SUMMARY:Adventures in Poetryland
DESCRIPTION:This event will be originating from the Unceded Ancestral Lands of the Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.\n \nAdventures in Poetryland is our annual workshop series led by our Festival Feature Performers.  This year they are Apollo the Child and Nisha Patel.  These workshop are open to all students participating in Hullabaloo.  It’s not open to the general public but it’s so cool we wanted to let you know about them.  Apollo’s workshop starts at 10 am while Nisha will conduct hers at 11:15.\nHere’s what Apollo has prepared…\n“How to unify intention and artistic practice to write an effectively communicated poem. This workshop will help teach poets how to drive their idea home whether on the page or on stage. Poets will break down and analyze one of Apollo the Child’s (workshop leader) poems and write a collaborative piece using tools that were taught”\n \nAnd this is what Nisha will be presenting…\n“Speaking Up: Poetry About Difference”\nIn this workshop\, participants will be asked to explore difference in their lives\, and how to articulate challenge and triumph alike in ways that invite empathy and understanding\, inviting audiences to overcome bias or preconceptions in witnessing and understanding truth. \n\n\n\nParticipants will be asked to brainstorm original\, truthful stories from their own lives and have the opportunity to craft a poem centering their experience to be shared with the group\, while confronting the question of “What is the most important story you can tell\, and why?”

SUMMARY:Adventures in Poetryland Workshops with Janice Jo Lee\, Chris Tse\, Patrick de Belen and Johnny D. Trinh
DESCRIPTION:This event will be taking place on the unceded\, traditional territories of the Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil-Wautuh peoples.\n \n4 different workshops presented by World Class poets\, Janice Joe Lee\, Chris Tse\, Patrick de belen and Johnny Trinh lead students through Adventures in Poetryland.  Each workshop offers a unique perspective into a different writing approach for students to expand their practice. Pre registration for each workshop is required.  Open to highschool students who are not taking part in the competition as well. email hullabaloo@vancouverpoetryhouse.com to register\n \nWorkshop A with Janice Jo Lee\nAncestor Song\nTell me about your people. Do your people come from the mountains? The river? The forest? What do your people gather around? Music\, fire\, elders? Are your people diggers\, or athletes\, or travellers? In this workshop we will look into the archive of our memory of where we come from. Where our knowledge ends\, our imagination begins in writing stories of our ancestors. Your people can be your familial ancestors\, or the artists whose tradition you follow\, your closest friends\, or the community that raised you. We will honour our roots and write anthems of ourselves. Dress in clothes you can move in. All bodies and abilities are welcome and will be accommodated.\n \nWorkshop B with Christopher Tse\nWriting ourselves into our stories\nThomas King says that stories are all we are\, so then why does so much popular art seem devoid of the artist these days? In times of whack politics and divisive rhetoric targeting people for their identities\, the need for art to act as resistance is urgent and timely. Writing ourselves into our stories is celebrating our identities in all their diverse and beautiful dopeness\, about speaking truth to power and claiming our space(s) in an artistic landscape that has far too long been dominated by the same kinds of stories. Let’s figure out how to write poetry and tell stories that unsettle\, that disrupt\, that say\, “I’m here and this is why my story matters.” \n\n \n \nWorkshop C with Johnny D. Trinh \n“It Begins With Intention”\n\n\nWhy do we speak? Why do we need to speak right now? At the core of your poem\, your story\, your origin- what is it you want? This workshop will encompass all areas of the creation process from inception\, first drafts\, rehearsal\, performance\, reflection. It will focus on how spoken word is not linear\, but that each part informs the others\, and that everything is driven by intention. Johnny will help you embody your words with clear intentions and healthy performance practices. Then Johnny will discuss how performance and rehearsal takes you back to the editing board\, and then back to the stage. Come with poems or pieces of poems that you want to develop. Leave with a deeper understanding of your own performance style\, and the significance of clarity and specificity in your work.\n \nWorkshop D with Patrick de Belen\n“White Knuckle Narrative”: Exploration of Empathy\, Mental Health and Healing through Spoken Word.\n“White Knuckle Narrative” is an entertaining and interactive storytelling workshop facilitated by award-winning Spoken Word Artist\, Patrick de Belen. It is designed to guide participants through the exploration of PDB’s process of writing and performing spoken word\, and it’s impact on his mental health\, youth work and life growing up as an angry\, broke and mouthy Filipino-Canadian kid in Toronto. Find out more about his workshops at www.PatrickdeBelen.com \n\n \nACCESSIBILITY:\nThe VPL Central Branch has elevators to reach the downstairs rooms where the Hullabaloo events are being held. There are wheelchair accessible bathrooms. For more details\, refer to their list of facilities (http://www.vpl.ca/location/central-library).\nThis event is a scent-reduced space. SUMMARY:2020 Hullabaloo All Star Slam featuring Chris Tse\, Patrick de Belen and Ruthless. Hosted by Johnny D. Trinh
DESCRIPTION:This event will be taking place on the unceded\, ancestral territories of the Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil-Wautuh peoples.\nFor 2020 We have a brand new location and day for the annual All Star Slam.  This year we’ll be at the fully accessible\, Central Branch of the Vancouver Public Library in the Alice MacKay room.  The All Star Slam will bear witness to poetic thunder and lightning\, as three poets compete in an all-out battle of poetic verve and wit.  Hosted by Johnny D. Trinh\, this year’s event will Chris Tse\, Patrick de Belen and one other poet to be named soon.  All of them bringing the poignancy\, hilarity\, and immediacy of poetry slam to the stage\, this event is perfect for students who are in danger of finding poetry boring!\nChristopher Tse Bio\nChristopher Tse is an artist\, educator\, and settler currently living on Songhees\, Esquimalt\, and WSANEC territory in what is otherwise known as Victoria\, BC. He placed second at both the 2011 Poetry Slam World Cup and 2016 Rio International Poetry Slam\, and is a former Canadian national slam champion. A brown boy with 6th generation immigrant roots on Turtle Island\, Tse is currently finishing his master’s in Critical Social Work with a focus on how arts-based activism aligns with youth organizing and decolonization. He writes on identity\, intimacy\, immigration\, and basketball.\n \nPatrick de Belen Bio\nFrom arts educator\, to event host\, to youth mentor\, to award-winning poet/writer\, to most recently\, directing\, Patrick de Belen is a storyteller of many kinds. He strongly believes through these stories he can save the world and himself – and secure the bag – all at the same time.  Along with his own personal projects\, PDB has collaborated with many notable organizations – using storytelling to build and serve his community. Find some of these works on his website: PatrickdeBelen.com / follow him on instagram at @patrick_debelen   www.PatrickdeBelen.com\n \nIvy Adad aka Ruthless bio \n“Ruthless” is a Filipinx writer born in Manila Philippines. In 2014\, she moved to the stolen territories of Katzie\, Semiahmoo\, Kwantlen\, Kwikwetlem\, Qayqayt\, and Tsawwassen First Nations. \nRuthless is studying Journalism and Creative Writing at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. She writes about the effects of diaspora in her life. \nRuthless attributes her relationship to prose and poetry to an indecisive lover. She writes to make words love her back\, and revels in the rejection she constantly receives \n \nTickets are $6\nPlease get in touch with Hullabaloo Director RC Weslowski at hullabaloo@vancouverpoetryhouse.com to book your tickets\nHow does it work? Simple. The poets perform one poem each in three rounds\, all of which are judged on a scale of zero to ten by the audience — in this case\, the students!
