The winner goes on compete at the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam as part of Verses Festival of Words April 23-May 2\, 2026. \nVan Slam Finals will follow this format: \n\n3 slot Open Mic\nFeature Poetry Performance\nSlam – 3 rounds: 3 min. × 1min. x 3min. poems*\n\n*only the top 4 scoring poets move on to the third round\, which is winner-take-all \nASL Interpreters will be on hand for this event \nAbout the Feature: GC Vasquez \nChristian is the son of Salvadoran immigrants whose courage to leave El Salvador and build a new life in the United States shaped his journey. Born in Los Angeles\, California during the time \nof the Rodney King unrest\, his family later moved to Seattle\, Washington before eventually settling in British Columbia\, Canada. \nHe graduated from Gallaudet University in Washington\, D.C. with a Bachelor of Arts in American Sign Language and is widely recognized as an ASL storytelling champion and performer within \nthe Deaf community. Christian is also the founder of ASLCart.com and creator of the acclaimed ABC Luck! card game\, which promotes storytelling through play. His recent work includes translating Native American myths for the Lower Elwha Tribal \ncommunity and leading a Sign Language Arts Workshop at Riksteatern Crea in Stockholm\, Sweden. He has directed Artistic Sign Language for the plays Gaslight and Cloud Tectonics at \nSound Theatre Company in Seattle\, delivered Visual Vernacular workshops across Canada and the U.S.\, and served as Production Manager for the Visual Vernacular Festival in Washington\, D.C. and Indianapolis\, Indiana\, USA. Last Chance Slam) before our April Finals to choose the Van Slam Champion of 2025/2026! \nOur Van Slam March feature is Lucia De Luca\nAbout the feature \nAs an English teacher and spoken word poet\, Lucia (Lu-CHEE-a) De Luca plays with stories in the classroom and at the mic. She is a community and self-taught narrative poet who aims to turn unenjoyable life events into empowering performances. Lucia is the first two-time recipient of QWF’s Ian Ferrier Spoken Word Prize. She performed at the 1st Accenti Magazine International Festival of the Arts in Italy and has shared her craft in cities across Canada and Australia. It also extends its services to broader communities in the beautiful and unceded Coast Salish territories within lush Cascadia bioregion. \n  \n  \nGoals for the workshop: \nLanguage Justice: The Art of Living Experience Through Cultural-Linguistic Lens is an opportunity for artists to gain insight on how language justice can be incorporated into their art work and for organizing better spaces for visibility of Linguistic Activism and Justice\, with a broad lens on organizer and artist considerations in an event space and in creation/curation processes. The Cascadia team covers the roles of the stewards\, the major concepts of  Language Justice (LJ)\, and the vision for Community Equity and dissolution of ‘Phonocentrism’. To learn more about the slam format and the Van Slam Finals qualifying process\, go to our website. \n  \nABOUT OUR FEATURE: \n\nShima Aisha Robinson is an amiskwaciy-wâskahikan (Edmonton) born student\, community builder\, poet and spoken word artist who embodies\, with every literary and scholarly effort\, the ancient meaning of her chosen pen name. Dwennimmen is the name of an ancient African Adinkra symbol\, which means strength\, humility\, learning and wisdom. It is no surprise\, then\, that this veteran of the Alberta poetry community uses a searing intellect and dynamic precision-of-language  to create poetry which ushers her readers and listeners toward greater understanding and poignant reflection. For Shima Aisha Robinson aka Dwennimmen\, poetry has long been a compass\, a salve\, an anchor and guiding light. She uses the potential and force of poetry to uncover the full range of her cerebral\, linguistic and spiritual fortitude. This is why her every poem and performance testifies to an emerging power and wisdom\, an authentic\, deeply human potency which she hopes to pass on to listeners and poetry-lovers around the world. She is the author of two books including HORN\, 2016\, Denseverse (self published)\, and Bellow\, 2022\, Glass House Press. Shima is  the 10th Edmonton Poet Laureate. His Haida and Metis/Cree background is imperative to how he approaches his work. He understands the needs of our communities and wishes to help out with visuals and sounds Although he spent his life as a Haida artist and performer\, he is best known for his time spent as a hip hop artist under the name Manik 1derful. He currently does Haida art on various mediums which range from clothing \, to large scale murals to jewelry. He believes in a positive\, informed and an accurate representation of Indigenius Peoples and Culture. He is a knowledge and song keeper for the Haida peoples as well as a Midewin Pipe Carrier who has dedicated his entire life to the Indigenous way of life.
