SUMMARY:Crackerjack Lipsmacker Youth Poetry Slam #98 featuring Mariah Dear
DESCRIPTION:This will be your second to last chance to qualify for the youth slam playoffs in March. This is especially important because to qualify you must slam/compete at least twice during the season. That means if you have not competed yet but are interested in going out for the team then you need to compete in January and February and hopefully earn enough points to do so. \nThis event is open to poets who are between 13-20 years of age. Another stipulation for making the team is you cannot turn 21 years of age BEFORE Sept 1st\, 2016. \nAs well as the poetry slam we will have a feautre performance from our 2015 youth slam GRAND SLAM CHAMPION\, Mariah Dear \n“Mariah Dear began writing poetry as a child and in 2013 she began to actively compete in slam poetry competitions. She earned a spot as a member of the 2013 Vancouver Youth Slam Poetry Team which placed 4th in the country at YouthCanSlam\, Canada’s national youth slam poetry competition. She was a member of the team again in 2014 when the Vancouver Youth Slam Poetry Team placed 1st in the nation. In addition to this she was crowned UBC’s Grand Slam Champion in 2014 and had the honour of representing UBC at the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam (CIPS) where she placed 19th in the country. In 2015 she was crowned Vancouver’s Youth Grand Slam Champion and took on a leadership role with UBC Slam Poetry\, where she continues to organize and facilitate biweekly poetry workshops for people of all ages and experiences.” \nYou should prepare at least two 3 minute length poems for the competition (if you make the 2nd round.) No props or costumes or musical accompaniment allowed in your performance. You must also have written the work you perform. \n$4 for 18 and under. $6-$10 for 19 and up. \nWe acknowlege this event takes place on unceded Coast Salish Territory. We also strive to have our events be trans friendly spaces. Cafe Deux Soleils has single stall non gendered washrooms. We also strive to be wheelchair and mobility impaired accessible. \nBe nice to our door staff. They are volunteers and are working with the venues fire cood restrictions. CASH ONLY at the door. \nrcarcee2@gmail.com for more info. \nBe weird\, be brave\, be yourself.

SUMMARY:Dewey Decibel Youth Poetry Workshop and Poetry Slam featuring Johnny MacRae
DESCRIPTION:Start the new year off with a poetry workshop and youth poetry slam featuring the wonderful Johnny MacRae. \nThis is a FREE event at the downtown branch of the Vancouver Public Library. We have a 1 hour writing workshop from 5:30-6:30 where poets create new work to be followed by an open mic/poetry slam. It’s open to poets 13-20 years of age. It’s a lot of fun and FREE. \nThere will also be a 3 poem mini feature by our workshop leader. \nJohnny MacRae is a mouthy poet. The 2013 Poet of Honour for the Victoria Spoken Word Festival\, he has been a regional and a national poetry slam champion. Since 2010\, MacRae has regularly toured across Canada and the United States\, both solo and as a member of psychedelic spoken word duo\, 2 Dope Boys in a Cadillac. \nWorkshop Description: “Lying to Tell the Truth” \nStarting from the premise that creative expression can never be “the honest truth\,” this workshop examines the creative possibilities of using fictional frameworks as a way to express personal truths. In particular\, this workshop focuses on channeling the personal urgency of speaking from the heart into extended metaphor\, as a means of making your poems for effective vehicles for what you want to say\, while expanding opportunities for random members of your audience to engage with your work.

SUMMARY:The Anarchy Slam
DESCRIPTION:Art is best with rules. That’s a rule. \nPoetry Slams have lots of rules\, that’s what makes them great art. Some people seem to disagree with this clearly factual scientific based rule fact so we’re tossing it all out the window! It’s going to be anarchy I tell you! Anarchy! Once you set foot on that stage there are no rules! \nThat’s right! It’s an anarchy slam. So where there used to be a rules such as: \nNo Props\nNo Costumes\nNo Musical Accompaniment\nNo Animal Acts\nNo Nudity\nWork must be original\nNo Team Poems \nNOW WE’VE JUST REPLACED THOSE RULES AND ENCOURAGE: \nBring Props\nWear Costumes\nUse some Musical accompaniment (Please\, Please\, Please\, someone have a theremin)\nTrained Animal Acts!! ( They can be untrained but let’s be safe here\, people. Don’t cover yourself in meat to lure a cougar from North Van onto the Seabus then onto the skytrain then finally onto the stage just cause you couldn’t be bothered to ask Facebook if there was a cat to borrow. It’s Vancouver; someone has a cat. We all have cats.)\nNo Nudity (probably still a good guideline but that’s all it can be this time)\nPerform someone elses work!\nDo a group Poem.\nDo All of the above!!\nHave a question? Why? Stop that. The answer is do it\, there’s no rules anymore. \nDoors and up at 7pm. $6-$10 Sliding scale. Show at 8 o’clock. Who knows how long it will go for. \nWe acknowledge this event is taking place on unceded Coast Salish Territory. We also strive to be a trans friendly venue. Please be kind to our volunteer door staff. They are simply enforcing fire code rules when allowing people into the venue. CASH ONLY at the door.
