Vancouver Story Slam- Under New Management!
« on: March 18, 2010, 03:20:29 PM »
Hi spoken word community!

To all the friends I've made in this wonderfully eclectic group and to all the ones I hope to make in the future...

I want to inform you all that the Vancouver Story Slam, your number one source in providing endlessly entertaining live story telling (also the second longest running story slam in North America after New York City) has had a slight changing of the guard. Your long time host Ivan Penaluna has decided to step back from running the story slam, stating personal reasons, and I wanted to be the first to thank him whole heartedly for his years of service to the city and to the spoken word set. We sincerely hope he pops his head in from time to time to say hello.

This leaves the ever amiable human abacus, scorekeeper/timekeeper Rhonda J Milne and yours truly to keep this timeless institution up and running. And Rhonda and I have decided that our first order of business is PROMOTION, PROMOTION, PROMOTION!!!

So I have started this message thread to both keep you informed of upcoming slams (The Vancouver Story Slam is currently slotted at the Cafe Duex Soleils the second Sunday of every month) and to keep you up on the current standings. In coming weeks I will post more info so please stay tuned.

And please support this wonderful event. Tell all your friends to come out and enjoy the Vancouver Story Slam!!!!!

(in the voice of Kermit the frog) Yaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy!!!!!

Sincerley,

Clint "Father Goose" Wilson.

Best of luck Clint!

Ivan did a great job.  Story Slam was a wonderful place to hear eclectic styles of stories.  Ivan did a good job creating a open space for diverse styles.

Good on you Clint for taking over.

Thanks so much Shannon, and you are right about eclectic styles. Which is why I'd really like to see YOU come back into the fold. Your stuff usually had a different spin on it. And I know you haven't always scored high with the judges, but to hell with what they think. I don't just want to see stand up comedians (no offence to stand up comedians however) doing the slam, I want to see story tellers from all different walks of life. So please consider coming back down and participating, if not as a story teller then for sure as an audience member. (or a judge) But whatever you do, please tell two friends!

Thanks to all who attended the Vancouver Story Slam last night and made it such a memorable occasion. Our first ever feature entertainer, Rowan Lipkovits was spot on with his usual dry humour and fantastic accordian prowess. Plus we had an amazing line up of 10 story tellers plus one sacrifice teller. Also the crowd was one of the better ones we've seen in a while.

Just so ya know, here's how the top three wrapped up.

1) Sean Emeny
2) Bill McNamara
3) Bryant Ross.

Thanks again to all for your wonderful support of this classic event. And remember, next story slam is May 9th with the always hilarious Graham Clark!

Hey gang,

Here's your official reminder that this Sunday May 9th we are doing the Vancouver Story Slam some real justice by having as our guest, our most fantastic feature entertainer, the one and only Graham Clark!!!

This very funny comedian has a bio that makes him look like... well... like he should be performing somewhere other than Story Slam, but I have blackmail photos of him and a dominatrix midget in a seedy motel so he had no choice but to agree to come out and do our little show.

Also we will be signing up our regular band of story spinners as well as taking on any newcomers who happen by. I will start taking sign ups at 7:30 and we should get the show started shortly after 8:00 PM.

So be there or be disappointed!

Thanks all...

Clint "Father Goose" Wilson.

Yup today's the big day, so grab your mom and take her to the hottest event in town tonight. No I'm not talking about the Eagles concert, you can see them any old time. Thanks to all who attended our slightly unorthodox Story Slam last night. Graham Clark was one funny ass feature.....!!! Also congrats to all the story tellers who did their thing. And especially to our top three finalists.

1st place went yet again to Sean Emeny!

And we had a 2nd place tie between RC Weslowski and newcomer Mark Eugster.

And this just in, the next Vancouver Story Slam is June 13th with our very special guest feature, voted Vancouver's funniest comedian in the Georgia Straight's "Best Of" series.....Mr. Patrick Maliha...!!!

See you then.

Well I just have to say that all those story slam nay sayers who refuse to enlighten themselves on a Sunday eve, sure missed out on a ballistically fantasmic linguistically orgasmic story slam this past Sunday. We unveiled our new judging system and yes folks, you heard it here first, I think we have finally slain that aweful haranguing stuck to spoken word like shit on a shoelace SCORE CREEP! Hooray!

Also our feature, the ever amiable, always hilarious Patrick Maliha was wonderful as expected.

Next story slam is the 2nd Sunday of July. BE THERE!

Hey spoken word set...!

This Sunday, July 11th is the next Vancouver Story Slam. And our feature is the one and only, BILL McNAMARA!!!

Bill is the original Story Slam champ, taking home the big trophy in 2005. You owe it to yourself to come and see him do a full set. Much hilarity is guaranteed to ensue!

Also we will have our regular gang of story telling rabble rousers as per usual. Show up early if you want to slam as the list has been really filling up lately. Official sign up starts at 8:00 PM.

Sunday...Sunday...Sunday....!!!!

BE THERE......!!!

Congrats to Sean Emeny for once again taking the top spot in Sunday's story slam, and to Bryant Ross and newcomer Dave Elmhurst for tying for 2nd.

And a great big thanks to our fantastic feature, Bill NcNamara who did an excellent set.

Fun was had by all.

See you next month Story Slammers!

Hey Story Slammers and fans of this highly regarded event.

Just wanted to let you know that August 8th is the next Story Slam and although you might have not heard of our upcoming feature, you should definitely check him out.

I first saw John Rich perform at Thundering Word, and he blew the darn roof off the place!

It was really wierd, he walked in with a little napsack full of something mysterious and asked if we had power up on the stage, so of course I was curious all night, and then I saw what he had in his little bag, and more importantly what he did with it, and have loved the man's work ever since.

So come on down August 8th and tell a story, or just sit back and watch the show, but I guarantee you, you will be AMAZED by Mr. John Rich!

Hey gang, pullllease do not go down to Cafe Deux Soleils tonight expecting Story Slam. This month and this month only it has been moved to the fourth Sunday....which will be the 26th of this September.....after that we're right back to the second Sunday of every month.

Sorry for any confusion. The CDS moved us because some out of town band is playing tonight and it's their only possible slot. It was completely beyond my control.

I will put up a reminder in less than two weeks.

Thanks all!

Father Goose.

Okay so here it finally is....the September edition of the Vancouver Story Slam will be held THIS Sunday the 26th at Cafe Duex Soleils. Sorry for the confusion due to our regular spot being bumped, but next month we are all back to normal with the VSS continuing on the second Sunday of each and every month.

Also I posted on the Facebook invite that this would be the last chance to qualify for finals but that was a boo boo, that's actually next month in October. I know, just what we needed, more confusion.

Anyway, this Sunday our fabulous feature is the very funny Mr. Carter Hortie!

Please come sign up or just hang out and relax. See you Sunday!

Thanks......

Congrats to Corey Kennedy and Sean Emeny for their first place tie last night. And to Dave Elmhurst for coming in 3rd. You all qualify for finals night in November.

And a very special thanks to our last minute feature Byron Bertram who stepped in at the last second to cover for Carter Hortie who had car trouble. Byron was very hilary.

Next Story Slam is October 10th!
