SUMMARY:The Anarchy Slam
DESCRIPTION:Art is best with rules. That’s a rule. \nPoetry Slams have lots of rules\, that’s what makes them great art. Some people seem to disagree with this clearly factual scientific based rule fact so we’re tossing it all out the window! It’s going to be anarchy I tell you! Anarchy! Once you set foot on that stage there are no rules! \nThat’s right! It’s an anarchy slam. So where there used to be a rules such as: \nNo Props\nNo Costumes\nNo Musical Accompaniment\nNo Animal Acts\nNo Nudity\nWork must be original\nNo Team Poems \nNOW WE’VE JUST REPLACED THOSE RULES AND ENCOURAGE: \nBring Props\nWear Costumes\nUse some Musical accompaniment (Please\, Please\, Please\, someone have a theremin)\nTrained Animal Acts!! ( They can be untrained but let’s be safe here\, people. Don’t cover yourself in meat to lure a cougar from North Van onto the Seabus then onto the skytrain then finally onto the stage just cause you couldn’t be bothered to ask Facebook if there was a cat to borrow. It’s Vancouver; someone has a cat. We all have cats.)\nNo Nudity (probably still a good guideline but that’s all it can be this time)\nPerform someone elses work!\nDo a group Poem.\nDo All of the above!!\nHave a question? Why? Stop that. The answer is do it\, there’s no rules anymore. \nDoors and up at 7pm. $6-$10 Sliding scale. Show at 8 o’clock. Who knows how long it will go for. \nWe acknowledge this event is taking place on unceded Coast Salish Territory. We also strive to be a trans friendly venue. Please be kind to our volunteer door staff. They are simply enforcing fire code rules when allowing people into the venue. CASH ONLY at the door.

SUMMARY:Mona Mousa features at the Van Slam
DESCRIPTION:The Vancouver poetry house presents feature poet\, Mona Mousa. \nInspired by several Canadian and American slam poets\, Mona found herself in an addictive relationship with the written and spoken word. At 17 she hit the stage for the first time at Toronto’s well-known annual Open Minds Respect events. 9 year later Mona has been on the road almost non stop\, Having recently come off her 2015 Summer tour schedule to the southern US\, and Hawaii. \nOver the past 9 years Mona’s mission has been to work to empower young adults engaging them in discussion. The mission is about promoting real love\, love as an action that we commit to unconditionally. This love is about safe spaces no matter your religion\, social class\, gender or sexual orientation. The mission is education & tolerance\, no exceptions. It’s about a queer posi and body posi state of mind. The mission is mental health awareness\, and letting people or yourself know that rescue is possible\, that your story is important . It’s helping you turn your scars into stories. \nIn many reviews written about this young lady\, one thing is quite evident\, her charm and passion drive her and she is ready to take Canada by storm\, as one of Manitoba’s most promising\, up and coming performance poets. \nAs always\, there will be an open mic and two-round poetry slam\, (3 min) where poets accumulate points to qualify for the Van Slam team. \nCafe Deux Soleils and the Van Slam strive to be a trans friendly place and a hate speech free zone. Help us with that. We also acknowledge that this event takes place on unceded First Nations Territory. \nAlso\, be kind to our VOLUNTEER door staff. They have to follow BC Liquor Board Rules and once we are sold out we can’t let anyone in unless someone leaves. You cannot save seats for people in line. Let them know if you are leaving. Also no ATM at the door\, it’s cash ONLY. \nGet there early if you want a seat or want to slam

SUMMARY:Rachel Rosenberg features at the Van Slam
DESCRIPTION:The Vancouver poetry house presents feature poet\, Rachel Rosenberg. \nThe Truth: \nRachel Rosenberg is a 27-year-old lawyer/recent graduate of Lewis & Clark Law School and an alumnus of Kenyon College. She has been writing poetry for 19 years and performing it for the last three. Her poems have been published in a number of online and print journals\, most recently in The Leaning House Press and The Sparrow Ghost Collective Anthology of Poetry: Vol.’s 1 and 2. Her love of words is intriguingly electrifying. \nThe Fun: \nRachel Rosenberg is a superhero; mild mannered lawyer by day\, kickass poet by night. She swoops down onto stages throwing words of razor sharp wit\, screaming her battle cry of “more pretzels\, please!” Her utility belt is full of funny\, sexy\, and awkward-y. Meet Rachel Rosenberg; meet…Poetic Justice! \nAs always\, there will be an open mic and two-round poetry slam\, (3 min) where poets accumulate points to qualify for the Van Slam team. \nCafe Deux Soleils and the Van Slam strive to be a trans friendly place and a hate speech free zone. SUMMARY:Andre Prefontaine features at the Van Slam
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver poetry house presents feature poet\, Andre Prefontaine. \nAndre Prefontaine is a prairie boy living in the big city that hitchhiked from Calgary to Toronto with nothing but a dream\, a backpack and a head full of possibilities. A quintessential childless dad-joke machine\, he’s been knighted as a tragicomic force of nature known as “Hurricane Sassy.” \nHe is a slam veteran with many accomplishments under his belt. Most notably the two-time consecutive win at the Canadian Underground Poetry Slam Champion (2012-2013) and the first place victory at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word with the Toronto Poetry Slam team in 2014. As an ugly duckling growing up\, Andre has learned to funnel caustic wit into imagery and metaphors that never fail. Published in North America’s queer anthology “Flicker and Sparkle” his life experiences propel him to connect to the disenfranchised for reasons no better stated than “it takes one to know one.” \nHis performances are piñatas of high energy\, bursting laughs throughout the room and seasoned with tear jerkering vulnerability. Brace yourselves for one heck of a wild ride\, for Hurricane Sassy comes this way. \nGet there early if you want a seat or want to slam. Before 7pm.

SUMMARY:Youth Poetry Slam featuring Joshua "Scribe" Watkis
DESCRIPTION:Our new youth slam season is underway and poets are hitting the stage and torching the mic with their words trying to make it into the Youth Team Playoffs next March. \nThe age limit to compete is 13-20 years of age. His sharp lyricism and bold presence give his audience a clear picture of the world through his eyes when he takes the stage. The young Toronto artist is one third of the Spoken Word collective ‘The Uncharted’\, a budding Arts Educator/Youth Mentor and is probably known best for his fascinating ability to burst into full song without any kind of warning. Reminiscent of his influences Kendrick Lamar and Lecrae\, Scribe always leaves the place with more energy than when he stepped in. ” \nSign up at 7pm.
