SUMMARY:Adventures in Poetryland Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:The land of poetry spreads out far and vast. There’s a lot of territory to cover. You could spend a whole day just traveling from metaphor to extended metaphor. Then there’s rhyme and alliteration. Poets have spent years investigating the nooks and crannies of those areas. What about the presentation of the text? Or the magical land of improvisation? \nThere’s a lot to discover and if you’re a young\, aspiring poet\, this is your chance to travel through these lands with an experienced spoken word poet as your guide. \nAlma VanDusen & Peter Kaye Rooms (downstairs from main concourse).\nStarts at 10am and ends around 12:30pm. \nAdventures in Poetryland is a series of workshops on the different aspects of spoken word poetry. You sign-up for the whole three-hour session\, during which you’ll circulate through a series of games\, lessons\, and exercises that will help you expand your poetic range and learn a whole lot more about how wide and varied the territory of poetryland is. \nOur feature poets\, Janet Rogers and Lishai Peel\, will be leading workshop stations at this event\, along with Winona Linn and experienced versifiers from our WordPlay Poetry-in-Schools team. \nThis is event is open to all BC Youth aged 14–19 free of charge. You must preregister to attend by sending an email to wordplaypoets@gmail.com with: 1) your name 2) your age\, 3) the school you attend\, and 4) a couple of sentences about your prior experience with writing or performing. SUMMARY:RC Weslowski Masterclass
DESCRIPTION:Free Silly: Practicing Presence and Play in Spoken Word \nIn this workshop we will play with clown theory and clown games in an attempt to help us peel away the “performer’s mask” we often present to audiences when performing spoken word and we will practice and play being more present as humans in front of an audience.  We will explore our “body of delight” (everyone has one) and look at how this can infuse our poems and our performance with new perspectives.  Please wear comfortable clothing and come prepared to move and be still including lying on the floor and laughing out loud.  Be willing to be seen as silly. \nTickets are now available: http://thecultch.com/events/free-silly-rc-weslowski-masterclass/\n \nMasterclass entry is not included in Festival Pass. \nAccessibility Info: \nThe Cultch recently underwent major renovations\, which included increasing accessibility for people with disabilities. \nAll areas but the balcony are wheelchair accessible. SUMMARY:Ian Keteku Masterclass
DESCRIPTION:Your Poem is Lasagna\, Layered.\nJoin ‎2010 World Poetry Slam champion Ian Keteku as he explores the layers beneath a poem and performance. Many times performance poets unintentionally come across as preachy\, ranting\, angry.\n\nHow do we get our “message” to be effectively communicated? How do we intentionally dig beneath the layers to find the truth of our story?\n\nKeteku has coached two championship teams ‎and assisted countless others in finding the deeper and layered truth behind the issues and topics poets choose to write about.\n\nSearching for the actual truth\, not the truth we hope is true or think should be true helps us communicate better\, opens up doors for creativity and in a slam context equates to higher scores.\n\nParticipants are asked to bring writing utensils and concepts for poems they hope to write one day. Do not come in with poems you are unwilling to have changed.\n\nThis event is all ages. \nTickets are available via Brown Paper Tickets. Masterclass entry is not included in Festival Pass. \n\n\n\n\nhttp://ianketekumasterclass.brownpapertickets.com\n\n\n\nAccessibility Info: \nHavana Theatre is an accessible venue.
