SUMMARY:Hullabaloo Slams: Bouts 1 & 2
DESCRIPTION:The preliminary rounds erupt\, with eight teams competing in two simultaneous slams!\nLocation: Alma VanDusen & Peter Kaye rooms (downstairs from the main concourse).\nDoors: 6:00 PM\nStart: 6:30 PM\nEnd: 8:00 PM\nEvery team in Hullabaloo will perform in one bout this evening\, either the first or second slate of prelims. The bout draw\, determining the time for each school’s bout\, will be conducted before the tournament begins.  All teams and audience members are encouraged to attend the entire evening\, especially Bouts 3 & 4 at 8:00 PM (and stick around afterwards for the Underground Indies!)\nThe poems will be judged by five random members of the audience who are not directly affiliated with any of the poets or schools. They will give each poem a score between 0 and 10. We will drop the high and low scores\, and each poem will receive a total score out of 30. Each bout has four rounds (three rounds of solo poems and a group piece round) so the highest possible team score is 120.\nOpen to the general public. All Ages. General seating. Seating cannot be reserved in advance.\nAccessibility info\nThe VPL Central Branch has elevators to reach the downstairs rooms where the Hullabaloo events are being held. There are wheelchair accessible bathrooms. For more details\, refer to their list of facilities.\nThere’s always an attentive audience at Hullabaloo\n

SUMMARY:Last Chance Youth Slam featuring Fannon Holland
DESCRIPTION:This will be the last chance slam for youth poets trying to make the youth slam playoffs in March. Poets who have slammed only once during the season and those not in the top 8 already will be given preference. If you’ve already qualified you are encouraged to come out and cheer on those poets still trying to make the playoffs. \nSign up starts at 7pm. Show begins at 8 with a poetry open mic followed by our featured poet\, from Guelph\, Ontario\, Fannon Holland \n“Fannon comes to us from Pittsburgh via Chicago where he met his Canadian wife … which only goes to show you that poets have great taste in women. Fannon believes that spoken word poetry is the perfect marrage between writer and actor and is honoured to put his BA in theater to good use on local and national stages.\nHis seven year journey to win Guelph a national title took him as close to second in the nation in 2014 and that goal was accomplished in 2016 at CFSW in Winnipeg.” \n$4 for 18 and under. $6-$10 for 19 and up. \nWe acknowledge this event is taking place on stolen First Nations territory of the Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh peoples. We also strive to be a trans friendly event. Help us accomplish that goal. \nIt’s also CASH ONLY at the door. Be nice to our volunteer door staff please. \nrcarcee2@gmail.com for more info

SUMMARY:Youth Poetry Slam featuring Santiago Urena
DESCRIPTION:Poets 13-20 years of age are encouraged to particpate in this event. No props or costumes mor musical accompaniment is allowed in your performance. Just you and your poem with the words you wrote. 3 minute time limit. 2 rounds. \nThis is the second to last youth slam of the current regular season. That means if you have not competed yet and you still want to go out for the 2017 team you need so slam this month AND Feb to at least have a chance because every poet in the playoffs needs to compete at least twice during the season. No more procrastination. \nBesides the poetry slam we will also have a poetry open mic and a feature performance from the current Youth Slam Grand Slam Champion\, Santiago Urena \n“Santiago Ureña is a mexican-born collector of quirky neckties\, thrift store mug connoisseur\, and professional rambler. \nAn accomplished second-guesser\, Santiago is Vanslam’s current youth slam champion; they like to write about their experiences\, love\, their strange infatuation with meteorological phenomena\, a possible lack of clean underwear. \nWhen they aren’t writing poetry or being a massive fan and aspiring friend of Carly Rae Jepsen\, you might find them doing such things as playing music in an indie rock band\, eating cereal with warm milk\, putting pineapple on pizza\, or trying to figure out what it is the word “adult” really means and why everybody seems to want to be one nowadays.” \nThe youth slam is open to poets 13-20 years of age. You CANNOT be turning 21 BEFORE Sept 1st\, 2017 if you want to qualify for the team. \n$4 for 18 and under. $6-$10 for 19 and up. \nWe acknowledge this event is occuring on unceded Coast Salish territory. We also strive to create trans friendly spaces. Please help us in doing that. It’s also cash only at the door. \nrcarcee2@gmail.com for more info
