On August 30th, The Vancouver Poetry Slam is very happy to have Oakland's Kim Johnson feature at the Vancouver Poetry Slam.Kim Johnson believes that there is not a dandelion tamer on this earth who can quiet the gypsy in her. A lover of surrealist painters, metaphors, innovators, originals, dreamers, duende, creativity, strong women, sangria, playing her electric guitar on rooftops for an audience of cityscapes and stars, bonfir...es, traveling the world, Jimi Hendrix, people who are authentic, collages, writers, shadow boxers and risk takers. She has learned to embrace her weird and feels that it gives her a sense of creative freedom.She is not a big fan of cliches, fads, band wagons, arrogance, pigeon holes or perfection.Born in the San Francisco Bay Area and raised by her mother who claims that she began dictating poems to her at the age of four. She was encouraged to embrace her creativity and humanity from an early age. Surrounded by a close knit family of strong women who taught her the value of passion and to always remember to trust her gut.After six years on the slam poetry and spoken word circuit. Kim has been a member of several slam teams and toured the US many times over, performing at slam venues, clubs, colleges and festivals. In 2010 she finished in the top ten at the Individual World Poetry Slam competition and completed her first European poetry tour with performances in Germany, Spain, Austria and The Netherlands. She was the co-coach of the 2010 San Francisco Slam team ranked third in the nation. A poet mentor for both Youth Speaks San Francisco and Lyrical Minded. Kim teaches writing and performance workshops at high schools and title one neglected schools, group homes and mental health facilities throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.Kim believes that her best work is yet to come and is constantly exploring new sounds and aesthetics. She currently divides her time between the San Francisco Bay Area and the allure of a hundred other destinations.This is the final qualifier for the IWPS playoff on September 13th. This is also the last time we will be bring to you the slam beginning at 9PM.
