SUMMARY:Talk the Talk: Intersectionality and Arts Communities
DESCRIPTION:Guided by two qualified facilitators\, Sonmin Bong and Jen Sung\, this talk asks participants to explore Kiberlé Crenshaw’s model of intersectionality in relation to artistic communities. \n“Sonmin Bong is a first-generation Korean immigrant feminist who works\, plays and\, most importantly\, loves on unceded Coast Salish territories. She is a host and producer of Vancouver’s explicitly feminist radio show\, The F Word Media Collective\, on Vancouver Co-op Radio CFRO.  Her passion and interests include intersectionality\, racial justice\, food politics\, cultural exchange\, and interdependence. She is fuelled by womxn of colour’s righteous outrage\, resistance\, ancestral knowledge\, and wisdom.” \n“Jen Sung\, also goes by artist name Jen Sungshine\, is a queer Taiwanese artist-activist based in Vancouver\, BC. A facilitator by trade\, she works with creative technology and social justice media to evolutionize and revolutionize QTBIPOC visibility and community-based work through Love Intersections\, Our City of Colours\, Out in Schools and the Social Justice Institute at the University of British Columbia. Jen’s artistic practice involves learning through unlearning; and instead of calling you out\, she wants to call you in\, to make artful social change with her. In the audience\, she looks for art in your interruption.” \nActive listeners will be present for community care. Come prepared with questions\, suggestions and a respectful voice.\nThis discussion is a free event. Seating cannot be reserved in advance. \nAmerican Sign Language (ASL) interpretation will be available for this event.\n \nThis event is a scent-reduced space. To assist us in our goal of increased access\, please be aware of our attempt to reduce the impact of personal scented products (perfumes\, scented oils\, etc) in our festival spaces. \nHavana Accessibility Info:\nHavana Theatre is a mostly accessible venue. \nTo reach the theatre\, you must pass through the restaurant to the gallery space. On the right\, is a black door leading into the theatre. There is a narrow hallway and two doors to access the performance space. This narrow hallway is possible for wheelchairs to pass through\, but can be difficult for larger scooters to maneuver. There are no stairs. Washrooms are located at the end of a hallway which is maneuverable but also narrow.

SUMMARY:Talk the Talk: Activism and the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Guided by two qualified facilitators\, Deirdre Lee and Melanie Matining\, this talk is likely to engage with a number of topics that challenge and re-form our collective ideas of activism in the arts. \n“Deirdre Lee is a poet & performer\, a writer & a survivor. An artist who works in words & rhythms\, Deirdre Lee is as comfortable on stage as she is inside her own head.  Each of her performances are unique interactions with audiences\, energy & herself\, a bridge spanning the internal & external. A member of Hali Slam in 2015 & the 2017 team captain\, she is currently at work on her first album (which will include both stories & songs). Deirdre makes her home in Kjipuktuk\, near the Halifax harbour on unceded Mi’kmaq territory where she beads\, bakes & gets bossed around by her cats.” \n“Melanie Matining is a queer pin@y activist and community organizer on the traditional and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples. Her work focuses on the importance of social spaces in movement building and the necessary intersections of community-determined access\, placemaking\, and solidarity building. She convenes communities to create platforms for celebration\, healing\, and just dancing it all out. She organizes queer events such as Denim Vest and Open Relationship\, which do exactly such. In the recent past\, she also worked as the Community Development Manager at Heartwood\, a social space that was centred on community and movement building. On the day to day\, Melanie walks everyday in love and liberation alongside communities working towards queer rights\, Indigenous solidarity\, and migrant justice.” \nActive listeners will be present for community care. Come prepared with questions\, suggestions and a respectful voice.\nThis discussion is a free event. SUMMARY:Mashed Poetics featuring Spice by the Spice Girls
DESCRIPTION:Mashed Poetics is a night of spoken word and music mash up.  We pick a music album\, find a cover band and ask poets to write new poems based on the songs.  Then we do it all up live with the poets performing in between songs. Mashed Poetics has been a part of the Verses festival and its earlier incarnation\, the VIP Festival\, since the beginning.  We’ve done it up big with an 11 piece band tribute to Aretha Franklin.  We’ve done it up loud with a show featuring RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE.  This year we chew on the best bubblegum the 90’s had to offer…SPICE by the SPICE GIRLS. \nWe have 10 poets and a 9 piece SPICE GIRLS cover band The SPICE Racks.  It’s all happening at our official Verses Festival venue\, The WISE Hall and Lounge at 1882 Adanac Street.  This will be a late show\, starting at 9:30. \nHere are the poets and the songs in order for the night.  As you can see we have a world class lineup for you once again this year. \nWannabe — Rebecca Lea Thomas \nSay You’ll Be There — Nisha Patel \n2 Become 1 — Betsy Warland \nLove Thing — Charlie Petch \nLast Time Lover — Lisa Webster \nMama — Fiona Tinwei Lam \nWho Do You Think You Are — Molly Billows \nSomething Kinda Funny — Kay Kassier \nNaked — Amal Rana \nIf U Can’t Dance — Mike McGee \nThere will be no intermission due to time constraints.  Tickets are $10 in advance through Brown Paper Tickets here and $12 at the door.  Get your advance tickets here: http://mashedpoeticsspice.bpt.me/\nAt the door is cash only. SUMMARY:Adventures in Poetryland Workshops
DESCRIPTION:The land of poetry spreads out far and vast. There’s a lot of territory to cover. You could spend a whole day just traveling from metaphor to extended metaphor. Then there’s rhyme and alliteration. Poets have spent years investigating the nooks and crannies of those areas. What about the magical land of improvisation? Or the dark arts of banter? What about the crafting of chapbooks? Or the martial discipline of mic technique? \nThere’s a lot to discover and if you’re a young\, aspiring poet\, this is your chance to travel through these lands with an experienced spoken word poet as your guide. \nAlma VanDusen & Peter Kaye Rooms\nStart: 10:00 AM\nEnd: 12:30 PM \nAdventures in Poetryland is a series of workshops on the different aspects of spoken word poetry. You sign up for the whole three-hour session\, during which you’ll circulate through a series of games\, lessons\, and exercises that will help you expand your poetic range and learn a whole lot more about how wide and varied the territory of poetryland is. \nOur All Star Slam poets – Johnny Trinh\, Charlie C Petch\, Dana I.D. Matthews\, and Rabbit Richards – offer four different 45-minute workshops that will help push your writing and performance to another level.  All participants take TWO (2) of the four workshops on offer.  (Due to limited capacity\, participants cannot be guaranteed their choice of workshop – but we’ll do our best!) \nBut how will you know which workshop to choose if you don’t know what workshops are on offer?  Well\, just keep reading and you’ll find out! \nAdventures in Poetryland Workshops: \nFinding Your Voice: Johnny Trinh \nDive into vocal technique! \nThis workshop will go over rudimentary and advanced exercises to help you find breath support\, articulate sounds\, and find appropriate vocal range to more effectively deliver your pieces. It will include some basic information on how you physically produce sound. You’ll learn quick techniques to do just before you step up to the mic\, as well as exercises before/after performance\, and while you PRACTICE so that you have good vocal health throughout your careers. Mild physical demand\, completely accessible\, all bodies and abilities welcome. \nLove Your Embarrassment: Charlie C Petch \nWhat makes us different should be what makes us the most proud. \nOpening with the performance of a poem on the theme\, this workshop offers you the chance to dive into the subjects that are “too embarrassing” to write about.  After the opening poem\, you’ll play icebreaker games that encourage you to talk about something you’ve been told is embarrassing\, or feel is embarrassing. You’ll be encouraged to write about this like it’s the best darn thing in the world\, then share the wonder with the other participants.  This workshop is ALL about living up to the Youth Slam’s motto: Be brave! Be weird! Be yourself! \nExamining the Heart of Your Poetry: Rabbit Richards \nYou’ve written a poem. You’ve put in effort to practice and possibly memorise it.  You’ve even performed it once at a slam.  But is the poem “done?” \nThis workshop delves into what makes a poem feel finished and how that evolves over the performance lifetime (both your own and the poem’s).  You’ll examine the interplay between the emotional landscapes of the poem\, yourself\, and your audience.  After reflecting on your own most frequently used performance tools\, you’ll explore those of other poets as a means of expanding your performance toolset – and maybe the heart of your poems. \nRhyme or Reason: Dana I.D. Matthews \nNo matter how you spit\, rhyming never hurts a bit! \nJoin Dana I.D. Matthews for an in-depth\, hands-on exploration of rhyme.  In this workshop\, you’ll get to see how effortless and fun rhyming can be through a series of games that help you build rhyming maps\, free-style stories\, scheme up metrics\, and create your own rhyming dictionary.  Along the way\, you’ll get to see rhyme in all its forms: whether as a fun way to play with words\, or as a poetic device integral to many oral traditions. \nThis is event is open to all BC Youth aged 13 to 18.  You must pre-register to attend.  General registration will open on MONDAY\, APRIL 10TH. \nPLEASE NOTE: Pre-registration does not guarantee you entry into the workshop series.  Registration will be available on a first come\, first serve basis.. \nAccessibility info: \nThe VPL Central Branch has elevators to reach the downstairs rooms where the Hullabaloo events are being held. There are wheelchair accessible bathrooms. For more details\, refer to their list of facilities.
