East-Side Eternity in association with The Verses festival Of words presents

C.R. AVERY

with

Lola Frost
DJ Su Commandate
Darcy McMurray
Lydia DeCarllo
Susan Kania

Get ready for a different kind of Sunday afternoon with C.R. Avery: one man hip hop beatbox blues harmonica americana iconoclast.

This is the official book launch for Some Birds Walk for the Hell of It published by Anvil Press. This book of poetry celebrates the virtues of the bohemian brigade, late-night denizens of inconvenient beauty, the dissolute and the temporary, lawless black leather pioneers of innovation, and every battle scarred member of this “helpless grey sky tribe”. Like a cross between Lenny Bruce and Anaïs Nin, Avery’s poetry is alternately profane, brilliantly vulgar, outrageously funny and brash in its lonesome courage, unsettling, and unquestionably original.

C.R. Avery has thrown down with several Van Slam poetry teams and the Verses Festival of Words is thrilled to welcome back this multidisciplinary maverick to launch of his third book of poetry and prose. Indulge in this weird and raucous moment with C.R. Avery, DJ Su Comandante, burlesque phenomena Lola Frost and Lydia DeCarllo, and dance artists Darcy McMurray and Susan Kanial.

Here’s the show described by CR himself:

Breakdancing nuns to Beethoven’s Ode to Joy remixed with Cool J scratch and a beat from 1997. Who zoo? Yes, Yes will then drop to a whisper for a the small choir to hum, then will be beautifully interrupted by the conglomerate of an orgy turned loud three piece rock & roll band – Boom! You lazy shit! Burning Beatlemania to a pulp fiction with just the written word regurgitated up to an inside-speaking-spice-rum voice. Oh toe-to-toe yes, yes just in time for the Russian-novel-loving air stewardess, the postmodern librarian dancer & a burlesque-boogie-boo bee trap villainess to make their entrance disguised like Hank Williams as Luke the Drifter. The shifter of poetry from juke box to calvary mountain alley. What kind of show is this? It’s my book launch motherfucker, on Anvil Press. Gonna be the goods. yes, yes.
