Our youth slam season continues as poets battle it out to see who gets to make the youth slam playoffs in March and have a chance at going toYouthcanslam Festival in Ottawa in August of 2015.

To qualify for the playoffs you must slam/compete at least twice during the season and NOT be turning 21 years of age before September 1st 2015.

There are 2 rounds of competition with 3 minute maximum length poems. All poetic styles are welcome. Poets from all backgrounds and orientations are encouraged to take part.

We have a poetry slam, a poetry open mic and a featured performer each month.

This month’s feature is going to be spectacular. It’s a special treat feature the brilliant and innovative Poetic Speed aka Komi Olafimihan a member of the 2009 Canadian Festival of Spoken Word champions The Recipe.

With this performance Poetic Speed will be doing a live painting and poetry performance in unison as he expresses the images and emotions carried in the poem and molding them into paint right before your eyes. It’s truly an event not to be missed.

“Working in the emergent tradition of Afro-futurism, Komi Olaf’s surrealistic art and spoken word poetry bridges cultural divides and speaks of the immigrant’s perspective, bringing together disjunctive images with perfect unity in a playfully profound vision of a futuristic Diaspora. Olaf pushes his work in wondrous directions, immersing his realistically portrayed characters in mysterious dream worlds of splendor and soul. Serving as a witness to the persistence of beauty within a turbulent world, he develops powerfully complex connections allowing his zeal for life to fuel his creative energies.”

Admission is $4 for 18 and under $6-$10 for 19 and up. Get there early for a good seat. We acknowledge this event is taking place on unceded First Nation’s territory. We also strive to be a trans friendly event.

Plus be kind to our door staff. They are lovely people and are only enforcing the rules given to us by Cafe Deux Soleils and the provincial fire code when limiting people into the space. Also it’s CASH ONLY at the door.
