JOB DESCRIPTION:

Part-time position managing/hosting the monthly Vancouver Youth Poetry Slam.

WORK:

The Youth Slam Coordinator is responsible for the running and maintaining the Vancouver Youth Poetry Slam.  This includes booking, paying and hosting (or finding hosts for) features during the calendar year and coordinating that information with the Vancouver Poetry Slam Slammaster because during that same September to March window the Youth Slam has travel costs and feature fees for touring Canadian poets covered by the Canada Council Granat.

Looking after the monthly slam also includes hosting or finding hosts for the show, organizing prizes, paying the poets and looking after the monthly banking for the event…making sure the float has enough change and depositing the revenue into the Youth Slam account at Vancity.

The YSC is responsible for keeping track of the scores throughout the year to determine the poets who qualify for the youth slam playoffs each March.  The YCS is responsible for booking a Finals Night venue–usually the WISE Hall.

The YSC is responsible for coordinating workshops for the poets who are in the playoffs as well as for the new youth slam team once it’s been created.  In previous years weekly workshops have been offered for all those in Finals leading up to the competition.

Past years have also included the YSC liaising with the festival director of the National Youth Slam Championships.  There hasn’t always been such a thing but it is returning in 2017. The YSC will be responsible for booking hotel rooms, airline flights and choosing a coach for the team as they prepare for what is now being called “Voices of Today.”

Unofficial duties for the YSC is offering guidance for the poets both professionally and occasionally personally.  This can include writing letters of reference for grants, education programs and University. The YSC works also as a mentor when asked and provides structure and stability for a lot of the poets.
