Poets 13-20 years of age are encouraged to particpate in this event. No props or costumes mor musical accompaniment is allowed in your performance. Just you and your poem with the words you wrote. 3 minute time limit. 2 rounds.
This is the second to last youth slam of the current regular season. That means if you have not competed yet and you still want to go out for the 2017 team you need so slam this month AND Feb to at least have a chance because every poet in the playoffs needs to compete at least twice during the season. No more procrastination.
Besides the poetry slam we will also have a poetry open mic and a feature performance from the current Youth Slam Grand Slam Champion, Santiago Urena
“Santiago Ureña is a mexican-born collector of quirky neckties, thrift store mug connoisseur, and professional rambler.
An accomplished second-guesser, Santiago is Vanslam’s current youth slam champion; they like to write about their experiences, love, their strange infatuation with meteorological phenomena, a possible lack of clean underwear.
When they aren’t writing poetry or being a massive fan and aspiring friend of Carly Rae Jepsen, you might find them doing such things as playing music in an indie rock band, eating cereal with warm milk, putting pineapple on pizza, or trying to figure out what it is the word “adult” really means and why everybody seems to want to be one nowadays.”
The youth slam is open to poets 13-20 years of age. You CANNOT be turning 21 BEFORE Sept 1st, 2017 if you want to qualify for the team.
$4 for 18 and under. $6-$10 for 19 and up.
We acknowledge this event is occuring on unceded Coast Salish territory. We also strive to create trans friendly spaces. Please help us in doing that. It’s also cash only at the door.
