The poetry video has become an increasingly important form of distribution for poets. For many, YouTube has become a more common way to discover new poets and their work than the library. Is YouTube shaping the way that poets write? Which cinematic techniques work well with which poetic styles?

Chris Gilpin and Julie Peters take you on a tour of some of the best poetry videos ever produced. Poetry videos will be grouped into three categories: one-shot / performance, music video style, and animation. After each group of videos is played, Chris and Julie will converse with the audience, discussing what makes these videos work or what they could have done differently.

Chris Gilpin holds a B.A. in Film Production from UBC. His short film “Remembrance Dance” was an official selection of the Toronto International Film Festival. He is an active Vancouver poet and co-director of Verses Festival of Words.

Julie Peters holds a Masters in Canadian Poetry from McGill. Twice, she has won the right to represent Vancouver at the Women of the World Poetry Slam. She is a prolific blogger, writing on health, sexuality, and poetry.
