SUMMARY:Chicken Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Come unwind over brunch at Chicken Sessions! Inspired by Mike McGee’s Kitchen Sessions\, and the local Under the Bed series run by RC Weslowski and Wilhelmina Salmi\, Chicken Sessions is a house concert\, a poetry and story performance space\, a potluck\, a party\, a salon with some Louisiana hospitality tossed together and served up by host and instigator Pamela Bentley in a big\, beautiful East Van heritage house. A poet and musician invited in advance cap the event\, with debut work in 12 open mic spots beforehand. Chicken Sessions #20 is a Sunday afternoon backyard brunch with poet Kelsey Savage\, and musical group R.A.P.S\, consisting of Isaac Bond\, Dana I.D. Matthews\, Kevin Fitzgerald and CIPS 2015 Champion Prufrock Shadowrunner. Chicken Sessions is the final event of Verses Festival of Words 2016. \n12:30 Food and Socializing \n1:30 Welcome by Pam Bentley\nOne Spots\n1.(Sign-up in person)\n2. (Sign-up in person)\n3. Tickets not available beforehand.\n \nAccessibility Info (provided by The Coop residents\, not an accessibility expert): \nThe Coop is an old house with no accessibility modifications. There is a dirt driveway up to a large wide gate. The backyard is mostly grass with some gravel on path. If there has been little rain to make the ground soft\, this is navigable by wheelchair and scooter. There is one small drop down from the side yard to the back. There is a bathroom on the ground floor level through two regular size doors with a one step drop down into the unit. If it rains\, we will be on the main floor which is up a dozen stairs at the front of the house or from the backyard. Inside\, everything on the same level. The bathroom is probably big enough to be wheelchair accessible.

SUMMARY:Word Circus
DESCRIPTION:Word Circus\n\nA whirlwind of words occurs as Brendan McLeod\, Lexi Marie\, Rup Sidhu\, and Billeh Nickerson perform feats of acrobatic wordsmithery before your very eyes. The round robin format allows the artists to respond to one another and build the energy in a spontaneous way. If you’ve ever seen a ‘workshop stage’ at a folk festival\, you’ll know how exciting it is to see artists perform in this more relaxed and informal atmosphere where anything can happen. \nBuy Tickets for Word Circus now on Brown Paper Tickets: \n\n\n\n\nhttp://wordcircus2016.brownpapertickets.com\n\n\n\n\nFrom Word Circus founder\, Justin McGrail: \nThe Word Circus began in Montreal in 1994 as a series of live performances by Fluffy Pagan Echoes\, the spoken word quintet featuring Scott Duncan\, Ran Elfassy\, Justin McGrail\, Victoria Stanton\, and Vince Tinguely. It broke away from the then standard poetry-reading format by incorporating group pieces\, memorized text\, and having the poets present in four thematic rounds. We also sat together on stage for the show\, which made alternating at the mike easier\, and made us really listen to each other’s performance. \nMoving to Vancouver in 1995\, I adapted the show format to a monthly series at the then just opened Whip Café Gallery on East 6th.  Each month\, three different local poets would be featured in a show that combined themes\, music\, and audience participation – in posters and event-listings audience members were encouraged to bring poetry. On stage were four chairs\, three of which would be occupied by our featured poets.  I would announce the theme of each round\, and ask the audience if anyone had brought a poem that worked with it. One poet from the audience would be invited onstage to join the trio\, and then we’d have four poems on one theme. Additionally\, the show featured DJ’s (mainly acid-jazz and house) who would live mix in music with each poem. The result was a groovy\, unpredictable\, fun show\, that ran for 14 months\, and included performances by Tim Lander\, David Campbell\, Alexandra Oliver\, Kedrick James\, Andrew Lithgow\, John Sobol\, Rick Keating\, Andrea Thompson\, Davy Bouvier\, Ralph Alfonso\, Sheri-D Wilson and many more. \nThe last Word Circus was in the summer of 1998\, which I hosted and performed in for the CBC on the Plaza\, with poets Diane Laloge\, Graham Olds\, SR Duncan\, and Ed Varney\, with music supplied by Jim Good. \nOne tradition maintained in Montreal and Vancouver was that the theme of the third round is always love — ’cause\, everyone’s got at least one poem about love! \nThis show is All Ages. General seating. Box office and Will Call will open with doors at 2:45pm. Box office is CASH ONLY. There is an ATM located in the building. \nThis show may contain strong language\, controversial issues\, and words that make you re-evaluate your life. Advance tickets are NOT mailed out they can be picked up at the Will Call station at the venue. Box office and Will Call will open with doors at 2:30pm. Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable. \n  \nAccessibility Info: \nHavana Theatre is an accessible venue. To reach the theatre\, you must pass through the restaurant to the gallery space. On the right\, is a black door leading into the theatre. There is a narrow hallway and two doors to access the performance space\, but no stairs. The hallway to the washroom is very narrow and is accessible for wheelchairs\, but may be a tight fit for some scooters.

SUMMARY:Ian Keteku Masterclass
DESCRIPTION:Your Poem is Lasagna\, Layered.\nJoin ‎2010 World Poetry Slam champion Ian Keteku as he explores the layers beneath a poem and performance. Many times performance poets unintentionally come across as preachy\, ranting\, angry.\n\nHow do we get our “message” to be effectively communicated? How do we intentionally dig beneath the layers to find the truth of our story?\n\nKeteku has coached two championship teams ‎and assisted countless others in finding the deeper and layered truth behind the issues and topics poets choose to write about.\n\nSearching for the actual truth\, not the truth we hope is true or think should be true helps us communicate better\, opens up doors for creativity and in a slam context equates to higher scores.\n\nParticipants are asked to bring writing utensils and concepts for poems they hope to write one day. Do not come in with poems you are unwilling to have changed.\n\nThis event is all ages. \nTickets are available via Brown Paper Tickets. Masterclass entry is not included in Festival Pass. \n\n\n\n\nhttp://ianketekumasterclass.brownpapertickets.com\n\n\n\nAccessibility Info: \nHavana Theatre is an accessible venue. SUMMARY:Poetry Is Dead Launch (Secret Identities Issue)
DESCRIPTION:Poetry Is Dead Launch (Secret Identities) \nPoetry Is Dead’s “Secret Identities” issue explores hybrids like the comic book\, the prose-poem and the super-hero. Fallen Kryptonians\, mad scientists\, Sith Lords\, teenaged sidekicks\, cyborgs\, dinosaurs\, screaming-pink glam Hologram bands — we’re peeling off the mask\, stripping down the tights\, slipping inside the Fortress of Solitude. \nFor the launch of our “Secret Identities” issue\, we have contributors from the issue along with special guests for performances and readings. Plus a free 1-year subscription included with your ticket! \nReadings by: \nAlex Leslie has published a book of prose poems ‘The things I heard about you’ and a book of short stories ‘People Who Disappear.’ Alex received the 2015 Dayne Ogilvie Award\, which is given annually to an emerging LGBT writer by the Writers Trust of Canada. \nJill Mandrake is a contributing editor at Geist Magazine\, and is a lifetime member of Vancouver Cooperative Radio\, where she produced the parade of vinyl rarities called Sister DJ’s Platter Party. \nTaylor Brown-Evans is a writer\, cartoonist and illustrator living and working in Vancouver. His words and drawings have crept into Ricepaper\, Geist\, The Feathertale Review\, Matrix Magazine\, and the occasional bathroom wall. \nErin Flegg is a semi-nomadic journalist moonlighting as a poet. She usually lives somewhere between Coast Salish and St’at’imc territories (Vancouver and Lillooet). \nCynara Geissler\nDon English\n+Special guests \nHosted by Ben Rawluk\, Dina Del Bucchia and Daniel Zomparelli \npoetryisdead.ca\n@poetryisdead \nTickets now available: http://thecultch.com/events/poetry-is-dead-superhero-issue/ \nThis event is all ages. SUMMARY:Teen Angst Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Teen Angst Poetry \nSomewhere in the back of your closet gathering dust and turning yellow with age is comedic gold. Those old journals\, poems\, and essays you wrote as a teenager when you thought you could do no wrong\, would probably make you cringe at your former feelings if you were to read them today. Now\, imagine sharing them in front of an audience. That’s exactly what happens at Teen Angst. \nSara Bynoe’s Teen Angst Night is an open mic comedic reading series where everyday people read from their embarrassing old journals\, poems\, songs\, essays (and more). So\, get digging through your old notebooks and find some gems! \nYou can share anything (poetry\, songs\, letters\, journals\, diaries\, essays\, stories\, plays\, lists\, etc) so long as it follows these rules: \n1- The work must be your own. \n2- You must have written it between the ages of 10-19. \n3- You cannot be proud of the work you share. It’s best if you’re super embarrassed. \nOpen to the general public. This event is All Ages and by donation\, no one will be turned away for lack of funds. CASH ONLY\, tickets available at venue. Minors are allowed in the tavern in the afternoon. \n  \nAccessibility Info: \nStorm Crow Tavern has tables placed closely together and a very narrow hallway to the bathroom area.
