SUMMARY:Ian Keteku Masterclass
DESCRIPTION:Your Poem is Lasagna\, Layered.\nJoin ‎2010 World Poetry Slam champion Ian Keteku as he explores the layers beneath a poem and performance. Many times performance poets unintentionally come across as preachy\, ranting\, angry.\n\nHow do we get our “message” to be effectively communicated? How do we intentionally dig beneath the layers to find the truth of our story?\n\nKeteku has coached two championship teams ‎and assisted countless others in finding the deeper and layered truth behind the issues and topics poets choose to write about.\n\nSearching for the actual truth\, not the truth we hope is true or think should be true helps us communicate better\, opens up doors for creativity and in a slam context equates to higher scores.\n\nParticipants are asked to bring writing utensils and concepts for poems they hope to write one day. Do not come in with poems you are unwilling to have changed.\n\nThis event is all ages. \nTickets are available via Brown Paper Tickets. Masterclass entry is not included in Festival Pass. \n\n\n\n\nhttp://ianketekumasterclass.brownpapertickets.com\n\n\n\nAccessibility Info: \nHavana Theatre is an accessible venue. To reach the theatre\, you must pass through the restaurant to the gallery space. On the right\, is a black door leading into the theatre. There is a narrow hallway and two doors to access the performance space\, but no stairs. The hallway to the washrooms is very narrow\, accessible for wheelchairs\, possibly tight for scooters.

SUMMARY:RC Weslowski Masterclass
DESCRIPTION:Free Silly: Practicing Presence and Play in Spoken Word \nIn this workshop we will play with clown theory and clown games in an attempt to help us peel away the “performer’s mask” we often present to audiences when performing spoken word and we will practice and play being more present as humans in front of an audience.  We will explore our “body of delight” (everyone has one) and look at how this can infuse our poems and our performance with new perspectives.  Please wear comfortable clothing and come prepared to move and be still including lying on the floor and laughing out loud.  Be willing to be seen as silly. \nTickets are now available: http://thecultch.com/events/free-silly-rc-weslowski-masterclass/\n \nMasterclass entry is not included in Festival Pass. \nAccessibility Info: \nThe Cultch recently underwent major renovations\, which included increasing accessibility for people with disabilities. \nAll areas but the balcony are wheelchair accessible. SUMMARY:CIPS Orientation 2016
DESCRIPTION:CIPS ORIENTATION\n\nPoets participating in the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam are required to attend this orientation. The focus will be on making sure everyone is aware of the rules and format of the tournament\, the location of the venues\, community resources available to them\, and the Honour Code (hint: play nice and everything will be groovy.) You can expect to hear from the festival directors\, Jillian Christmas and Erin Kirsh\, and from our CIPS Tournament Director\, Johnny MacRae\, who will tell you all kinds of useful things\, including the make-up of the protest committee (which we hope will never be convened.) \nIt’s also a great chance for everyone to meet each other and socialize outside of the competition. After the orientation\, visiting poets who are SpoCan venue representatives will receive their travel subsidy cheque. \nThis discussion is for CIPS competing poets ONLY. \n  \nAccessibility Info: \nCafé Deux Soleils has been the main venue for the Vancouver Poetry Slam since 1999. It is sold out every Monday by fans of spoken word poetry. It is an iconic venue run by a staff that are friendly and promote progressive values.\nCafé Deux Soleils is a semi-accessible venue to wheelchairs and scooters. They have recently completely renovated the bathrooms\, installing three ungendered stalls. However there is no wheelchair-accessible bathroom. Please read the full report from the Radical Accessibility Mapping Project for more details.

SUMMARY:Teen Angst Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Teen Angst Poetry \nSomewhere in the back of your closet gathering dust and turning yellow with age is comedic gold. Those old journals\, poems\, and essays you wrote as a teenager when you thought you could do no wrong\, would probably make you cringe at your former feelings if you were to read them today. Now\, imagine sharing them in front of an audience. That’s exactly what happens at Teen Angst. \nSara Bynoe’s Teen Angst Night is an open mic comedic reading series where everyday people read from their embarrassing old journals\, poems\, songs\, essays (and more). So\, get digging through your old notebooks and find some gems! \nYou can share anything (poetry\, songs\, letters\, journals\, diaries\, essays\, stories\, plays\, lists\, etc) so long as it follows these rules: \n1- The work must be your own. \n2- You must have written it between the ages of 10-19. \n3- You cannot be proud of the work you share. It’s best if you’re super embarrassed. \nOpen to the general public. This event is All Ages and by donation\, no one will be turned away for lack of funds. CASH ONLY\, tickets available at venue. Minors are allowed in the tavern in the afternoon. \n  \nAccessibility Info: \nStorm Crow Tavern has tables placed closely together and a very narrow hallway to the bathroom area.

SUMMARY:Point of Inflection Cinemagraph Project
DESCRIPTION:Point of Inflection: \n(Real Vancouver Writer’s Series/SAD MAG) \nPoint of Inflection is a collection of short pieces of writing (150 words or less each by approximately 12 writers) around the idea of the focal moment of change (a “point of inflection”)\, expressed in any way the writer chooses. We will showcase the collaboration in a final gallery exhibition where the pieces of writing are displayed next to the cinemagraph that they inspired. \nThis innovative and moving display will be re-launched at Verses Festival of Words on Sunday April 24th from 11 PM – 1 AM! The event is all ages\, $8 in advance and $10 at the door. If you miss the readings on the 24th\, don’t worry\, the visuals will still be up for viewing and free to walk through until April the 27th at SPACE\, a gallery venue new for this year’s Verses Festival. \nTickets available now through Brown Paper Tickets: \n\n\n\n\nhttp://pointofinflection.brownpapertickets.com\n\n\n\nAccessibility info: \nThe space is not wheelchair accessible through the front entrance\, but can be accessed through the back door.

SUMMARY:Hullabaloo Underground Indies 2016
DESCRIPTION:Underground Indies is the chance for individual slammers to show the breadth and depth of their poetic skills. After day one of prelims on Friday April 22nd\, we’ll take the poetry off the stage and put it into a different format. The audience will be arranged in a circle around the performance area. There will be no stage and no microphone. Instead 16 poets will compete in a head-to-head format to determine the best slam poet at Hullabaloo. \nAlice MacKay Room (downstairs from the main concourse).\nStarts after Day One Team Bouts\, around 10:30pm.\nEnds around midnight.\nRules:\nEach school can nominate one poet to represent them at Underground Indies. This might be the winner of your school slam or your team captain. The selection process is up to the school or organization. If we have less than 16 reps\, then we will have an open sign-up directly proceeding the competition to bring the number of slammers up to 16. \nThere are no judges\, or rather\, everyone is a judge. 16 poets are randomly chosen into 8 pairings. In each pairing\, the two poets play rock/paper/scissors to determine who goes first. After both poets have performed\, the winner is determined by audience applause. \nTo go all the way and complete the final match at Underground Indies\, a poet will need four poems. \nThe time limit of 3 minutes and 10 seconds is still in effect. If a poet goes over time\, the host will enter the circle and interrupt their poem. \nAs in previous Indies Finals\, the final round has no rules. It is the Anarchy Round. You can have multiple people\, music\, props\, costumes\, whatever you like. However\, unlike previous years\, breaking the rules is no longer a requirement of the Anarchy Round. And yes\, the time penalty is still in effect in the Anarchy Round. That is one rule you can’t break. \nAccessibility Info:\n \nThe VPL Central Branch has elevators to reach the downstairs rooms where the Hullabaloo events are being held. There are wheelchair accessible bathrooms. For more details\, refer to their list of facilities.
