16 individual poets – one from each school – will run a gauntlet of poetic challenges to decide who will become the second-ever Hullabaloo Indie Champion.
Indie Finals Night has a unique format, one that challenges our poets to think outside of the three-minute slam box.
Round One: The Survivor Round
All 16 poets perform a 3-minute poem. The 8 highest-scoring poets advance to the next round.
Round Two: The Lightning Round
Clean slate (scores are not cumulative). The 8 advancing poets perform a 1-minute poem. The 4 highest-scoring poets advance to the next round.
Round Three: The Anarchy Round
Clean slate again. The 4 advancing poets perform a 3-minute poem; however, they must break one (or more) of the conventional rules of slam. That’s right. The poet must use a prop, a costume, a musical instrument, prerecorded track or perform a group piece with another poet. The time penalty is still in effect. Going over time does not qualify as breaking a slam rule. Any poet who does NOT break one of the slam rules listed above will received a two-point deduction on their score. The highest-scoring poet in this round becomes the Hullabaloo Indie Champion.
This is an all-ages event. It may contain strong language, controversial issues, and words that make you re-evaluate your life. General seating. This event is free for all festival participants and volunteers.
Advance tickets will NOT be mailed to buyers. They can be picked up at the Will Call station in The Roundhouse’s Exhibition Hall up to one hour before the show begins.
