Vancouver poetry house presents feature poet, Andre Prefontaine.
Andre Prefontaine is a prairie boy living in the big city that hitchhiked from Calgary to Toronto with nothing but a dream, a backpack and a head full of possibilities. A quintessential childless dad-joke machine, he’s been knighted as a tragicomic force of nature known as “Hurricane Sassy.”
He is a slam veteran with many accomplishments under his belt. Most notably the two-time consecutive win at the Canadian Underground Poetry Slam Champion (2012-2013) and the first place victory at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word with the Toronto Poetry Slam team in 2014. As an ugly duckling growing up, Andre has learned to funnel caustic wit into imagery and metaphors that never fail. Published in North America’s queer anthology “Flicker and Sparkle” his life experiences propel him to connect to the disenfranchised for reasons no better stated than “it takes one to know one.”
His performances are piñatas of high energy, bursting laughs throughout the room and seasoned with tear jerkering vulnerability. Brace yourselves for one heck of a wild ride, for Hurricane Sassy comes this way.
As always, there will be an open mic and two-round poetry slam, (3 min) where poets accumulate points to qualify for the Van Slam team.
Cafe Deux Soleils and the Van Slam strive to be a trans friendly place and a hate speech free zone. Help us with that. We also acknowledge that this event takes place on unceded First Nations Territory.
Also, be kind to our VOLUNTEER door staff. They have to follow BC Liquor Board Rules and once we are sold out we can’t let anyone in unless someone leaves. You cannot save seats for people in line. Let them know if you are leaving. Also no ATM at the door, it’s cash ONLY.
Get there early if you want a seat or want to slam. Before 7pm.
