The Spoken Word Jamboree kicks off Hullabaloo, the youth spoken word section of the festival with feature Morgan Purvis, Victoria’s former Youth Poet Laureate. All teams will be invited to perform a one-minute intro poem to tell us more about themselves and their school.
Alice MacKay Room (downstairs from the main concourse).
Doors at 6:30pm.
Show starts at 7:30pm.
The Jamboree provides all participating poets a chance to meet each other outside of a competition setting. It’s also where all the teams will register. Poets and coaches will receive artist passes that allow them free access to all Hullabaloo events. There will be a brief orientation and then the poetry will begin. However, this is a public event. You don’t need to be on a participating team to attend. Don’t be shy. Come on down and help us start this festival right!
About the feature:
Morgan Purvis is is a 21-year-old poet and performing artist who loves potluck brunch, feminism, and magical realist novels. She knits, sings, and spends a lot of time trying to un-hide important things. She believes in vaginal graffiti, food, and babies; she especially believes in young people being badass, in LOUD and in quiet ways.
Morgan was the 2014 City of Victoria Youth Poet Laureate and 2014 YouthCanSlam Poet of Honour, and a member of the 2013 VicSlam Team. She has been working in arts education in Victoria on unceded Lekwungen Territory for 4 years.
Most importantly, Morgan wants to scrap with your boundaries and dance with your ugly. Badass Yippy kay yay!
Open to the general public. All Ages. General seating. Seating cannot be reserved in advance.
