Hey poetry lovers, there's a new show in town. Well, actually it's an old event (the Main Street Poetry Slam) with a new format (read on below), and a new name (The Poetry Show!). But I'll get some of that new car smell in an aerosol can and spray it around on opening night, just to ensure it has a new feeling.
First, here's the basic details...
When: the last Tuesday of every month
Where: The Cottage Bistro, 4468 Main Street (between 28th and 29th ave)
How Much: $5
As for the show itself, we've changed things around. Now there is an open mic, followed by a feature poet, and then a poetry slam. There is no limit on the number of people we will take on the open mic (within reason), although there is still a limit on how long each person will have on the open mic (somewhere around 5 minutes, maybe more, depending on the number of people who sign up).
The poetry slam portion of the show has changed as well. The first round of the slam will be scored by judges from 0 to 10. Then, four poets will advance to the second round, which will be determined by a head-to-head match up. Two poets advance to the final round where again, they will compete in a head-to-head format. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top four poets.
As you might have guessed from the name, we're de-emphasizing the slam part of the show, and concentrating on poetry. I'm hoping that the open mic will become just as filled with poets as the slam part of the show. There's also a chance that we'll decrease the slam component of the show even further. Perhaps jumping from the first round, directly to a head-to-head final round. But all of this depends on the performers who show up. If everyone wants a big slam, that's what we'll do. If all the performers want to go open mic, that works too. The show has the flexibility to swing either way.
