SUMMARY:Spoken Word Jamboree
DESCRIPTION:Spoken Word Jamboree kicks off not only Hullabaloo\, but also Verses Festival of Words! All participating teams will be invited to perform a one-minute intro poem to tell us more about themselves and their school\, and Halifax’s El Jones will rock the house as the night’s feature.\nThe Jamboree provides all participating poets a chance to meet each other outside of a competition setting – and you a chance to glimpse the spirit of loving camaraderie that makes Hullabaloo one of the year’s best events! The event doubles as orientation for the teams\, so there will be some information presented specific to them. However\, this is a public event: you don’t need to be on a participating team to attend! So don’t be shy – come on down and help us start this festival right!\n6PM-8PM / VPL Central Branch / Alice MacKay Room / Free\nThe Vancouver Poetry House respectfully recognizes that our series events take place on the traditional and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-waututh)\, and sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) nations. We recognize that colonial violence led to the creation of Vancouver\, and how that allows our organization to exist. We aim to always be cognizant of who is represented on our stages\, and to do what we can to reach out to communities who are underrepresented thereupon.\nARTIST BIO: EL JONES\nEl Jones is a poet\, educator\, journalist and advocate. She was the fifth Poet Laureate of Halifax\, and currently holds the 15th Nancy’s Chair in Women’s Studies at Mount Saint Vincent University. El is a co-founder of the Black Power Hour\, a radio show developed collectively with prisoners. Her advocacy and work fights anti-Black racism in Canada\, walking in the path of our great-grandmothers who resisted relentlessly.\nACCESSIBILITY:\nThe VPL Central Branch has elevators to reach the downstairs rooms where the Hullabaloo events are being held. There are wheelchair accessible bathrooms. For more details\, refer to their list of facilities (http://www.vpl.ca/location/central-library).\nThis event is a scent-reduced space. To assist us in our goal of increased access\, please be aware of our attempt to reduce the impact of personal scented products (perfumes\, scented oils\, etc) in our festival spaces.\nHULLABALOO\nA one of a kind youth poetry event that kicks off Verses Festival of Words!\nHullabaloo is BC’s Youth Spoken Word Festival. SUMMARY:Extraordinary General Meeting | Sunday April 7\, 2pm | 111 W Hastings\, Fifth floor board room
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, April 7 2019 VPH is holding an Extraordinary General Meeting of the membership (EGM) to discuss changes to the by-laws made\, and passed by\, the board of directors. \nThe reasons we have re-written the by-laws are: \n\nTo make it possible for people  who earn money on VPH stages to take part in the larger decision-making by being on the board of directors\nTo make it easier for the organization to keep up with the community’s needs\n\nIn order to finalize these changes\, we need people\, you\, to come out and vote! \nThere is also one small change made to the VPH constitution. It was made to bring it into line with point 1 above. \nThe agenda\, new by-laws and constitution are available as a single pdf here. As always\, the current by-laws are on the VPH website here. \nIn the new by-laws there are many mentions of the new VPH policy manual. All the materials made reference to in the new by-laws are already included\, but as with these kinds of documents\, the policy manual is in progress. At the meeting we will make all the relevant sections available\, and the whole will always be available to membership if these by-laws are ratified. \nIf you have any questions in advance of the meeting\, or would like more information\, please contact the board at admin@vancouverpoetryhouse.com. Also contact us if you would rather read the new by-laws on the Drive. We’ll send you a link. \nPlease note: under our current by-laws\, you must be a member to vote\, but you may purchase or renew your membership at the outset of the meeting. \nThe meeting will take place in the 5th floor\, W-Room which the City has allowed us to use free-of-charge for the purposes of this EGM. The boardroom is located on the 5th floor of the same building where VPH has its offices: 111 W Hastings Street. \nThe meeting will start at 2PM and is scheduled to last until 4PM. \nNote: the first hour is business. The second hour is socializing\, poetry and cake. Meet the new staff! Schmooze with your board of directors 🙂 \nAsk about what’s on for Verses this year!

SUMMARY:VPH Board Meeting
DESCRIPTION:All Vancouver Poetry House members are welcome to attend board meetings. As poets you know you have a voice. You can use it to help make VPH sustainable and a vibrant reflection of our shared values. \nAll you need to do is give one of the board members some notice (a couple of days would be good) of your intent to be in attendance. Because the VPH office is in a locked building\, one of us will meet you at the Woodward’s building entrance and let you in. You can find the board members here. You can reach us at hello@vph.com. \nFor those of you with tendencies toward claustrophobia\, be aware that the board room is quite small. Also know that as a member you have a voice\, but not a vote. For that you need to become a board member. We’d welcome that too! It’s a great way to learn about the administrative thread in the life of professional poets.
