Vancouver Poetry House presents: Van Slam with weekly feature poet, Barb Day, whose quirky, humorous approach to spoken word will have you chuckling all the way to Café Deux counter and back again. You won’t need dessert because with her wondrous rhyming words Barb Day makes everything seem a little bit more delicious.
“The Candy Man was a stud, he was my lifesaver, he gave me his hershey kisses, I gave him my cinnamon heart, and together we made sweet almond joy. Boy oh Boy he was a hot tamale and the lovin’ was good and plenty.” – The Candy Man
Barb Day a.k.a. Jaded is a spoken word artist from Paris, Ontario and has been performing her poems across Ontario and Canada for the past five years. She has represented multiple Ontario communities on the Canadian national stage. Jaded jazzes it up with her jovial jargon and her poems range from humorous double entendre to getting the word out on serious social issues. While advocating for community arts, she started up her own poetry slam scene in Brantford, The Brant Rant. She will be making her fourth national appearance this October in Victoria, BC. with the Burlington Slam Project. Jaded is a member of the Cambridge Writer’s Collective and ust published her first children’s novel.
As always, there will be an open mic and two-round poetry slam, (3 min) where poets accumulate points to qualify for the Van Slam team. If you’ve always dreamed of being a cheerleader, but never made the cut – now’s your chance. Silently observing and snapping is acceptable too.
Cafe Deux Soleils and the Van Slam strive to be a trans friendly place and a hate speech free zone. Help us with that. We also acknowledge that this event takes place on unceded First Nations Territory.
Also, be kind to our VOLUNTEER door staff. They have to follow BC Liquor Board Rules and once we are sold out we can’t let anyone in unless someone leaves. You cannot save seats for people in line. Let them know if you are leaving. Also no ATM at the door, it’s cash ONLY.
Get there early if you want a seat or want to slam. Before 7pm.
Doors open: 7pm, Show starts: 8pm
