Nine female identified poets from Vancouver will be going head to head to see which one of them will represent Vancouver at the Women of the World Poetry Slam in Albuquerque, New Mexico this March.
Poets will participate in a three round poetry slam (4 minutes, 2 minute round and a final 1 minute round). All poets perform in each round of the competition.
The order of performance in the 4 minute round will be by random draw. The 2 minute round will be in reverse order of the 4 minute round. The last round will be random draw once again.
As far as scoring goes all three rounds will be added up for each poet. The poet with the highest cumulative score will be this year’s WOWPS Champion/Representative.
The featuring for the evening will be Natasha Miller. Brace yourself for impact because Miller’s breadth of insight could leave you breathless. Drawing hard lines between personal experience, pop culture and politics, her poetry packs a serious punch – be ready.
Natasha “T” Miller is a 28-year-old African American, lesbian woman, dedicated LGBTQ activist, author and poet, raised on the west side of Detroit. Her work is a constant display of everything that she stands for as a black lesbian woman, and everything that she is striving to heal. The best words to describe her work are pain, self- responsibility, God, and forgiveness.
Cafe Deux Soleils and the Van Slam strive to be a trans friendly place and a hate speech free zone. Help us with that. We also acknowledge that this event takes place on unceded First Nations Territory.
Also, be kind to our VOLUNTEER door staff. They have to follow BC Liquor Board Rules and once we are sold out we can’t let anyone in unless someone leaves. You cannot save seats for people in line. Let them know if you are leaving. Also no ATM at the door, it’s cash ONLY.
Get there early if you want a seat or want to slam. Before 7pm.
