Inspired by Gloria Anzaldua’s La Fronteras/Borderlands\, we will discuss the relationships various races\, genders\, sexualities\, and languages have with each other and how we find a space to define ourselves within a world that often asks us to choose. \nBuy tickets for Spoken Word Masterclass with Sister Outsider \nSister Outsider Poetry is an award-winning duo representing two of the top three female slam poets in the world\, Dominique Christina and Denice Frohman. Their tour marks the first time that two Women of the World Poetry Slam Champions have paired up. They have appeared on six national poetry slam finals stages and have six championships collectively. SUMMARY:Seeding the Poem: Masterclass with Robert Priest
DESCRIPTION:We will focus on techniques for writing micro or ‘seed’ poems — aphorisms\, slogans\, hook lines\, jokes\, maxims etc. with a view to also using them as centering points for longer oral/musical pieces such as spoken word poems\, song lyrics or even formal poems such as sonnets or villanelles. Participants should come away with at least one\, and probably a lot more than one\, micro work and and at least the beginnings of a maximally sized work containing the micro work. \nBuy tickets for Seeding the Poem: Masterclass with Robert Priest \nRobert Priest\, is the author of fourteen books of poetry\, three plays\, two novels\, lots of musical CDS\, one hit song and many columns for Now Magazine . His words have been decried in the legislature\, posted in the Transit system\, quoted in the Farmer’s Almanac\, and sung on Sesame Street. His 2008 book: Reading the Bible Backwards peaked at number two on the Globe and Mail’s poetry list. Rosa Rose\, a book of children’s verse\, in praise of inspirational figures (Wolsak & Wynn) recently won a silver moonbeam award in the U.S. and is a book of honour in the Lion and Unicorn Award for Excellence in children’s poetry in North America. SUMMARY:Adventures in Poetryland
DESCRIPTION:The land of poetry spreads out far and vast. There’s a lot of territory to cover. You could spend a whole day just traveling from metaphor to extended metaphor. Then there’s rhyme and alliteration. Poets have spent years investigating the nooks and crannies of those areas. What about the presentation of the text? Or the magical land of improvisation? \nThere’s a lot to discover and if you’re a young\, aspiring poet\, this is your chance to travel through these lands with an experienced spoken word poet as your guide. \nAlma VanDusen & Peter Kaye Rooms (downstairs from main concourse).\nStarts at 10am and ends around 12:30pm. \nAdventures in Poetryland is a series of workshops on the different aspects of spoken word poetry. You sign-up for the whole three-hour session\, during which you’ll circulate through a series of games\, lessons\, and exercises that will help you expand your poetic range and learn a whole lot more about how wide and varied the territory of poetryland is. \nOur feature poets\, Lucia Misch and Morgan Purvis\, will be leading workshop stations at this event\, along with veteran versifiers from our WordPlay Poetry-in-Schools team. \nThis is event is open to all BC Youth aged 14–19 free of charge. You must preregister to attend by sending an email to wordplaypoets@gmail.com with: 1) you name 2) your age\, 3) the school you attend\, and 4) a couple of sentences about your prior experience with writing or performing. DESCRIPTION:S.O.R.P.L.U.S.I. is an acronym representing an arts-based personal and professional development methodology that emerges out of Dub Poetry and is founded on eight guiding principles of Self-knowledge\, Orality\, Rhythm\, Political content & context\, Language of communication\, Urgency\, Sacredness\, and Integrity. The methodology – based on the seminal work of pioneer Dub Poet Anita Stewart and developed by her daughter d’bi.young anitafrika – is an approach to artistic creation that (a) focuses on the holistic development of the artist in the process of creating their work; and (b) equips the artist with the tools to help others to develop as well. The method is unique in that its approach is holistic\, emphasizing creative\, physical\, emotional\, psychological and spiritual growth\, as well as it uses the individual’s lived-experience as catalyst for all explorations. \nThrough meticulous excavation of each principle\, using a range of meditations\, movement\, games\, creative exercises\, techniques\, and readings\, the artist learns how to engage in self-analysis and reflection while developing a critical-analytical framework and an oppression-awareness point-of-view\, both of which become central to their personal and creative process. Each Sorplusi principle is a challenge to individual artists to be continually self-aware\, self-implicating\, and honest before\, during\, and after generating artistic creations. \nSorplusi affirms each artist’s accountability to and responsibility for (in other words to account for and respond to) their communities\, co-creating a comprehensive eco-system in which artists and community members are mutually accountable\, responsible and empowered to affect social change in their lives. the methodology can be applied as a training and developmental tool in diverse contexts such as in schools (at all grade levels)\, teacher-training courses\, and community workshops. \n[box type=”info” style=”rounded” border=”full” icon=”none”]This event is All Ages.
