IWPS Qualifying: Standings & Scores
« on: April 28, 2009, 07:11:28 PM »
Just wanted to let everyone know that the summer season qualifies poets for our Slam-off that will determine the Vancouver rep to the Individual World Poetry Slam (IWPS). IWPS 2009 happens October 8-10 in Berkeley, California.

The winning poets from our summer season of open slams will compete in September to represent Vancouver at IWPS. Basically, you could win a free trip to a rad poetry tournament in California. Pretty darn sweet, right?

Details about format for our slamoff, standings, and all that other good stuff will follow. For now, start writing those jaw-dropping poems and bring them to the next slam!

Hey, the summer season has started! This also means that we start qualifying poets from the Slamoff in September to determine which poet will represent Vancouver at the Individual World Poetry Slam in Berkeley, California.

Details about the format of the IWPS slamoff are still being ironed out by the Rules Committee. It looks like they'll make a proposal to the Van Slam family sometime soon. It looks as though the top ten poets from the summer season will qualify for the slamoff, but more on that as details become available.

In the meantime, one thing we do know is that the qualifying system is the same as with the team playoffs.

After the poet's name is the order that they performed in the first round, then their first round score. After that is the position that they performed in the second round, then their second round score, and finally their total score for the evening.

IWPS qualifying and playoff format
Lisa here, on behalf of the Rules Committee, to tell you a little bit about qualifying for iWPS playoffs, and what format those will have.

Each regular (1st, 3rd & 5th Monday) slam between now and August 31 is a qualifying slam. Each person who gets first place at one of those slams is guaranteed a berth in the playoff. The IWPS playoff is on September 7. If someone finishes first more than once, the playoff spot will be opened up to the highest-ranking second place finisher.

On September 7, poets will need to be prepared to do 1, 2, 3 and 4 minute poems. In the first round, we will have 10 poets doing 1 minute poems. There will be two sacrificial poets doing 1 minute poems, who will help to warm up the room and mitigate the effect of having to go first. After this round, the poets with the two lowest scores will be dropped from the competition.

In the second round, 8 poets will do 3 minute poems. After this round, the poets with the two lowest cumulative scores will be dropped from the competition.

Then there will be a break.

After the break, there will be a 4-minute sacrifice, and then 6 poets doing four minute poems. After this round, the two poets with the lowest cumulative scores will be dropped.

In the fourth round, 4 poets will be doing 2 minute poems. Whoever finishes the night with the highest score will represent Vancouver at IWPS in Berkeley!

If you have any questions, please let us know, and the Rules Committee would be happy to address them. We are: myself, Sean, Angus, Duncan and Trevor.

Are the scores from each round carried over or is there a clean slate in any or all of the rounds?

The second open slam of the summer season was a very high-scoring bout with the reigning Vancouver IWPS rep, Zaccheus Jackson, showing that he is still one of Vancouver's top slammers.

After the poet's name is the order that they performed in the first round, then their first round score. After that is the position that they performed in the second round, then their second round score, and finally their total score for the evening.

Only a poet's highest ranking performance is shown in the overall standings. So, for instance, if a poet places third one night and first another night, only the first place placing will show in the standings.

Chances are that you will need a first place finish, or a very high ranking second to qualify for the Slamoff.

Chris Tse? How did he get all the way over to Vancouver?

Don't break him. We want him back.

The scores are carried over. That's the reference to "cumulative".

Joe McDonald won the Youth Slam last week, and then showed up at the regular slam and schooled everyone. Joe also volunteers at the slams. Hoorah for poets who volunteer! (clearly volunteering is the key to poetry slam success *wink-wink* *nudge-nudge*)

After the poet's name is the order that they performed in the first round, then their first round score. After that is the position that they performed in the second round, then their second round score, and finally their total score for the evening.

Hey, I've been away this week so I haven't had a chance to post last week's scores until now. From the look of things, Zac, our reigning champion, is in fine form and will be the clear favourite to repeat as Vancouver's IWPS rep.

After the poet's name is the order that they performed in the first round, then their first round score. After that is the position that they performed in the second round, then their second round score, and finally their total score for the evening.

NB: These are only preliminary scores. The official scores and standings are kept by our slammaster, after they have checked and double checked all the math and adjusted any scores that may have incurred penalties.

Kelsey Savage (8 ) 26.9
Sean McGarragle (9) 26.4
Zaccheus Jackson (10) 29.5 + (5) 27.6 = 57.1 First!*

*edited score. I misread the score sheet initially. But there was a time penalty in the second round.

After many great performances in the last few months, Chris Tse broke through and won his first Vancouver Poetry Slam last night. Another Youth Slam poet kicks butt at the big show! Huzzah for the youth poets!

After the poet's name is the order that they performed in the first round, then their first round score. After that is the position that they performed in the second round, then their second round score, and finally their total score for the evening.

For the third time in the summer season, Zaccheus Jackson cleaned up and took top prize. This means at least two second place finishers will qualify for Vancouver's IWPS Slamoff... but who will it be?

After the poet's name is the order that they performed in the first round, then their first round score. After that is the position that they performed in the second round, then their second round score, and finally their total score for the evening.

point of clarification-wearing my rules hat here for a sec-10 poets are going to be in the 1st round of iwps playoffs-not 8.
having said that...
awesome job Chris at hosting-on par with the high standard set at the NPS level of mcing and bout managing.well done.
and to everyone else-poets,audience,judges and volunteers-thanks for making it a memorable evening.

Yes! thank you, Spelt. That was a copy and pasting error from last year's playoffs standings. I will correct the most recent standings update.
