Vancouver poetry house presents feature poet, Kimmortal. Kimmortal is a Vancouver-based soul artist known for her deep vocals and bold lyricism. Her hybrid of soul and rap transcends autobiography and delves into topics such as race, ancestry, queer love, and mental health. Born to first-generation Filipino immigrant parents and raised in Surrey BC, it was ultimately through art and music that Kimmortal was able to gain insight into her identity and history. After completing a visual arts degree in 2011, Kimmortal has juggled her work as an arts-based youth facilitator and a performer. In the winter of 2014, she released her first album “Sincerity”, a community-funded album of songs Kim wrote over the span of 6 years performing at open mics around Vancouver. The songs reflect her vast musical appreciation for soul, acoustic, indie rock, and hip hop. Some of her favourite moments include performing at Zulu Nation’s 604 Vancouver Hip Hop Showcase, headlining The Bridge Old School Festival, and acting in Montreal’s hip-hop theatre production “Sal Capone: The Lamentable Tragedy Of”. Now, back from showcasing at Canadian Music Week in Toronto, Kimmortal is excited to work on her next album due in 2016.

There will be an open mic and three-round poetry slam: 2 min, 1 minute and 4 minute rounds where poets accumulate points to qualify for the Vancouver Individual Poetry Slam championships.

Cafe Deux Soleils and the Van Slam strive to be a trans friendly place and a hate speech free zone. Help us with that. We also acknowledge that this event takes place on unceded First Nations Territory.

Also, be kind to our VOLUNTEER door staff. They have to follow BC Liquor Board Rules and once we are sold out we can’t let anyone in unless someone leaves. You cannot save seats for people in line. Let them know if you are leaving. Also no ATM at the door, it’s cash ONLY.

Get there early if you want a seat or want to slam. Before 7pm.
