SUMMARY:Andrea Gibson Q + A with Molly Billows at Massy Books
DESCRIPTION:“Do you want to hear the best story you’ve ever heard in your life?” Andrea Gibson asks into the microphone. The audience leans forward in silent anticipation. “So I met this woman and I went home to her house with her.” They pause\, “already a great story.” The audience erupts with laughter\, a happy juxtaposition after being so quietly captivated. Smirking into the spotlight\, Andrea continues\, “…So we’re about to kiss for the very first time. And right before our lips touch\, she jumps from the bed\, runs to the closet and grabs a stethoscope\, puts the ear thingies in my ears and slides the knob down her shirt onto her heart and says\, ‘I want you to listen to my heart speed up when you kiss me.’ And I kissed her! And her heart got faster and faster y’all.” By this point the room itself almost feels like a stethoscope pumping with the galloping hearts of the fans. “Moral of the story\, buy a stethoscope\,” Gibson says\, and there’s that laughter again\, followed by music\, and they launch into a love poem.\n\n \nAndrea Gibson’s work is bursting with lovely\, humorous\, and thoughtful anecdotes that dive deep into the workings of the human heart. It is too rare that we have the opportunity to speak candidly with artists who have made such an impact on our ideas of love\, relationships\, and our own intimate feelings.\n\nThis event allows us to get closer. With the help of moderator\, Molly Billows\, we are invited to lean in and engage in conversation with Andrea Gibson\, a writer and performer who has moved most of us to tears and laughter (sometimes all at once)\, but more important\, a writer whose work has moved us closer to one another.\n\nAndrea’s latest book will be available for signing at this event:\n\nLatest book\, “Take Me With You” (released Jan 23\, 2018) on Penguin Random House. \nLatest album\, “Hey Galaxy” (released Jan 12\, 2018) on Tender Loving Empire. Was the #1 spoken word record on iTunes the week of release\, #5 on Heat Seekers. \n“Andrea Gibson’s work looks likes poetry\, and sounds like poetry\, but feels like something much larger\, more expansive. Reciting sharp and sublime lines over musical accompaniment\, Gibson has made a career out of truth — heartbreak\, gender\, mental illness\, politics\, and unending love are all excavated in their performances.” -Posture Magazine \n\nEvent entry is by donation. Suggested donation $6 – 10. All proceeds go to support Verses Festival of Words. #VSFestival18 \nAccess info for new Massy Books location: \nFront door: 33″\nBack door: 33″\nWashroom door: 34″\nThere is a small lip (1/4″) at the front entryway as well as a 1/8″ lip at the back. \nA detailed diagram with accessibility information is available here: \nhttps://drive.google.com/openid=0B5oaZ7t3A_MmUVJ2TEpReTByLTR3VU5kS0tYNU1PWm1UcHBV \n  \nYou can check out Andrea’s dynamic live performance the day before this signing\, with Molly Billows opening. SUMMARY:Youth Slam Finals featuring Rachel Taylor
DESCRIPTION:We acknowledge this event is taking place on the unceded territories of the Squamish\, Musqueam and Tsleil-Waututh peoples. \nWell this is it\, our youth slam finals where we find out who will be on the 2018 youth slam team and which poet will be crowned our youth slam grand slam champion. \nThere will be 3 rounds of poetry including two 3 minute rounds and one 1 minute round. \nCompeting poets include\, Aly Brook\, Victoria Rozon\, Benedict Mendes\, Nicola Durrant and Sage. \nWe will also have a feature performance from the one and only\, Rachel Taylor…”Rachel Taylor is a queer comedy performance poet currently living on the unceded territory of the Musqueam\, Tsleil-Waututh and Squamish Nations. She was born and raised a cradle Anglican in the Tsilhqot’in region. She is a Timelord Hufflepuff with all the worst characteristics of both parties. She’s a reading fanatic\, a comic-book-movie addict\, and is introverted enough that she has never played D&D.\nRachel has been a competitive slam poet for over five years\, and represented Vancouver as a storm poet at Women of the World Poetry Slam in Brooklyn\, NY in 2016″ \nWe may have time for an open mic but that’s not for certain. Also admission for everyone will be $6-$10 as this is our finals and a fundraiser for the team. It’ll be cash only at the door. \nPlease be nice to our door staff. When we reach capacity they are simply enforcing the venue’s fire code regulations. \nVancouver Poetry House/Vancouver Poetry Slam strive to put on trans friendly events. We encourage you to help us achieve our goal. \nrcarcee2@gmail.com for more info.

SUMMARY:Christine Bissonnette features at the Vancouver Poetry Slam
DESCRIPTION:The Vancouver Poetry Slam presents this week’s feature\, Christine Bissonnette!! \nAbout our feature:\nChristine Bissonnette is an acadian poet\, writer\, teacher\, and children’s entertainer originally from Nova Scotia\, the unceded traditional ancestral territory of the Mi’kmaq people. Since 2011\, she’s lived in Vancouver\, on the unceded traditional ancestral territories of the Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh people. \nFrom 2008-2016\, she studied and performed as a stage actor — notably as part of the ensemble cast for ‘Last of the Red Hot Lovers’\, which Vancouver is Awesome named as #3 in their list of the top 10 Vancouver theatre productions of 2016. She left acting at the beginning of 2017 to focus on spoken word. Her poetry is heavily influenced by the theatrical monologue form\, often using a non-linear story structure to explore topics like fantasy\, desire\, perfectionism\, and change in first person. Just like in monologue\, curiosity and sensuality are integral to each performance piece. As a teacher\, Christine facilitates explorations in voice\, performance and poetry for kids aged 4 and up through one-on-one instruction\, and for elementary school classrooms as a guest instructor. She also conducts one-on-one spoken word workshops for adults with cognitive disabilities through Kudoz. Next to poetry\, her biggest passion is the voice\, and its potential for beauty and power. You can learn more about her by visiting her website: 9creativelives.com \nWe are now in the Winter Season\, the season that decides Vancouver Poetry Slam team for April 2018. Now through February 2018 poets will have a chance to collect points to try and make it into the youth slam playoffs at the end of March 2018. \nThroughout the season we wil be playing with the format of the slam…sometimes head to head competition\, sometimes costumes and props will be allowed and other challenges will incorporated. \nHowever to kick things off we will stay with the traditional two rounds of 3 minute long poems. 12 poets in the 1st round and the top 5 (barring ties) in the 2nd round. \nThe youth slam is open to poets 13-20 years of age.\n$4 for 18 and under $6-$10 for 19 and up. \nWe will also keep having a poetry open mic and a featured performer. This month we are extremely happy to have as our feature\, Valeen Jules. \n“Valeen Jules\, also known as Kā’ ānni\, is a determined young Indigenous warrior from the Nuu-chah-nulth and Kwakwaka’wakw Nations. A former foster kid\, homeless youth and 1st-yr college dropout\, she is now known as a political organizer\, motivational speaker\, youth outreach worker\, spoken word artist\, black snake killer and ”overeducated extremist” across Turtle Island. She released her first chapbook ʔiiḥmisic in July 2016 which has been used in the curriculum of a Humanities course at Emily Carr University. Originally from Kyuquot\, she now resides on Snuneymuxw territories.”\nwww.valeenjules.ca \nAcknowledge this event is taking place on the unceded\, settler occupied territories of the Squamish\, Musqueam and Tsleil Waututh peoples. \nAll Vancouver Poetry House events strive to be trans friendly and accessible to all bodies. Please help us with that goal. \nIt’s CASH ONLY at the door. \nrcarcee2@gmail.com for more info.
