Van Slam Team Play-offs: Standings & Scores for 2008-09, 5 SLAMS LEFT!
« Reply #30 on: January 01, 2009, 09:37:43 PM »
After the poet's name is the order that they performed in the first round, then their first round score. After that is the position that they performed in the second round, then their second round score, and finally their total score for the evening.

29 December 2008

Chris Gilpin (1) 26 +(1) 27 = 53 Fourth!
Warren Fulton (2) 24.3
Julie Peters (3) 27 + (4) 26.2 = 53.2 Third!
Sean McGarragle (4) 24.5
Ms. Spelt (5) 23.5
Francis (6) 26.1 +(2)    26.2 = 52.3 Fifth!
Steve Miller (7) 26.6 + (3)    27.8 = 54.4 Second!
Fernando Raguero (8 ) 27 +    (5) 27.5 = 54.5 First!
Candyman (9) 24.7

Updated Standings for the 2008-09 Van Slam Poetry Team Play-offs

The top 16 poets qualify for semi-finals

First Place Finishers
Lisa Slater        59
Sasha Langford    58.3
RC Weslowski    57.7
Johnny McCrae    57.2
Scruffmouth    56.5
Dave Morris    56.4
Duncan Shields    56.1
Fernando Raguero 55.4

Second Place Finishers

Ed Word             58.0
Lucia Misch     57.5
Father Goose     57.1
Barbara Adler     56.9
David Perez        55.9
Sean McGarragle 55.4
Shannon Rayne     54.7
Steve Miller 54.4

Third Place Finishers
Omarie     56.1
Farrinda     56
Tim Slum     55.3
Julie Peters 55.2
The Svelte Ms. Spelt      54.5

Fourth Place Finishers
Relevant    55.6
C.R. Avery    55.4
Spillious    55.2
Babyface    54.5
Chris Gilpin 53
Paco the Charm  48

NB: so far Dave Morris, Barbara Adler, and David Perez have indicated that they will NOT participate in the Van Slam Team Playoffs, which means their names will probably be removed from these standings when determining the top 16. I've kept them in for now because, for one thing, they could change their minds, and for another, I like completeness.

There are FIVE regular season slams left to qualify poets for Van Slam team playoffs! They are: Jan 19, Feb 2, Feb 16, Mar 2, & Mar 16.

Just a head's up to poets who may be wondering what placing they need to qualify for the playoffs: a first place finish will certainly assure you a spot, a second place finish will probably get you a spot. Last year, a few third place finishers qualified for playoffs, however, I'd expect that with ten combined first and second place finishes still to come, it would be unlikely for any third place finishers to squeeze into the top 16 this year, and I suspect that even the lowest of the second place finishers could be in trouble.

That's just speculation on my part, so take it with a grain of salt. I could be wrong, but looking at the odds, I wouldn't assume a third place finish is a safe ticket to the playoff round.

IF (and this is all highly hypothetical, keep that in mind!) the Van Slam playoffs started today, and we removed the ranked poets who have already said they will not participate, then the top 16 would look like this:

1.) Lisa Slater
2.) Sasha Langford
3.) RC Weslowski
4.) Scruffmouth
5.) Duncan Shields
6.) Fernando Raguero
7.) Ed Word
8.) Lucia Misch
9.) Clint 'Father Goose' Wilson
10.) Sean McGarragle
11.) Shannon Rayne
12.) Steve Miller
13.) Omarie
14.) Farrinda
15.) Tim Slum
16.) Julie Peters
Best of luck to all the poets!

It looks like Fernando got a 54.5 in the last slam, but in the rankings he's listed as having a 55.4. Is that a typo?

Thanks for keeping track of this, Chris. Maybe we should make an announcement at the next slam reminding people that they can check out the standings on the website.

Feb 2- Van Slam Team Play-offs: Standings & Scores for 2008-09
« Reply #37 on: February 07, 2009, 12:31:41 PM »
Standings were largely unchanged after the last slam, as two poets who had already qualified tied for first. This tie triggered our first sudden death haiku-off of the year. It was a tense showdown between Duncan Shields and Lucia Misch, which Duncan narrowly won.

After the poet's name is the order that they performed in the first round, then their first round score. After that is their second round score, and finally their total score for the evening. Sorry, this week we don't have the position that poets performed in the second round.

Feb 2 2008

Shannon Rayne (1) 19.8
Ms. Spelt (2) 21.1
Magpie Ulysses (3) 25.1 +    26.9 = 52 Third!
Chris (4) 18
Spillious (5) 21.8
Shane Dale (6) 21.9
Jack B (7) 22.4
Mark Patterson (8 ) 22.3
Duncan Shields (9) 27.1 + 26.4 = 53.5 First (tie)!
Chris Gilpin (10) 26 + 25 = 51 Fourth!
Lucia Misch (11)   26.5 + 27 = 53.5 First (tie)!
Electric John (12) 23.1 + 22.6 = 45.7 Fifth!

Van Slam Team Play-offs: TWO SLAMS LEFT TO QUALIFY
« Reply #38 on: February 22, 2009, 09:24:51 PM »
Sorry for the delay in updating the standings. I've been moving lately. But not much has changed after last Monday, with Steve Miller moving up in the rankings and second being taken by an out-of-town poet.

After the poet's name is the order that they performed in the first round, then their first round score. After that is the position they performed in the second round (if they made the cut) and their second round score, followed by their total score for the evening.

16 Feb 2008

Spillious (1) 23.2
Chris Gilpin (2)    26.1    + (2) 26.6 = 52.7 Third!
Electric John (3)   19.3
Chris Tse (4) 25.8 + (5) 27.3 = 53.1 Second!
Djammi (5) 25
Julie Peters (6) 25
Ms. Spelt (7) 25.8 + (4) 26.6 = 52.4 Fourth!
Ed Word (8 ) 26.3 + (1) 23.2 = 49.5 Fifth!
Pilbury Poet Boy (9) 21.8
Wry Cooter (10)   16.9
Weez (11)   10.9
Steve Miller (12) 27.8 + (3) 28.3 = 56.1 First!

Yes, very soon. It shall be done. In the meantime, I can tell you that the winners of the last chance slam were Zaccheus Jackson, who took first handily, and Relevant with an impressive showing, took second. So they are both in the playoffs. That means the 16 poets in the playoffs are:

  • Lisa Slater
  • RC Weslowski
  • Johnny McCrae
  • Steve Miller
  • Scruffmouth
  • Duncan Shields
  • Fernando Raguero
  • Lucia Misch
  • Ed Word
  • Clint 'Father Goose' Wilson
  • Nora Smithhisler
  • Sean McGarragle
  • Shannon Rayne
  • Spillious
  • Zaccheus Jackson
  • Relevant

Of these sixteen, five of these poets will make up the next Vancouver Poetry Slam Team (4+the alternate). But who will it be? Tune in at the first semi-final on March 30th to find out!

Thanks, Chris.

And if the format for the semi finals has been decided yet can we get that posted too?  IE...1st round random...2nd round reverse order or highest to lowest or random and so on.  That might be helpful for preparation.

Merci.
