It’s all come down to this…after a full season that started back in August 2012 we have whittled it down to the top 8 youth slam poets who will be competing to make the next youth poetry slam team. The top 4 poets make the squad and will represent Vancouver and the very first Youth Can Slam National Youth Poetry Slam Competition.
The top 8 poets from the season are as follows
01) 45 points Mariah Dear
02) 32 points Andrew Warner
03) 25 points Victoria Fraser
04) 21 points Connor Doyle
04) 21 points Jacob Gebrewold
06) 18 points Floyd VB
07) 17 points Tyler Gilbert
08) 07 points Jarren Bato
We will also have a feature performance by 2011 Canadian Team Slam Champion from Edmonton, Knowmadic
“Ahmed Ali also known as Knowmadic, is an award winning Somali-Canadian poet who is known to use humor and word play in his poetry to create awareness of social issues that aren’t often given attention. He feels he is continuing the legacy passed on by his ancestors who shared a common interest in spoken word. Ahmed has toured throughout Canada and the United States performing poetry.”
Finals will be held at a special location so we can fit everyone in to the room and not turn anyone away. Finals will be held at ASTORINOS at 1739 Venables on the corner of Venables and Commercial right beside the Kettle Society and across teh street from Womyns Ware. The #20 bus stops right outside the venue on Commercial Drive.
We will need help setting up and cleaning up so if you can volunteer please get a hold of Kyle Mallinson.
Tickets are $5 in advance or $5-$10 sliding scale at the door.
NOTE: this event is separate from the Hullabaloo festival (but run by the same larger organization, Vancouver Poetry House). Participating school teams do not receive free admission to this event. But you should totally go. It will get you psyched up about poetry.
