SUMMARY:Word Circus
DESCRIPTION:A whirlwind of words occurs as Ian Ferrier\, David McGimpsey\, Tanya Evanson\, Robert Priest\, and Barbara Adler blur the line between stage and page. \nBuy tickets for Word Circus \nThe round robin format allows the artists to respond to one another and build the energy in a spontaneous way. If you’ve ever seen a ‘workshop stage’ at a folk festival\, you’ll know how exciting it is to see artists perform in this more relaxed and informal atmosphere where anything can happen. \nFrom Word Circus founder\, Justin McGrail: \nThe Word Circus began in Montreal in 1994 as a series of live performances by Fluffy Pagan Echoes\, the spoken word quintet featuring Scott Duncan\, Ran Elfassy\, Justin McGrail\, Victoria Stanton\, and Vince Tinguely. It broke away from the then standard poetry-reading format by incorporating group pieces\, memorized text\, and having the poets present in four thematic rounds. We also sat together on stage for the show\, which made alternating at the mike easier\, and made us really listen to each other’s performance. \nMoving to Vancouver in 1995\, I adapted the show format to a monthly series at the then just opened Whip Café Gallery on East 6th.  Each month\, three different local poets would be featured in a show that combined themes\, music\, and audience participation – in posters and event-listings audience members were encouraged to bring poetry. On stage were four chairs\, three of which would be occupied by our featured poets.  I would announce the theme of each round\, and ask the audience if anyone had brought a poem that worked with it. One poet from the audience would be invited onstage to join the trio\, and then we’d have four poems on one theme. Additionally\, the show featured DJ’s (mainly acid-jazz and house) who would live mix in music with each poem. The result was a groovy\, unpredictable\, fun show\, that ran for 14 months\, and included performances by Tim Lander\, David Campbell\, Alexandra Oliver\, Kedrick James\, Andrew Lithgow\, John Sobol\, Rick Keating\, Andrea Thompson\, Davy Bouvier\, Ralph Alfonso\, Sheri-D Wilson and many more. \nThe last Word Circus was in the summer of 1998\, which I hosted and performed in for the CBC on the Plaza\, with poets Diane Laloge\, Graham Olds\, SR Duncan\, and Ed Varney\, with music supplied by Jim Good. \nOne tradition maintained in Montreal and Vancouver was that the theme of the third round is always love — ’cause\, everyone’s got at least one poem about love! \nThis show is All Ages. General seating. Box office and Will Call will open with doors at 2:30pm. Box office is CASH ONLY. There is an ATM located in the building. \nThis show may contain strong language\, controversial issues\, and words that make you re-evaluate your life. Advance tickets are NOT mailed out they can be picked up at the Will Call station at the venue. Box office and Will Call will open with doors at 2:30pm. Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferrable. \n Brown Paper Tickets Ticket Widget Loading…Click Here to visit the Brown Paper Tickets event page. \nAccessibility Info: \nHavana Theatre is an accessible venue. To reach the theatre\, you must pass through the restaurant to the gallery space. On the right\, is a black door leading into the theatre. There is a narrow hallway and two doors to access the performance space\, but no stairs.

You sign-up for the whole three-hour session\, during which you’ll circulate through a series of games\, lessons\, and exercises that will help you expand your poetic range and learn a whole lot more about how wide and varied the territory of poetryland is.\nOur feature poets\, Lucia Misch and Morgan Purvis\, will be leading workshop stations at this event\, along with veteran versifiers from our WordPlay Poetry-in-Schools team.\nThis is event is open to all BC Youth aged 14–19 free of charge. SUMMARY:Hullabaloo Underground Indies
DESCRIPTION:Underground Indies is the chance for individual slammers to show the breadth and depth of their poetic skills. After day one of prelims on Friday April 24th\, we’ll take the poetry off the stage and put it into a different format. The audience will be arranged in a circle around the performance area. There will be no stage and no microphone. Instead 16 poets will compete in a head-to-head format to determine the best slam poet at Hullabaloo.\nAlice MacKay Room (downstairs from the main concourse).\n Starts after Day One Team Bouts\, around 10:30pm.\nEnds around midnight.\nRules:\n\nEach school can nominate one poet to represent them at Underground Indies. This might be the winner of your school slam or your team captain. The selection process is up to the school or organization. If we have less than 16 reps\, then we will have an open sign-up directly proceeding the competition to bring the number of slammers up to 16.\nThere are no judges\, or rather\, everyone is a judge. 16 poets are randomly chosen into 8 pairings. In each pairing\, the two poets play rock/paper/scissors to determine who goes first. After both poets have performed\, the winner is determined by audience applause.\nTo go all the way and complete the final match at Underground Indies\, a poet will need four poems.\nThe time limit of 3 minutes and 10 seconds is still in effect. If a poet goes over time\, the host will enter the circle and interrupt their poem.\nAs in previous Indies Finals\, the final round has no rules. It is the Anarchy Round. You can have multiple people\, music\, props\, costumes\, whatever you like. However\, unlike previous years\, breaking the rules is no longer a requirement of the Anarchy Round. And yes\, the time penalty is still in effect in the Anarchy Round. That is one rule you can’t break.\nAccessibility info\nThe VPL Central Branch has elevators to reach the downstairs rooms where the Hullabaloo events are being held. There are wheelchair accessible bathrooms. For more details\, refer to their list of facilities.

SUMMARY:All-Star Slam
DESCRIPTION:Are your students finding poetry boring? Unexciting? An archaic form practiced by old people obsessed with nature? Try All-Star Slam. It brings the poignancy\, hilarity\, and immediacy of slam poetry competitions to the stage. The All-Star Slam pits three former poetry slam champions head to head to head in an all-out battle of poetic verve and wit.\nBuy tickets for All-Star Slam\nHow does it work? Simple. The poets perform one poem each in three rounds\, all of which are judged on a scale of zero to ten by the audience — in this case\, the students! In the end\, the winner is announced\, though in effect\, everyone has won. Students have been moved\, inspired\, and engaged by poetry\, often for the first time in their lives.\nAs one student had it: “This is better than Metallica!” The topics are engaging\, the presentation is amazing\, and the competition is riveting. Guaranteed to jumpstart students into writing careers of their own.\nHosted by 2005 Slam Champion and All-Star founder\, Brendan McLeod (pictured in video below).\nTo bring a school group to this show\, contact Johnny MacRae through wordplaypoets@gmail.com.\nDoors at noon.\n Show starts at 12:30pm.\n Show ends at 2pm.\nWant to see it in action?
