16 individual poets – one from each school – will run a gauntlet of poetic challenges to decide who will become the second-ever Hullabaloo Indie Champion.
Indie Finals Night has a unique format, one that challenges our poets to think outside of the three-minute slam box.
Round One: The Survivor Round
All 16 poets perform a 3-minute poem. The 8 highest-scoring poets advance to the next round.
Round Two: The Lightning Round
Clean slate (scores are not cumulative). The 8 advancing poets perform a 1-minute poem. The 4 highest-scoring poets advance to the next round.
Round Three: The Anarchy Round
Clean slate again. The 4 advancing poets perform a 3-minute poem; however, they must break one (or more) of the conventional rules of slam. That’s right. The poet must use a prop, a costume, a musical instrument, prerecorded track or perform a group piece with another poet. The time penalty is still in effect. Going over time does not qualify as breaking a slam rule. Any poet who does NOT break one of the slam rules listed above will received a two-point deduction on their score. The highest-scoring poet in this round becomes the Hullabaloo Indie Champion.
