Yup.  You're right.  It's right there plain as day and I missed it.  Well, corrected now.  Thanks for helping me out.  Let me know if you notice any other discrepancies as they come up.

A new qualifying season is underway to determine which poet will have a chance to become the next Individual World Poetry Slam representative for Vancouver.  The IWPS slam off will be September 13th.  IWPS is scheduled to take place during October 13th to the 16th.

The point system is the same one we’ve been using since September 2009 but it’s completely different from previous years. It is a points system. You can read about how it all works here:
http://vancouverpoetryhouse.com/forum/smf/index.php/topic,1142.0.html

The point system should become clear very quickly.  With that in mind, here are the results from the first qualifying slam.

After the poet's name is the order that they performed in the first round, then their first round score. After that is the position they performed in the second round (if they made the cut) and their second round score, followed by their total score for the evening.

19th July 2010

Sac: Anna Lisa 23.3
Sean McGarragle (1)26.3 + (1)25.3 = 51.6 Fifth!
Johnny MacRae (2)25.9 + (5)27.2 = 53.1 Fourth! (1 point)
RC Weslowski (3)25.8 + (3)28.8 = 54.6 Second! (9 points)
Daniel Mark Patterson (4)23.9
WD Fulton (5)23.4
Carol M (6)22.7
Sarah Brocklehurst (7)20.9
Loh El (8)26.6 + (4)28.4 = 55 First! (16 points)
Shannon Rayne (9)24.0
Lisa B (10)27.9 + (2)26.7 = 54.6 Second! (9 points)
Steve Locke (11)24.2
Sam Dulmage (12)25.2

In fact, being from Victoria, I have always thought that Graeme seemed more like someone I should have met while living in Victoria rather than someone I met while living in Ottawa... for whatever that is worth...

Is there going to be a "last chance" slam for this?

Also, I've heard that Loh El is planning on coming out for the playoff from Ottawa.  However he is on the cusp of being knocked out of the top 10.  Has anyone been in contact with him to let him know of the situation?  If he is knocked out he might not want to fly all the way here to not perform.

As far as I know, he's been contacted.  Sean was talking about it the other night.  I remain positive that Loh El will be in.  If I'm not wrong, there's one more qualifying slam and then the wild card and then the playoff.  Even if someone new wins the next slam, it won't knock Loh El out.  I sure hope I'm not wrong about that but if anyone can provide me with terrifying, hair-raising, panic-inducing math that proves me wrong, lay it on me.

I was just thinking that Clint, Sasha and I all have 9 points.  Each with the possibility of getting more than 16 points which would push him down to 11th, I think.

The scenario will probably be clearer after the 30th of August.

Duncan is traveling right now, so, in the interest of figuring this out sooner rather than later, I'm going to take a look at which 10 poets may have qualified for the IWPS play-offs. This is completely unofficial. Official standings will be released by our slammasters. But let's give it a try here...

Last night, Johnny won (16 points), Sasha came second (9 points), Chelsea came third (4), Brett came fourth(1) and Ria came fifth.

I'll bold poets that I know want to compete and are already in the top 10, and add a question mark for those I'm not sure about. Making it all look something like this...

1. Zaccheus Jackson 32 points
2. Steve Miller 26 points
3. Chris Gilpin 25 points
4. Lisa B 25 points
5. Richard Lett 25 points
6. Duncan Shields 25 points CONFIRMED
Johnny Macrae 18 points ? (Not sure) UPDATED: Johnny withdraws because of a scheduling conflict.
7. Sasha Langford 18 points CONFIRMED
8. Lucia Misch 16 points (55.7) HELLA CONFIRMED
9. Loh El 16 points (55) (Just spoke with Loh El via fb. He will be in town and intends to compete.)
10. Tristan De Plume 16 points (53.6)
11. Ria Parks 14 points

Lucia, Loh El, and Tristan De Plume all have numbers beside their ranking because they're tied in points, and that's the score they received the night they won, which is used as the tiebreaker in these situations.

Cool.  Thanks for doing this.  I'll get the proper scores up once I get the scoresheet but that looks good.

I just want to confirm that everyone is aware that IWPS has been moved to Charlotte in early December.
