Hey Randy, do you know these folks at all? As soon as I saw the 20 dollar entry fee which includes a year's subscription I got a little leary. Sounds like a good way to sell subscriptions!

Not meaning to be so negatory, it's just that I've seen stuff like this before. But if you know the publication and say it's a good read I will take your word for it and maybe send something in.

I entered this contest a few years ago and ever since they keep sending me the announcements.

If $20 sounds steep I suggest checking it out for yourself.  They have an online site, I think.

Hey Clint et al;

Most of the major, well-respected literary (and many counterculture) magazines have such contests. Entry fees for the more established publications are usually between 20 and 30 dollars, and it's pretty standard to give a subscription with the entry fee.

Considering the low sell-through ratio of magazines, they don't really make money from subscriptions/store sales. Money comes primarily from ad sales, and secondarily from annual fundraisers (writing contests).

And yes, _This_ is a solid magazine, not some shady operation. It's a good idea to actually read a few issues of a magazine before sending your stuff off to it, to ensure your style/type of writing is up their alley. You wouldn't want to pay a $20 entry fee to send, say, a religious rant story to a beastiality magazine -- or would you?
