. There is one small drop down from the side yard to the back. There is a bathroom on the ground floor level through two regular size doors with a one step drop down into the unit. If it rains\, we will be on the main floor which is up a dozen stairs at front of the house or from backyard. Inside\, everything on the same level. The bathroom is probably big enough to be wheelchair accessible.

SUMMARY:Live Performance Masterclass with Ivan Coyote
DESCRIPTION:Ivan Coyote leads a workshop designed to help you transform your nervous energy into a memorable reading. Learn how to select material\, prepare your work for performance\, memorize it (or not)\, and make your body language work for you. \nIvan will also share secrets about microphones\, sound guys\, and selling your books. \n\nParticipants must bring a 3 minute selection of their work to be staged.\nAges 16 and up.\n\nBuy tickets for Live Performance Masterclass with Ivan Coyote \nIvan Coyote is the award-winning author of ten books\, the creator of four short films\, and has released three CDs that combine storytelling with music. Ivan is a seasoned stage performer and long-time road dog\, and over the last eighteen years has become an audience favourite at storytelling\, writer’s\, film\, poetry\, and folk music festivals from Anchorage to Amsterdam. \nThe Globe and Mail newspaper called Coyote “a natural-born storyteller” and the Ottawa Xpress once said that “Coyote is to Canadian literature what kd lang is to country music: a beautifully odd fixture.” \nIvan often grapples with the complex and intensely personal issues of gender identity in their work\, as well as topics such as family\, class\, social justice and queer liberation\, but always with a generous heart\, a quick wit\, and the nuanced and finely-honed timing of a gifted raconteur. Ivan’s stories remind of us of our own fallible and imperfect humanity while at the same time inspiring us to change the world. \nOnly a maximum of 30 registrations are available for this exclusive workshop experience. Box office and Will Call will open with doors at 2:30pm. Box office is CASH ONLY. There is an ATM located in the building. \nThis show may contain strong language\, controversial issues\, and words that make you re-evaluate your life. SUMMARY:Talk the Talk: Accessibility
DESCRIPTION:This community-driven\, facilitator-mediated conversation asks artists to participate in anti-oppression dialogue around the topic of “Accessibility within the Spoken-Word Community.” The traditional definition of accessibility has been rapidly expanding in attempt to build our communities in the most inclusive manner possible. This is an opportunity to add your voice to this very important conversation. Ask questions\, share your ideas; this is not a lecture! The scene that we deserve is the one that we help to create. Come out\, participate\, and help shape the future of the spoken word community for the better. \nThis discussion is a free event. Seating cannot be reserved in advance. \nAccessibility Info: \nHavana Theatre is an accessible venue. To reach the theatre\, you must pass through the restaurant to the gallery space. On the right\, is a black door leading into the theatre. There is a narrow hallway and two doors to access the performance space\, but no stairs. \nAn American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter will be interpreting the presentation for the audience.

SUMMARY:Tomboy Survival Guide
DESCRIPTION:Tomboy Survival Guide is part anthem\, part campfire story\, and part instructions for the dismantling of the gender stories we tell ourselves and each other. Writer and storyteller Ivan Coyote and an all-tomboy band invite the audience to join them as they navigate the narrow halls of public washrooms\, skirt the treachery of growing up under the threat of being picked to be a flower girl at their aunt’s wedding\, triumph over tying a double Windsor knot\, and discover the beauty in realizing they were handsome\, not pretty\, all along. \nBuy tickets for Tomboy Survival Guide \nTomboy Survival Guide is the music and story-driven collaboration of award winning writer and storyteller Ivan Coyote\, the hummingbird high-energied drummer and percussionist Sally Zori\, the mellifluous basslines of Pebbles Willekes\, and the subtle and graceful tinkerings of trumpet player Alison Gorman. These four fast friends and fellow tomboys have been locking themselves in a small dim room once a week all winter to craft this world premier of their full-length show. Blending story\, lyric\, music\, soundscape\, memory and maybe even the odd elementary-school photograph\, Tomboy Survival Guide is a live stage experience that defies gender and genre boxes with the same compassionate defiance and fearless and tender truth-telling that Ivan Coyote has been bringing to their work for nearly two decades of publishing and performing. \nSpecial guest performers include Veda Hille & Kinnie Starr. \nFollow the Tomboy Survival Guide project on twitter or facebook or youtube. \n[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9gRHAtGL9w?rel=0] \nDoors open at 7pm. If you’ve ever seen a ‘workshop stage’ at a folk festival\, you’ll know how exciting it is to see artists perform in this more relaxed and informal atmosphere where anything can happen. \nFrom Word Circus founder\, Justin McGrail: \nThe Word Circus began in Montreal in 1994 as a series of live performances by Fluffy Pagan Echoes\, the spoken word quintet featuring Scott Duncan\, Ran Elfassy\, Justin McGrail\, Victoria Stanton\, and Vince Tinguely. It broke away from the then standard poetry-reading format by incorporating group pieces\, memorized text\, and having the poets present in four thematic rounds. We also sat together on stage for the show\, which made alternating at the mike easier\, and made us really listen to each other’s performance. \nMoving to Vancouver in 1995\, I adapted the show format to a monthly series at the then just opened Whip Café Gallery on East 6th.  Each month\, three different local poets would be featured in a show that combined themes\, music\, and audience participation – in posters and event-listings audience members were encouraged to bring poetry. On stage were four chairs\, three of which would be occupied by our featured poets.  I would announce the theme of each round\, and ask the audience if anyone had brought a poem that worked with it. One poet from the audience would be invited onstage to join the trio\, and then we’d have four poems on one theme. Additionally\, the show featured DJ’s (mainly acid-jazz and house) who would live mix in music with each poem. The result was a groovy\, unpredictable\, fun show\, that ran for 14 months\, and included performances by Tim Lander\, David Campbell\, Alexandra Oliver\, Kedrick James\, Andrew Lithgow\, John Sobol\, Rick Keating\, Andrea Thompson\, Davy Bouvier\, Ralph Alfonso\, Sheri-D Wilson and many more. \nThe last Word Circus was in the summer of 1998\, which I hosted and performed in for the CBC on the Plaza\, with poets Diane Laloge\, Graham Olds\, SR Duncan\, and Ed Varney\, with music supplied by Jim Good. \nOne tradition maintained in Montreal and Vancouver was that the theme of the third round is always love — ’cause\, everyone’s got at least one poem about love! \nThis show is All Ages. General seating. Box office and Will Call will open with doors at 2:30pm. Box office is CASH ONLY. There is an ATM located in the building. \nThis show may contain strong language\, controversial issues\, and words that make you re-evaluate your life. Advance tickets are NOT mailed out they can be picked up at the Will Call station at the venue. Box office and Will Call will open with doors at 2:30pm. Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferrable. \n Brown Paper Tickets Ticket Widget Loading…Click Here to visit the Brown Paper Tickets event page. \nAccessibility Info: \nHavana Theatre is an accessible venue. To reach the theatre\, you must pass through the restaurant to the gallery space. On the right\, is a black door leading into the theatre. There is a narrow hallway and two doors to access the performance space\, but no stairs.
