SUMMARY:Hullabaloo's 2016 All-Star Slam
DESCRIPTION:Are your students finding poetry boring? Unexciting? An archaic form practiced by old people obsessed with nature imagery? Try the All-Star Slam. It brings the poignancy\, hilarity\, and immediacy of slam poetry competitions to the stage. The All-Star Slam pits three poetic champions head to head to head in an all-out battle of poetic verve and wit. 2016’s All Stars will be Hullabaloo Poet of Honour Janet Rogers\, Toronto’s Lishai Peel\, and Kingston’s Winona Linn.  Hosted by 2010 Vancouver Poetry Slam Champion and Hullabaloo co-director\, Johnny MacRae. \nHow does it work? Simple. The poets perform one poem each in three rounds\, all of which are judged on a scale of zero to ten by the audience — in this case\, the students! In the end\, the winner is announced\, though in effect\, everyone has won. Students have been moved\, inspired\, and engaged by poetry\, often for the first time in their lives. \nThe topics are engaging\, the presentation is amazing\, and the competition is riveting. Guaranteed to jumpstart students into writing careers of their own. \nTo bring a school group to this show\, contact Johnny MacRae through wordplaypoets@gmail.com. \nDoors at noon.\n Show starts at 12:30pm.\n Show ends at 2pm. \nWant to see it in action? Voila: \n\nAccessibility: \nRead the updated overview of The Rio Theatre (completed in February 2015) or the complete updated audit for detailed accessibility information. These documents are available thanks to the important work of the Radical Access Mapping Project.

Her dynamic personality is reflected in her performance\, as she frequently has her audience in a fit of laughter one moment with smart wordplay and comedy and close to tears the next as she quietly delivers solemn confessions. Linn has performed her poetry in numerous venues across Canada\, Europe\, and the United States\, winning slams and featuring at a variety of events. \nThe 8 poets competing tonight will be\n(in no particular order):\nSonder\nAndrew Warner\nBrandon Zhu\nEmily Kelsall\nEverett Montinola\nJulia Pileggi\nCoral More\nMartina Danserau \nThere will be two 3 minute rounds and all poets will compete in BOTH rounds. \nAs always\, there will be an open mic and two-round poetry slam\, (3 min) where poets accumulate points to qualify for the Van Slam team. \nCafe Deux Soleils and the Van Slam strive to be a trans friendly place and a hate speech free zone. Help us with that. We also acknowledge that this event takes place on unceded First Nations Territory. \nAlso\, be kind to our VOLUNTEER door staff. They have to follow BC Liquor Board Rules and once we are sold out we can’t let anyone in unless someone leaves. You cannot save seats for people in line. Let them know if you are leaving. Also no ATM at the door\, it’s cash ONLY. \nGet there early if you want a seat or want to slam. Before 7pm

SUMMARY:Dewey Decibel Youth Slam and FREE Workshop with DANA ID MATTHEWS
DESCRIPTION:Time for another FREE workshop and “poetry slam” at the Vancouver Public Library. Usually the DDYS happens on the 1st Wednesday of the month but due to a scheduling conflict we will be taking place on the 2nd Wednesday which is February 10th. We will be on the lower level in the Peter Kaye room. The workshop starts at 5:30 and is open to poets 13-20 years of age as is the “poetry slam.” \nThis month we will have a guest host: Jillian Christmas as I will be away. \nWe are excited to have as our workshop leader and mini feature–Dana ID Matthews \nWorkshop Description: My focus is on developing a style you can call your own\, whilst still providing you with fundamental rhyming techniques and a few of my own. \n1. 2-5 games focused on rhyme and rhythm techniques \n2. 1-3 Games designed around personification \n3. 2-5 Writing excessive designed to train your brain to ”think deeper” \n4. 1-3 Writing exercises around continuing to write even when you think it’s ”bad” and overall honesty to yourself in poetry \n“Dana\, a Haitian born poet & MC\, was adopted and raised in Timmins/London\, Ontario. Now an independent Vancouver based artist\, Dana has a voice that naturally commands the attention of anyone in the room. His diverse lyricism springs from his unique upbringing & extensive spoken word poetry background. Dana’s first memories of writing were in form of French short stories\, as he was raised bi-lingual. He first got into Hip-Hop music after being introduced to it at 13 years of age. \nSince then\, Dana has made a multitude of collaboration music with people all over the world through the help of social media. Notably\, his professional Hip-Hop mixtape\, “Hippies & Aliens”\, released in 2014 under a small label to glowing audience response. Currently\, Dana has released an independent mixtape called ” Piece of Pie”\, and is working on expanding his resume\, focusing on building his own brand that surrounds his recording\, engineering\, & editing skills.” \nAGAIN THIS IS A FREE EVENT. \nWe also acknowledge that this will be taking place on unceded Coast Salish Territory. The venue is wheelchair accessible and you can take an elevator to the lower level where the workshop is taking place if you need to.
