The Vancouver Poetry Slam is very proud to present Airea "Dee" Matthews from Detroit.
Airea "Dee" Matthews is a nationally acclaimed performance poet and writer who placed on the National Detroit Poetry Slam Team in 2004. In 2008, she landed the title of Detroit Grand Slam Champion and Regional Rustbelt Individual Slam Co-Champion. Additionally, she was the invited opener for the Inaugural Women of the World Poetry Slam Finals held in Detroit. She has featured on National Public Radio (NPR) as well as the Bowery Poetry Club, The Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Detroit’s Max Fischer Theatre, The Fillmore Theatre and other select international venues including Toronto’s popular Drake Underground. She continues to move audiences with her deeply insightful and chilling persona and narrative-based poetry. Her work combines her abiding love for 17th century verse with a modern voice and keen eye on current events. Her style, by turns, has been described as aching and fierce.
She has been widely anthologized and published in e-zines and is the producer of the DVD performance collection, Venus Disrobed. Holding a B.A. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania and a M.P.A. from the University of Michigan, she is currently the Poet-in-Residence with the Y-Arts program, one of the largest artist incubators in Michigan, as well as a creative facilitator and executive board member of the Prison Creative Arts Project based in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan.
This is the third from last chance to qualify for the Vancouver Poetry Slam Semi finals and will be jammed so be early or be left outside.
Still only $5 and don't forget to get your tickets for the Salt Lines Show March 14th and/or The Van Slam Finals on April 20th featuring Shane Koyczan
