SUMMARY:C.R. Avery\, Regie Cabico & Sheri-D Wilson
DESCRIPTION:This cabaret will disregard acceptable taste in favour of the exceptionally tasty. Through the realms of raunch\, these artists will invert normalized concepts of sex and sexuality\, inviting us into a new land of kink and freedom. Come dressed as you are\, as you wish to be\, or as you wish to be seen. \nSheri-D Wilson has published eight collections of poetry. Her most recent\, “Goddess Gone Fishing for a Map of the Universe\,” is the first poetry book to use QR Codes that connect to video/audio/and interactive talk-back. Her collection\, Re:Zoom (2005\, Frontenac House)\, won the 2006 Stephan G. Stephansson Award for Poetry\, and was shortlisted for the CanLit Award. In 2011 she edited\, The Spoken Word Workbook: inspiration from poets who teach (CSWS/BCP)\, an educational tool for teaching and writing Spoken Word. In 2009 CBC called her one of the Top 10 Poets in Canada. In 2003 she won the USA Heavyweight title for poetry\, and in 2006 The National Slam of Canada presented her with the Poet of Honour Award. Of the beat tradition\, in 1989 Sheri-D studied at Naropa University’s Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics\, in Boulder\, Colorado. Sheri-D is known as The Mama of Dada. \nC.R. Avery is a one man hip hop beatbox blues harmonica americana iconoclast. C.R.’s lyrical skills and vocal delivery have brought him to the forefront of the international spoken word scene. He is a past winner of the CBC national Poetry Face-Off. Scratchy\, smoky\, beaten by years of cigarettes and off-mike shouting in cabarets all over the world\, C.R. Avery’s voice is instantly identifiable. C.R. has been described as Bob Dylan in the body of Iggy Pop. \nRegie Cabico has been featured on two seasons of Def Poetry Jam. Cabico has won top prizes in the 1993\, 1994 and 1997 at National Poetry Slams. His poetry appears in over 30 anthologies including Aloud: Voices from the Nuyorican Poets Café\, Spoken Word Revolution and Slam. Cabico is of Filipino American descent and is an out and proud gay man who has been called the Lady Gaga of spoken word poets. \n[box]This show is All Ages.[/box] \n[box]Tickets holders to CIPS Bouts #1-#4 will receive free admission to this show. Stick around![/box] \n[box]Tickets are $8 in advance\, $10 at the door. Or you could buy a festival pass.[/box]

SUMMARY:Mashed Poetics – Aretha Franklin's Greatest Hits
DESCRIPTION:Mashed Poetics is a night of spoken word and music mash up where poetic collaboration and cross pollination occur and the divide between “page” and “stage” poets is blurred. A classic music album is chosen and poets are assigned a song from the album to create a new piece of work for the show. A cover band is also created to perform the chosen album live with poems performed in between the songs by the poets. Mashed Poetics has been running in Vancouver for the past three and a half years. \nMashed Poetics has been a part of the Verses Festival (formerly the Vancouver International Poetry Festival) since the festival’s inception. Previous album’s performed at the festival include Led Zeppelin’s Led Zeppelin IV and Licensed to Ill by the Beastie Boys. For the 2013 Verses Festival the album is Aretha Franklin’s Greatest Hits from 1971. And we are extremely happy to announce Chelsea Johnson will be performing the vocals for this show. \nSome other albums we have performed include Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid”\, The White Stripes’ “Elephant”\, Guns and Roses’ “Appetite for Destruction”\, Rush’s “Moving Pictures”\, Prince’s “Purple Rain” and The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s “Are You Experienced.” \n[box]No minors allowed. This event is 19+.[/box] \n[box]Tickets holders to Ivan Coyote & Veda Hille will receive free admission to this show.[/box] \n[box]Tickets are $8 in advance\, $10 at the door. Or you could buy a festival pass.[/box]

SUMMARY:Ivan Coyote & Veda Hille
DESCRIPTION:Ivan Coyote is interested in collaborations where the text and the score are equal players\, not just storytelling with musical accompaniment\, but a conversation between two artists: the text is listening to the chord progressions and pacing itself with the downbeat\, and the music is responding to what happens next in the story. \nIvan shows us the transformative power of storytelling\, that collecting and remembering oral history not only preserves a vital part of our families and where we come from\, but that a good story can help inspire us to reinvent a better future. Ivan has released five books with Arsenal Pulp Press. \nVeda Hille will be accompanying Ivan on her piano. Veda has toured and recorded\, playing hundreds of shows and festivals and has released on 13 records. She is an East Van favourite who wins over audiences with her wit\, charm\, and musicianship. \n[box]No minors allowed. This show is 19+[/box] \n[box]Ticket holders for this show receive free admittance to Mashed Poetics. Stick around![/box] \n[box]UPDATE: Advance tickets are not available the day of the show. Ticket are still available and can be bought at the door\, starting at 6pm for $15. Or you could buy a festival pass.[/box]
