SUMMARY:Point of Inflection Cinemagraph Project
DESCRIPTION:Point of Inflection: \n(Real Vancouver Writer’s Series/SAD MAG) \nPoint of Inflection is a collection of short pieces of writing (150 words or less each by approximately 12 writers) around the idea of the focal moment of change (a “point of inflection”)\, expressed in any way the writer chooses. Local artists Christoph Prevost\, David Phu\, and Michael Champion will then create a cinemagraph and accompanying musical composition that interprets that piece. We will showcase the collaboration in a final gallery exhibition where the pieces of writing are displayed next to the cinemagraph that they inspired. \nThis innovative and moving display will be re-launched at Verses Festival of Words on Sunday April 24th from 11 PM – 1 AM! The event is all ages\, $8 in advance and $10 at the door. If you miss the readings on the 24th\, don’t worry\, the visuals will still be up for viewing and free to walk through until April the 27th at SPACE\, a gallery venue new for this year’s Verses Festival. \nTickets available now through Brown Paper Tickets: \n\n\n\n\nhttp://pointofinflection.brownpapertickets.com\n\n\n\nAccessibility info: \nThe space is not wheelchair accessible through the front entrance\, but can be accessed through the back door.

DESCRIPTION:The land of poetry spreads out far and vast. There’s a lot of territory to cover. You could spend a whole day just traveling from metaphor to extended metaphor. You sign-up for the whole three-hour session\, during which you’ll circulate through a series of games\, lessons\, and exercises that will help you expand your poetic range and learn a whole lot more about how wide and varied the territory of poetryland is. \nOur feature poets\, Janet Rogers and Lishai Peel\, will be leading workshop stations at this event\, along with Winona Linn and experienced versifiers from our WordPlay Poetry-in-Schools team. \nThis is event is open to all BC Youth aged 14–19 free of charge. SUMMARY:Hullabaloo Underground Indies 2016
DESCRIPTION:Underground Indies is the chance for individual slammers to show the breadth and depth of their poetic skills. After day one of prelims on Friday April 22nd\, we’ll take the poetry off the stage and put it into a different format. The audience will be arranged in a circle around the performance area. There will be no stage and no microphone. Instead 16 poets will compete in a head-to-head format to determine the best slam poet at Hullabaloo. \nAlice MacKay Room (downstairs from the main concourse).\nStarts after Day One Team Bouts\, around 10:30pm.\nEnds around midnight.\nRules:\nEach school can nominate one poet to represent them at Underground Indies. This might be the winner of your school slam or your team captain. The selection process is up to the school or organization. If we have less than 16 reps\, then we will have an open sign-up directly proceeding the competition to bring the number of slammers up to 16. \nThere are no judges\, or rather\, everyone is a judge. 16 poets are randomly chosen into 8 pairings. In each pairing\, the two poets play rock/paper/scissors to determine who goes first. After both poets have performed\, the winner is determined by audience applause. \nTo go all the way and complete the final match at Underground Indies\, a poet will need four poems. \nThe time limit of 3 minutes and 10 seconds is still in effect. If a poet goes over time\, the host will enter the circle and interrupt their poem. \nAs in previous Indies Finals\, the final round has no rules. It is the Anarchy Round. You can have multiple people\, music\, props\, costumes\, whatever you like. However\, unlike previous years\, breaking the rules is no longer a requirement of the Anarchy Round. And yes\, the time penalty is still in effect in the Anarchy Round. That is one rule you can’t break. \nAccessibility Info:\n \nThe VPL Central Branch has elevators to reach the downstairs rooms where the Hullabaloo events are being held. There are wheelchair accessible bathrooms. For more details\, refer to their list of facilities.

SUMMARY:Hullabaloo's 2016 All-Star Slam
DESCRIPTION:Are your students finding poetry boring? Unexciting? An archaic form practiced by old people obsessed with nature imagery? Try the All-Star Slam. It brings the poignancy\, hilarity\, and immediacy of slam poetry competitions to the stage. The All-Star Slam pits three poetic champions head to head to head in an all-out battle of poetic verve and wit. 2016’s All Stars will be Hullabaloo Poet of Honour Janet Rogers\, Toronto’s Lishai Peel\, and Kingston’s Winona Linn.  Hosted by 2010 Vancouver Poetry Slam Champion and Hullabaloo co-director\, Johnny MacRae. \nHow does it work? Simple. The poets perform one poem each in three rounds\, all of which are judged on a scale of zero to ten by the audience — in this case\, the students! In the end\, the winner is announced\, though in effect\, everyone has won. Students have been moved\, inspired\, and engaged by poetry\, often for the first time in their lives. \nThe topics are engaging\, the presentation is amazing\, and the competition is riveting. Guaranteed to jumpstart students into writing careers of their own. \nTo bring a school group to this show\, contact Johnny MacRae through wordplaypoets@gmail.com. \nDoors at noon.\n Show starts at 12:30pm.\n Show ends at 2pm. \nWant to see it in action? SUMMARY:VAN SLAM SEMI FINALS #2 featuring Winona Linn
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver poetry house presents feature poet\, Winona Linn. \nWinona Linn is a poet\, performer\, teacher and spoken word artist. Although originally from Kingston\, Ontario\, Linn made a name for herself in the thriving poetry community of Halifax\, Nova Scotia while attending the University of King’s College. In only her second year at school\, she slammed for and won a spot on the two-time champion Hali Slam team and competed on a national level at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word. \nGovernmental ideals and politics aside\, it is not uncommon for Linn’s poetry to draw on personal experiences\, looking to family and her childhood as sources of inspiration. Her dynamic personality is reflected in her performance\, as she frequently has her audience in a fit of laughter one moment with smart wordplay and comedy and close to tears the next as she quietly delivers solemn confessions. Linn has performed her poetry in numerous venues across Canada\, Europe\, and the United States\, winning slams and featuring at a variety of events. \nThe 8 poets competing tonight will be\n(in no particular order):\nSonder\nAndrew Warner\nBrandon Zhu\nEmily Kelsall\nEverett Montinola\nJulia Pileggi\nCoral More\nMartina Danserau \nThere will be two 3 minute rounds and all poets will compete in BOTH rounds. \nAs always\, there will be an open mic and two-round poetry slam\, (3 min) where poets accumulate points to qualify for the Van Slam team. \nCafe Deux Soleils and the Van Slam strive to be a trans friendly place and a hate speech free zone.
Help us with that. We also acknowledge that this event takes place on unceded First Nations Territory. \nAlso\, be kind to our VOLUNTEER door staff.
